OHIO is still listed as the underdog, +2.5.

I love that the target is off this team's back. And I fully expect this team to over-achieve.

This is still a Frank Solich coached team. I think the expert's have mis-diagnosed the state of OHIO football.

The last game Kent played was in Athens, and they beat the living piss out of us 44-13.  For that reason alone I am struggling to get on board with the optimism for this weekend.

Quick reminder of our last 2 trips to Kent-

11/23/12 Ohio 6, Kent St. 28
- TT threw a pick 6 with nine minutes into Q1 and KSU was up 21-0. Ohio scored 2 FGs, both in 1st half. Kent's defense outscore Ohio's offense 7-6.

11/26/10 Ohio 6, Kent. 28
- Same score, same result. Kent's coach was coaching his last game after another 4 win season, for Ohio it was simple- win and you go to Detroit, lose you stay home and watch Fiami win a MACC. Ohio's offense totalled 183yds and failed to score a TD again. Ohio had 4 turnovers. Kent's defense outscore Ohio's offense 7-6.

In the most prolific 5 year stretch of our program's history we've gone 1-4 against the Flashes. We really need to get this monkey off our back.

I have a bad feeling for this game.  Throw in the fact that Kent State will be even more motivated to win the game for Jason Bitsko, I think Kent State wins this game.

Okay.  Yet not a single one..no one...not any of the doubters, even...has taken my Bobcat Challenge:  my $50 against yours plus you kick in an extra dollar for each point we score if we win?!

Not exactly a vibrant fan base here.

At the risk of sounding like an excuse:

We played Kent on a Tuesday night the week after losing 49-0 to BG (another Tuesday night game). The team had mailed it in well before the Kent game kicked off.

My theory is our starting QB was much more of a drain on our resources last season than some acknowledge. I expect the team to far surpass their production on both sides of the ball this year against Kent.

I would add we lost to Kent State in 2012 on the road, on a frigid Friday following Thanksgiving, with an 11 AM (!!) kickoff. We lost to Kent in 2010 under the same scenario (a cold Friday following Thanksgiving on the road with an 11 AM kickoff).

We haven't exactly been playing Kent State under standard conditions recently.

Now that we get Kent on a Saturday night in August, I fully expect victory.

I'm a vibrant fan, but I still have zero interest in putting $50 on this game, regardless of who might get that money.

As we consider the running backs for this game, we know what to expect from a couple of them. Edmond is a big, strong, tough runner, and he should be worth a steady 4 yards a carry, and will be tough to bring down. Patterson, as we all know, if fast and shifty, but he appears to be stronger this year, so I'm expecting good things from him. We also know about Irons, who looks like a solid back, and White, who is extraordinarily fast, plus Ouellette, who may be the next Blankenship.

What do we know about Dorian Brown? Most of us, I think, know very little, so let's take another look at him. Buried down on page 9 of the recruiting forum, here is his recruiting thread. Here is his recruiting video. In watching that film of his, consider the words of our own Bobcat2006:
Bobcat2006 wrote:
I coached against this kid the last 2 years.  The one thing you cannot tell from his film is that his team overall is terrible.  He never had a good O-Line to block for him and all of his yards are from his effort.  He was his entire team the last 2 years.  With this in mind every team in our conference knew this and would key on him and he was still able to put up great numbers.  I really wonder how many more yards he would have had if he had even a decent O-Line at Baldwin.  I really hope he turns out to be a good fit for Ohio!

Indeed, a lot of his runs start out as sweeps one way that are not well blocked, but the defenders overrun the play, and he is able to cut back to the other side of the field and makes big yardage.

McCrae and Wilson each scored 49 TDs. That is a bunch folks. If Ohio has another Kalvin or Kareem I hope they give him the ball. Most likely I am talking Brown or Irons.

I think the Penn State game showed that that emotional drive can only last so long...and if you keep it close early you can win the game.  The Bitsko thing will hurt Kent as much as help.

