On defense it's has to be Johnson. Seemed to be everywhere on the field racking up 11 tackles and had some big hits.

I spoke with someone who was at the game.  Derrius Vick walked up and down the sidelines, firing up the Bobcats for the final minutes, getting the team ready to win.

Derrius Vick.

O line.  Didn't allow a sack or even pressure on Vick all night.  He had plenty of time to find open receivers.  Great run blocking as well.

Yes, I noticed that too on the ESPN feed. They stayed on the sidelines for about 15 seconds during a commercial break and the camera picked up Vick yelling at his teammates (in a good way).

My vote would be for the O-line. Strong showing on run plays and pass protection. Zero false start or holding penalties.

Edit: Just read Pataskala's post. Yeah, what he said.

How about props for the new Assistant Coaches? QB play and OL play were both very good.

I will never again in my lifetime see a true freshman walk on to the OHIO football team at running back and play in the first game. I say this without even qualifying the fact that AJ was a workhorse that got the team into field goal position on the game-winning drive. Unprecedented.

Call me a sentimental romantic - but AJ's story represents Ohio so well. Here is a player from a tiny high school who went largely unnoticed by D1 recruiters. He comes to Ohio as a(preferred) walk-on - earns himself a scholarship- gets the call in his first game to "save the day" and comes through like a blue chip. Talk about the embodiment of what it means to be a Bobcat. This guy is officially my favorite cat. I'm rooting for him.

That being said - from what I've seen I am totally on-board with this team. It's going to be a joy cheering for them- win or lose. I am officially enthused! Go Bobcats!

They won me over this summer, with their infectious positive attitude and team spirit in interview after interview, and I think it was after the Navy Seals video that I broke out the Green Koolaid. Oh Yeah!

For those that don't frequent the recruiting forum, and who just heard about AJ Ouellete for the first time in recent days, here's the article from May 6th about him that was posted over there.

And his recruiting video is amazing. I love the runs he makes during the "scrimmage in the corn field".

Did he find the field last season?  He appeared to have lots of quicks and closed fast to the play with sure tackling.

Great story - thanks for sharing! This kid is going to be fun to watch! Besides, if he had gone to Eastern he would have had to tear down a brick wall before entering the field. How'd that work out for them? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sw6q9Zh97Tk>

Someone on this site was talking earlier about this group of seniors and although only a few remain with the program they were good leaders and maybe they could leave a mark on this season in that way.

After one game I would like to upgrade that to GREAT leaders.

This is a game that last year, with the amount of adversity OU faced, we would have lost by double digits.

It was really impressed watching the sidelines ... no bad attitudes ... no dropped heads ... no finger pointing ... no helmet tossing ... lots of communication (both player-to-player and player-to-coaches) ... EVERY PERSON on the sideline was completely involved with the game. What an improvement in just one off-season.

I'm not predicting an undefeated season, but I can be proud fan of this TEAM ... and hopefully the groundwork is in place so that in the near future when the talent and experience merge the result will be something special.

I agree that AJ Ouellete is a real asset to this team.  As another poster said, his story is a real Romantic one, in the classical sense of the word.  I think we should from here on out spell his last name as OUellete.  We could even agree to purposely mispronounce it to stress the "OU" part.  Sort of "OU-letta"!  It would be kind of a nickname.  What you guys and gals think?

Yes, I said that, and I agree, the difference in leadership between this team and last year is night and day. This is going to be a fun team to support, win or lose...and I expect they will win more than most people expect.

I got to mention Brendan Cope. Lots of poise for a RS Freshman on his first live action and as a starter. Mentored Brunis during time outs when Brunis was in the game.
Cope is a freaky athlete  big, very fast and agile. Plus a great teammate. Proud of our Y-town guys , Landon Smith and Cope. And very proud of this team!
See y'all in Lexington.

I leaped from my couch and almost hit the roof when Devin defended the 3rd down pass in the red zone that led to Kent's missed field goal.

I think that this is well put.  I've had very similar thoughts.  Watching this team you really saw the old relentless attitude that had been missing the last few years -- ever since, at least, the The Brain Fart in Oxford.  But, in addition, this team seems to have more talent than some of the earlier relentless teams.  The number of quality RBs and WRs and CBs and linemen of all varieties (OL and DL) seems almost unprecedented in my long-in-the-tooth Bobcat memory.  I don't want to make too much out of just one game, but there's something about this team that reminds me (in terms of attitude and talent) of the first OHIO team that I followed very closely (attended every home game and listened to every road game).  That was the legendary 1960 "small college" National Championship team.  OK, I know that I'm going off the deep end here, but I'm just recording my actual feelings in a stream-of-consciousness fashion to my BA friends as detached from reality as they may turn out to be.  I hope they are not, though!

Maybe it's just me, but as I watched the Kent game one of my reoccurring thoughts was that this team looks a lot like the the '06 team. They were/are playing for each other with a relentless and will not be denied attitude.
