The negative is obvious and that was the 4 fumbles.

The positive are many.  I am thrilled with Vick, the receivers the defense,  kicking game, play calling, running backs (minus fumbles).  I am confident the fumbling issue will get resolved.

I am thrilled with the outcome and am now fairly optimistic that Ohio is in more of a reload and not a rebuild.

Can't wait to watch the Kentucky game next week!  Go Ohio!

Honestly, I'm pretty thrilled. Vick looked superb! The WRs were making things happen, as well. Very pleased with the offense. Instead of trying to force too much or be too conservative (like last year), they found a nice balance of playing within themselves and that worked.

A win is a win in what is expected to be a down year.  Better to be 1-0 than 0-1.  And 1-0 in conference play.

The fumbling was frustrating, but hopefully a statistical anomaly. D looked solid....hopefully it's not because Kent has no offense. No major injuries, always a plus. Landon Smith is going to be a force if he can stay healthy. It will gel.

But seriously, the fumbles. STOP IT. NO MORE. Daz isn't an inside runner. Edmond can't hang onto the ball. D Brown....I'll give him a pass for now because I think he's got some serious potential. Oullette was moving the pile on his runs, give him some more PT.

Given our past history, the mere fact of winning AT KENT says it all to me!  4 fumbles or not , ugly or not, this win is absolutely huge!  Other than Akron (and really, how good is Howard?) the rest of the MAC laid an egg this weekend.  Big, big win by the Bobcats!  No such thing as an ugly win on life on the road in the MAC.

They would have dug a big hole if they lost this first game. However, overall they played very well on the road and should give Kentucky a great game. They have a lot of weapons on offense and a aggressive defense. The coaches and players say there is a much better attitude on this team over past Solich teams, especially last year, and they all were excited about the season and felt they were going to turn some heads. Tonights game, minus the fumbles, proved that as they never gave up. They moved the ball almost at will and should have won at least 28-7. Just call them the Heart Attack Cats!

Agreed and this wasn't an ugly win. Arguably, the RBs where the only unit that played poorly.

I'm with that.  During the game I was frustrated that our great D-line didn't get a lot of sacks or constant pressure and that kents' qb completed 95% of his passes.  And those fumbles...

But I think how excited OUr lads were at the clinching field goal and how a young group didn't quit for a moment and overcame four fumbles.

Not bad.  Not bad at all.

Let's "play four quarters" next week at Kentucky!

Credit to Reardon there... I thought the DL was doing a pretty good job getting pressure on him. Obviously they didn't rack up many sacks, but they were a factor in stopping the run and applying a good amount of pressure.

Crutcher, King Kendric, and Bashman played well.

aside from the RBs you could pick on the easy short routes given up, but that's ticky tack in the grand scheme of things.

Anybody listen to Frank postgame? He have anything insightful beyond the obvious?

And did Papi White get hurt? I missed that during the game but saw his tweet.

If fumbling was a problem for just one guy I wouldn't be concerned, but four fumbles by three different players seems to be a coaching thing.  Technique needs to be addressed pronto; UTM fumbled three times and lost them all vs UK today.  Good to see Ouellette cover up as soon as he got the ball.

Overall, it was a very good effort.  The D held Kent to just 31 yds on the ground and got two sacks plus pressured Reardon several other times.  The O line didn't allow a sack and I don't remember Vick getting any pressure.  Cochran was double-teamed all night so it was good to see the other WRs -- especially Landon and Cope -- step up.  Yaz probably could've hit from 60.

We'll be in first place in the MAC East at least until October 4.  Great feeling.

Though if it'd gone to OT, it coulda been tense, I never had the sense that the 'Cats were going to lose this one.

Which is quite a good sign given the youth of this team, our history with kents, four fumbles, and the mediocrity of too much of our last 18-20 games.

GO OHIO!!!

I think we are going to be stronger than people think this year.  We can win at Kentucky next week but only if the RB problems are ironed out.

I had that same feeling, too.  Penn St came out fired up after all their adversity in the off-season.  EMU came out fired up after Reed's death.  Kent seemed emotionally wasted.  If they had scored on their opening drive it might've been a different game.  But our D was in control all night, so I felt pretty confident despite the fumbles.

Posted elsewhere, but thought this fit better here.
First enjoyable, though nail biting, trip to Kent in several years. Ouellette gave us a real spark in the last drive. Frankie obviously wanted to run the ball down the field and count on Yazdani's leg. And he made it with 10 yards to spare into the wind, though it had died down from the 1st half. He had the benefit of a "practice' kick on Kent's 2nd time out and he made that one too. D-line was dominant. They all deserve game balls. Vick managed the game well, threw well when needed and broke off a couple of nice runs. Only big downsides were the fumbles (but maybe 5'7" 177 lb. Dez up the middle all night might not be the best strategy. Kinda reminded me of the old days in Cleveland with "Metcalf up the middle.") and some coverage problems by the d-backs especially Bass it seemed. No complains though. They overcame everything and came away with a W and we left happy. And oh yeah, the 110 was the . . . 110. 'Nuff said.

Much better start for a season.

Last season this DL had something like 36 sacks, but, could not stop the run. Last season Kent 312 yards rushing, yesterday 31. Sacks are exciting, containing the rush wins games.

Vs Kent last year Ohio ran for 69 yards, yesterday 179.

Regarding the fumbles. If the depth chart becomes Ouelette and Irons, so be it. Defenses will be ripping at the ball like crazy after yesterday.  Does anyone think coach Solich will attend the film study session with the RBs?

The final score should have been 28 - 7.
Since we are young and since we have had such recent troubles playing Kent I'll take the W.
The next game will be different than the game before, so it's difficult to really make any predictions for next week from this weeks game.
Vick appeared to me as a 2-3 year starter not a 1st year, 1st game starter. Those running plays that were called for him showed the opposition we do have a dual threat QB.
It was very important for this team to get this W in so many ways.

I agree. The offensive line quietly went about doing it's job. No sacks is huge, and while the runs weren't huge, there were steady 3-4 yards gains.

I would say that Solich definitely does not like fumbles, and there will be some extra ball control drills this week. I think this problem will get rectified. If the other teams are going to start grabbing for the ball, I say "good". I hope they forget to do sound tackles because they are so busy ripping at the ball.

- Johnson and Brown are fantastic. Our front 7 is a MLB away from being the best we've seen in a long time.

- Devin Jones should always be on the field. The guy has size and athleticism, something that we've been seriously lacking at safety.

- Ian Wells is our best corner.

- I'd like to see Dorian Brown as our every down back and Daz as our 3'rd down and RB/WR hybrid guy.

- I guess Papi White tore/strained his MCL. That sucks!

- Vick is an UPGRADE at QB. Who knew?? I called the QB competition a "ruse" to keep Vick motivated and people were all over me for it. Lets face it, Vick was always going to be the starter. The guy is a baller.

- The O-line looked better than expected

- Landon Smith is a great possession receiver

Bottom line: The younger guys playing now look better (and hungrier) than the guys they are replacing! I'm relieved and excited for the season. :)

Good thoughts.

...

No sacks, but Kent State did return their two starting tackles and I think they were pretty good preventing sacks last year also. Additionally, Reardon got rid of the ball pretty quickly. He is a very solid QB.

Beyond just Basham, I am loving the depth we have at DE. I thought Smith looked the best of all of our DE's yesterday. Sayles, Laseak and Basham all played a good amount of snaps and were strong against the run

I wonder if we might try Basham as an OLB on 3rd downs in addition to a combination of Laseak, Sayles and Smith at DE.

We did have a sack early on if I remember. Basham was in on it.