It's not just that either. Every time Kent wins it feels like its a blow out. Even those games that like 20-6 or 23-6 or whatever feel like we were put through a clinic. The DC at Kent has OWNED Tim Albin lately.

Another good example of that happening was the EMU game last year, where a well liked player was found shot to death the day before the game, and the team dedicated the game to him. Midway through the third quarter it was 21-21, and EMU had the ball 1st and goal at the Ohio 7. After an interception stopped the drive, the wheels fell off for EMU.

I added a quote to as a signature that reflects why I'm drinking the green koolaid this year. This team's attitude reminds me of the 2006 team. The 2006 team had relatively low expectations, but the players wanted to believe, and wanted to do well. The coaches didn't need to sell them on the idea - they sold themselves. Then they set out in the off-season to do the hard work to accomplish those goals. When things got tough, they never gave up. That was what made them such an easy team to root for. That was also why they won the close games that year. They were 6-0 in games decided by less than 10 points.

I see that same attitude in this group of players. They want to do well. They don't want to fold in November, as happened the last couple year. Unlike the last few years, they aren't going in expecting to do well, or expected to do well. They knew they would have to work hard, and play as a team to achieve their goals, so they worked hard in the off-season. They asked the coaches to push them harder, and to give them more contact, not less. You can tell they are hungry. You also get the feeling that they trust each other, and will play together as a team, and not give up.

I can see that this team believes. I believe they will play relentlessly. I believe this team has every bit as much fight in them as their head coach does. Therefore, I believe it will be an easy team to root for, and that good things will happen to them. Even if not, they will still be a team that is easy to root for.

Who hasn't?

I agree with Situation on the QB last year. I firmly believe a QB willing to RUN in the option read will be a HUGE benefit to our entire team. That said, there is a doubt in my head telling me that somehow our play calling from the sideline somehow wanted Beau up the middle every play and will continue to want that (or its equivalent) this year.

If the read option is executed as designed, there is no reason we should not see an improved offense. Defensively, I expect that we attack opposing quarterbacks. When that happens, I think the mistakes (turnovers) will start piling up for the opposing team. This is an exciting defense to dream about. All the pieces are there.

I'm not sure how much say he has in the playing calling, but we do have a new co-offensive coordinator this year.

I agree that Tettleton was probably more of a negative than a plus those last games, but as to the weather conditions and the day of the week, both teams had the same situation.

Don't care what the score is.  Just want an Ohio win.

Don't care who Ohio's QB is.  Just want the offense to move the ball and score multiple TDs.

Don't care who Ohio's D line and LBs are.  Just want them to stop the run.

Go Bobcats!!!!

A handful of plays on which our qb runs or has the option to run (with a choice of pitching to a running back) would be good.

But more than that is the willingness of our qb to use his legs to scamper--which could mean a run or finding space from which to pass it.  The games in the '10 for 10' series show how TT used his legs at his best--to avoid sacks or to evade the rush in order to get off a pass.  It worked.

I'd like to see our QB find a way to force their offense to punt more than 3 times. And when we do force them to punt I'd like to see our QB make sure that some fat kid doesn't take a direct snap and run for a 60yd TD. If he could do those thing I would appreciate it.

Kent punted twice in the first half against us last year. Kent did not punt in the second half. Look at the OHIO drive summary table below. Our QB's inability to keep OUr offense on the field hung OUr defense out to dry.

The team's did play under the same conditions. But can we agree that the conditions were extreme? And can we agree that all players do not respond to extreme conditions equally? Can we also give extra merit that the extreme conditions were experienced on the road?

See LeBron James' NBA Finals cramp for details.

This game is HUGE. Its the first step in a much improved season. I hate to say it but now that TT is gone hopefully the bad mojo is too. We should go 2-1 to open the year and possibly 3-0. Two rivalry games and basketball school. If this program is going to continue moving forward we have to take two of the first three.
