On Saturday there were no tricks. OHIO wasn't playing fast and loose with the playbook. If you were watching, you saw OHIO football execute the very offensive game plan Frank Solich and Tim Albin have been consistently preaching for years.
We saw the option read. We saw the repeated runs right up the gut.. And though the pass game was working well, we even saw the run on 3rd and long.
There were big question marks on the O-Line. The staff was working with an unproven core of freshman RBs to spell a junior who was unproven as an every down back. None of this mattered. The foundation of Saturday's game plan was poured before these players were even in high school.
Derrius Vick was superb. He was the dual-threat quarterback OHIO's game plan has been missing. His 35 yards on the ground may not seem significant to a disinterested party, but it was sorely missed by OHIO. Because Vick's 35 yards surpassed the rushing totals of last year's quarterback in all games but one (37 yards against UMass, with a 31 yard run).
With a QB capable of linking the rushing game to the passing game, you truly saw the OHIO offense firing on all cylinders. And for that I would like to give a nod to consistency.
