On Saturday there were no tricks. OHIO wasn't playing fast and loose with the playbook. If you were watching, you saw OHIO football execute the very offensive game plan Frank Solich and Tim Albin have been consistently preaching for years.

We saw the option read. We saw the repeated runs right up the gut.. And though the pass game was working well, we even saw the run on 3rd and long.

There were big question marks on the O-Line. The staff was working with an unproven core of freshman RBs to spell a junior who was unproven as an every down back. None of this mattered. The foundation of Saturday's game plan was poured before these players were even in high school.

Derrius Vick was superb. He was the dual-threat quarterback OHIO's game plan has been missing. His 35 yards on the ground may not seem significant to a disinterested party, but it was sorely missed by OHIO. Because Vick's 35 yards surpassed the rushing totals of last year's quarterback in all games but one (37 yards against UMass, with a 31 yard run).

With a QB capable of linking the rushing game to the passing game, you truly saw the OHIO offense firing on all cylinders. And for that I would like to give a nod to consistency.

Not only were they consistent, they were unflappable. A turnover? So? Go get the job done. Another? Back to work. A third one? So, start over. Four, and now the score is tied? So? There is time left, let's go. There was never panic. There was never a change to the plan.

How about going for it on 4th down twice? That's a sign that the coaching staff trusts the defense to get the job done, and after allowing just one TD off the four fumbles, you gotta believe that trust is justified.

+1  EXCELLENT analysis.  I couldn't agree more.  Go OHIO!

and with all these new players on the field in our first game we had a total of 1 penalty for 5 yards. And it was a suspect penalty too, off sides on a kickoff. The funny thing is the first kick was a touch back which would put the ball at the 25 but because of the penalty the rekick was returned but only out to the 20. In other words, Ohio's one penalty went for +5 yards. Not a bad start.

What I was most pleased with, beyond the victory of course, is that this team seems to have great attitude and effort.

While I love winning games, going to bowls, and am still holding out faith and hope that we will one day claim a MAC championship again, I care more that we have young men playing for us that give 110% on the field, in the classroom, and in how they strive to positively represent our university.  This year's team seems to reflect all of those thus far.

Like it or not Kent State has had our number for the past few years so while a win against them may not mean much on the national level I believe it was a major mental hurdle crossed for our players.  I do not think you could write a better script for a game that provided our team with the adversity and opportunities to create division amongst the ranks. The fact that they rallied around each other and picked one another up when they could have imploded tells me they are sold out to what Frank and the other coaches have been tirelessly building into them.

Attitude and discipline seems to be woven around the talent that we have which I think gives us a shot in every game we will play this year.  I'm excited for the season and am hopeful that we will be a player in the MAC East race going into November for the first time in a few years.

Speaking of consistency, how nice is it to have a kicker like Yaz? I watched the recap on OhioBobcats.com, and looking at the length of the winning kick, that thing would have been good from 60 yards. Ohio was spoiled with Matt Weller for a while and now spoiled with Yaz. Appreciate the leg!

perimeter and GoCats both hit on things that I was pleased with. The lack of penalties was impressive, particularly given that it is week one and a lot of young guys got on the field. A lot of games this weekend, as with most week ones, were filled with laundry.

As far as Yaz, I kept noticing teams in close games going on fourth down from inside the thirty this weekend, I saw BYU's kicker miss from 33 yards in person and was watching CMU as their kicker missed from 23, 43, and an extra point. Auburn missed from 42, Navy from 36, Okie State from 42. Other than the first couple games of last season, I've been so spoiled for years with Weller and now Yaz that lining up from 44 with the game on the line barely even stressed me. 45 in seems automatic, and even out past 50 I feel good about the odds... which is really impressive.

Yes, I'm spoiled, too. I have to admit that it never really occurred to me that he wouldn't hit it. Only after the game did i think about the fact that the difference in the game came down to field goals. If you omit the entire rest of the game, it came down to:
Ohio gets to try a FG from 44
Kent gets to try one from 20

Ohio makes theirs, Kent misses. Ohio wins.

I still value consistency, despite OHIO's slumping offense the past two weeks.

2 maybe even 3 games might be called a slump. If this continues through a 4th game I think we can say it is consistent.
