Still an awful called game. I really want to get to the bottom of our read option. Do the QB's really have the read or is it a designed run everytime?

+1 This is driving me crazy. I can't tell if we run it anymore. Based on the amount of times the QB keeps it I'm guessing no. So if we indeed aren't, Why not??

Only watched the Buckeyes/Nittany Lions in OT but that Buckeye QB knows how to run that play--amazing how long he keeps it in the running back's belly and sees the read and then pulls it out and gets a head of steam going.

Really that's the one thing that really bugs me about football recruiting. Coaches recruit based on athleticism instead of talent. My high school had a qb a year younger then me who ran the read option to perfection. The timing on it was perfect and it faked the defense out every time. He led our team to the state semis but didn't get recruited because he wasn't fast enough and wasn't big enough. I think that is silly. But back to the main point how are our QBs this bad at running it. The timing and faking is pathetic.

Half the time they aren't even doing a true fake on play-action passes. They are simply going through the motions and just putting the ball out there to make it seem like they might run it.

Sometimes misdirection is just one step. If you just need to create a moment of time or a step of separation a small fake may be all that is required or depending upon the defense all you have time for. But, I defer to those who might really know what they are taking about.

What's the point of misdirection though if you're not going to try to "misdirect" the other team?

Again, usually you are only trying to create a moment in time or perhaps one step of separation. If one step of misdirection will hold a LB a moment a play can go for the first down or create the second and short.
