Seems to be about 8 Fr. on the Two-deep with one starting at Nose. Young team.

Couple things I see going our way.  (1) Kent's O line -- seems to be inexperienced (3 Sophs & a Jr) and not as big as those that gave us problems last year.  Only two 300+ pounders.  We had problems with teams that had four or five 300+ on the line last year.  (2) Their D line is undersized,  The Frosh Cunningham is 295 but the rest aren't above 270.  Sort of looks like a D line you might've seen 40 years ago.  Our lines should match up well against them.

Also, with a Soph QB with redshirt Frosh at backup, if we can get a decent pass rush we can really intimidate them.

I see no Durham at running back? Are they sandbagging or not playing him? At a Season Ticket holder appreciation day I recently attended Durham was still hurt and Haynes sounded dejected about it. Also, the line looks small but I am focused on Terhune. Let's get a nice smack on him for getting us to look foolish last year!!!

1. While Kent has 8 Freshmen on the two-deep, Ohio will probably have 9-10 freshmen on the two-deep, including one starting at RG, and perhaps another at WR.
2. While Kent has a Sr, a Jr, and 3 Sophs starting (13 total years), Ohio will probably have 3 Juniors, a Sophomore, and a Freshman (11 total years), so Ohio's line is younger.
3. Kent's O-line has two 300lbers, and is 292-290-294-320-302 (1498 total). Ohio has only one 300lber, and is lighter overall 287-313-296-285-293 (1474 total).
4. Ohio's QB's are a year older than Kent's, but neither have played a lot.

I do like Ohio's chances in the game, but it's not because of numbers, it's because I like the attitude of the team.

Cunningham was listed at 265 in Feb as a recruit. He was a Greco Roman Wrestling State Champion. I just hope he is not another Roosevelt Nix.

Durham had surgery on his ankle.  Looking like he will miss multiple early games.

Durham is still hurt, I believe. My fantasy football draft guide currently describes his status as "very questionable for Saturday's opener versus Ohio, and it isn't clear when he will play." That is current through this morning.

I count a total of 27 Freshmen that might play for Ohio. I'm sure not all of these will get in the game, but here are the ones that I see as possibilities.

True Freshmen (10) - Lowery, Pruehs, McCray, Con. Brown, White, Irons, Ouellette, Walker, Brunis, Brunson
Redshirt Freshmen (17) - Adams, Murdock, Morgan, D. Brown, Cope, Ced. Brown, Wyatt, J. Brown, Alexander, Quallen, Grillot, Polling, Moore, Daugherty, Smart, Aloese, Porter

According to the Flash Facts, starting LG Jim Katusha began his career at Ohio in 2011. He wasn't a scholarship player, so must've been a walk-on. I think he was on the Spring roster that year. Transferred to Butte College where he played in 2012 and then redshirted last season.

You must not have been alive 40 years ago. I just looked at the OU freshman football roster from 1970 and the biggest kid was 235 and the second biggest was 224. These would have been seniors in 1974 or 40 years ago. 270 was NFL not MAC 40 years ago. By the way, the biggest kid on the same Ohio State program was 250 and All Pro Randy Gradishar was 210 lb linebacker.

The average defensive tackle in the NFL in 1974 was 254 so figure the MAC at maybe 230-235 and that is according to the NFL site. No one realizes how much bigger players are today, truly no comparison. I believe our starting center in the tangerine Bowl was Carson Crow and he was 200lbs maybe if that.

Quick reminder of our last 2 trips to Kent-

11/23/12 Ohio 6, Kent St. 28
- TT threw a pick 6 with nine minutes into Q1 and KSU was up 21-0. Ohio scored 2 FGs, both in 1st half. Kent's defense outscore Ohio's offense 7-6.

11/26/10 Ohio 6, Kent. 28
- Same score, same result. Kent's coach was coaching his last game after another 4 win season, for Ohio it was simple- win and you go to Detroit, lose you stay home and watch Fiami win a MACC. Ohio's offense totalled 183yds and failed to score a TD again. Ohio had 4 turnovers. Kent's defense outscore Ohio's offense 7-6.

In the most prolific 5 year stretch of our program's history we've gone 1-4 against the Flashes. We really need to get this monkey off our back.

Ted, please where did you fnd the Game Notes? Never mind. Found them.  All. They are under the 2013 Beef Game Note Link. I thought they would just create a game note link for 2014.

I put them in the first post of this thread.

I'm not sure this is linked anywhere but you can also find them here: http://www.ohiobobcats.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/082813aab.html

Game notes are out, and Ted has posted the actual depth chart. I see that there are 11 Freshmen on the 2-deep, plus another at KR.

