From ZipsNation

"Tight game at half. The Miami offense adjusted to our QB pressure and started running and making quick throws. Seems to be good coaching..."

Is that the recipe?

Just did research to see Akron's last win over Ohio: 2007. That would be Tettleton's junior year of high school

To their credit, since then they hired coach Bowden.

I'm not going to do any trash talking or smack talk with my Zippo friends. There is a tide turning in the MAC with us dropping and Akron rising. If Bowden returns to the major ranks they will slip again but he seems like he's Frank-like in his ability to turn around the program. I am impressed with Akron.

Bowden has turned Akron around much faster than Frank but he's used a different model. I heard a radio interview with him last week in which he acknowledged that a talented four-year recruit just isn't going to choose Akron in most cases. He relies heavily on fifth-year players and transfers who have had issues at their previous schools. Amazing number of transfers on their roster, including a few from Ohio State. How that impacts their graduation rates, I don't know, but I suspect Bowden will have packed his bags before it catches up with him.

Also, on the injury front, we won't see QB Kyle Pohl, who suffered a partial tear of his MCL against Miami. The second stringer is much more mobile.

Hey, our third stringer looked really good with a rocket for an arm! :-)

Anyone know if Laseak will be suspended for the Akron game?

Others that should probably be on the injury list:
OL - Nic Gibbons - Didn't dress for BG, I don't know status
RB AJ OUellette - Probably will play, was less than 100% last game
DT - Brandon Purdum - Didn't dress for BG, don't know status

This kind of explains what I'm looking at when I look at their recruiting. His first class, 2012, had 19 Freshmen. In 2013 he had 17, then last year there were only 12, and for 2015 they show almost no one. If they have supplemented the team with an amazing number of transfers, that explains the limited number of Freshmen the last couple years. It's kind of a George Allen approach, applied to college, I guess.

I have to wonder if what you imply above is the case; is he doing a four-year plan to get out of town? It almost seems like those two big freshmen classes, who will be upperclassmen this year and next have been supplemented later with JUCOs and transfers, to make two mega-classes, which will mean two very good teams, but then, what comes after that? Can he keep getting enough transfers to keep up the success, or will the wheels fall off? Of course, if he's out of town, does he care?

Bowden is definitely looking to go elsewhere. He's not as old as Frank so Akron isn't a destination job. This is just my opinion, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him go elsewhere very soon.

Laseak was ejected late in the last game. So far as I know, that doesn't carry over, but I presume that's what Ted is asking.

Hello Bobcat faithful! I'm an Zip fan, but I often read your forum to keep up on the Bobcats. You guys have a very active fan base, so it's fun to read the banter of another MAC team.

I noticed there is a lot of chatter about the future of Bowden at Akron, as well as Bowden's recruiting strategies. There have been several intense conversations about this amongst Zips fans (especially over at ZN.O). Zips fans are divided on this, however there is a contingent of us Zips fans who believe Akron is Bowden's last stand. This sentiment is largely based on comments from Bowden and his family at football events and interviews, as well as comments from upcoming recruits. (I'm in the contingent that Bowden is here to stay...though it's probably just wishful thinking).

Recruiting is another story. Bowden came into a team that had very little talent and depth. The team immediately saw an influx of those 5th year/trouble at other institution players that made the 2012 Zips (though still 1-11) vastly more competitive. Many Zips fans are worried about recruiting, only having 13 recruits from last year. This number is some what misleading because Bowden has several guys doing the "grey shirt" route which had been recruited in previous years, but count against the 2014 numbers. Something Bowden he's acknowledged in several interviews. Most of these players have turned out to be quite good athletes and players. Though there have been low numbers, it seems those raw recruits are being refined.

Hope this helps a bit with the discussion! Look forward to the game!

Thanks for the explanation. It will be interesting to see how things happen. I don't have enough information to really hazard a guess as to how his strategy will work long term. Good luck to you.

Welcome to Bobcatattack; it's always good to have fans from other boards come to contribute.

Maybe I'm jaded, but I would never take a coaches comments to staying as gospel. I'll let one of the posters with a better memory elaborate, but we had a basketball coach in Groce who said a lot of wonderful things after our Sweet 16 run a few years ago, but then went to Illinois two weeks later.

Bowden's strategy is smart. Akron was too far down the hole when he first came in to think about out recruiting MAC schools. The 5th year guys and transfers boost his talent level to give his program some wins and time to build connections with the High School programs in the state. It helps that at the same time Kent's program is falling off the ledge. Now a vacuum in recruiting NE Ohio is opening up and traction can be made on traditional 4 year players.

Most Memorable Bobcat Events Attended
2010 97-83 win over Georgetown in NCAA 1st round
2012 45-13 victory over ULM in the Independence Bowl
2015 34-3 drubbing of Miami @ Peden front of 25,086

I am beating an abused horse, but this is clearly rebuilding/restructuring season for the Cats.

I believe that this will be a solid match up on Saturday.

I am predicting a close game where the overdue Zips pull it out in the fourth.

Final score 27 to 20.

According to Arkley, he must sit the first half against Akron. I knew that was the penalty for an unsportsmanlike conduct targeting penalty but wasn't sure about throwing a punch.

Theo and Boo--two JuCo's--Frank's doings. Why wasn't a QB brought in for 2014 and 15? Either one of those Bobcats would look mighty nice at the helm about 3 games ago. Couldn't find one worthy or straying from the JuCo route?

According to Solich, Purdum and Ingol should be practicing soon, and OUellette and Patterson should be closer to 100% this week. White was back, but his knee is acting up. Brown won't be back this week from his concussion. McQueen was in a car accident, and is sore, but otherwise OK.

Layton and Scipio both were back this week, and were very helpful. I personally thought both played well. It seems there were no new injuries versus BG.

I think it's always been a given that, like it was early in his career, Akron is just a waystop for Bowden on his way back to the bigs. Unlike Solich, I don't think Bowden's ever considered the state of Ohio to be home. There will likely be a few openings with snob conference schools at the end of this season, and if he gets Akron back to a bowl you can expect him to be a hot commodity.