The true freshmen that look slated to play from the start are White at Kick Returner, Brunis at WR, and Pruehs as RG. Also on the 2-deep are Langenkamp LG, McCray RG. I wouldn't be surprised to see some others on the field at some point, though.

A kick return team of Daz and Papi should provide a little excitement.

In other comments, I note that they still have not added Mangen to the pronunciation guide. As I recall, some announcers had trouble with his name last year.

The WRs

Pos. N o. N ame Of Note...
F-WR 87 Landon Smith (Sr., 6-0, 188, Girard, Ohio) Has played in 26 career games
89 Aaron Bradley (GS., 6-1, 200, Cerritos, Calif.) Has logged over 1,200 career receiving yards
X-WR 85 Brendan Cope (R-Fr., 6-2, 189, Warren, Ohio) Redshirted in 2013
19 Herman Brunis (Fr., 6-0, 170, Fairfield, Ohio) Part of the 2014 Signing Class
Z-WR 8 Chase Cochran (Sr., 6-2, 190, Lebanon, Ohio) Had a single-season career high 689 receiving yards
12 Jordan Reid (R-So., 6-3, 201, Stone Mountain, Ga.) Appeared in eight games as a redshirt freshman

Brand new, never having caught a pass in a game for Ohio; Bradley, Cope, Brunis. I really like coach Dixon.

Carpenter actually did well last year.  He was a good runner yet also a blocker when not fielding the kick.

I know sometimes the depth chart listed in the game notes doesn't really mean much as far as who really plays, but some interesting things. Cochran, Cope and Smith listed as the starting receivers and true freshman Herman Brunis is one of the backups. True freshman Jake Pruehs listed as a possible starter at RG. True freshman linemen Stephen Langenkamp and Jared McCray are backups.

Looking at the depth chart regarding our freshman offensive lineman, would that suggest something like this??

Pruehs: Definitely will play
Langenkamp: May play, doubtful redshirt
Mccray: May play, doubtful redshirt
Lowery: Likely redshirt?
Dudziak: Likely redshirt?

I've heard some raving reviews of all of these guys including the ones I listed as likely redshirt. I prefer we redshirt freshman offensive lineman for development purposes but this group is good. Going to be hard to not play them.

I agree that the only one that appears sure to play is Pruehs. Beyond him, I think they will try to redshirt the rest, if they can. A big key is the health situation with Everhart, and whether his appendix ruptured or not. I had my appendix out a couple years ago, but I caught it early, and was only in the hospital a few hours, and back at work the next day. I also know people that had their appendix rupture, and they were in serious shape for weeks. Thus, I'd guess that if Everhart's appendix didn't rupture, he may be back in a week or two, in which case they would try to avoid playing guys like Langencamp and McCray, but if Everhart's appendix did rupture, he may miss a month or more, in which case they may have to play at least one other true freshman.

I hope that Papi's redshirt won't be burned to be a kick returner. I feel that he could be something great and if he's going to be in the backfield this year as well, great.

If Papi burns his shirt for KR you know he will see some backfield or WR action..

Guys like he and Walker and Irons are just too explosive to sit on the bench.

The same thing goes for true freshman Pruehs.....sure Gibbon may not start because of injury...but I'm not sure he can beat out Pruehs anyway.

This is this the best recruiting class I've seen at Ohio.....which is good because they will be needed.

Brunis will turn some heads.

As we consider the running backs for this game, we know what to expect from a couple of them. Edmond is a big, strong, tough runner, and he should be worth a steady 4 yards a carry, and will be tough to bring down. Patterson, as we all know, if fast and shifty, but he appears to be stronger this year, so I'm expecting good things from him. We also know about Irons, who looks like a solid back, and White, who is extraordinarily fast, plus Ouellette, who may be the next Blankenship.

What do we know about Dorian Brown? Most of us, I think, know very little, so let's take another look at him. Buried down on page 9 of the recruiting forum, here is his recruiting thread. Here is his recruiting video. In watching that film of his, consider the words of our own Bobcat2006:
Bobcat2006 wrote:
I coached against this kid the last 2 years.  The one thing you cannot tell from his film is that his team overall is terrible.  He never had a good O-Line to block for him and all of his yards are from his effort.  He was his entire team the last 2 years.  With this in mind every team in our conference knew this and would key on him and he was still able to put up great numbers.  I really wonder how many more yards he would have had if he had even a decent O-Line at Baldwin.  I really hope he turns out to be a good fit for Ohio!

Indeed, a lot of his runs start out as sweeps one way that are not well blocked, but the defenders overrun the play, and he is able to cut back to the other side of the field and makes big yardage.
