Bills cut Alan Branch today after arrest for DUI.  Good news for Landon.

Phil Bates caught a touchdown last night. Carrie had 5 tackles and a huge punt return.

Watching a video clip, I realized that the corner Bates burned is the guy Carrie is battling with for the Raiders starting nickel spot. One Bobcat helping another.

Donte had two catches for 27 yds for the Vikes vs Tenn last night.  With Jerome Simpson sitting the first three games because of his DUI arrest, Donte might at least get a spot on the practice squad to start the season.

Posey also had a tackle and a PD in that game last night.

Jordan Thompson caught the only ball thrown his way in the Lions-Bills game last night for nine yds.

Landon had three tackles, two for a loss, in that game for the Bills.

One fun aspect of this preseason has been the number of games where at least one Bobcat was on each team.

Bates caught a 33 yard TD pass. http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-game-highlights/0ap30000003...

Julian Posey had an interception as well. http://vikefans.com/index.php?/topic/16652-notebook-vikin.../

Rosters must be cut to 53 by Saturday at 3pm. Good luck to all the Bobcats in the NFL.

Bills just cut Landon Cohen.

Decent shot they bring him back tomorrow in a re-sign kind of deal.  If not, have to believe another team will sign him.

That's a huge surprise.  They must be hoping he'll clear waivers so they can sign him to the practice squad.

There is no waiver system like MLB, when you are cut you are cut. As for the practice squad, Landon is in eligible for the practice squad due to his service time. Disappointed he was cut, and kind of a head scratcher how he can not find a fit with all the teams he's been with. Thought he was playing some of his best football this fall.

Vikes cut Posey and Foster. Hopefully they get a shot at practice squad or with another team.

Carrie on the Raiders 53 man roster. No surprise, he'll probably get time returning punts, on kick coverage, and as a slot corner.

Very good! That's the best they could reasonably hope for, at this point. Hopefully they can follow in Bates' footsteps, and work up from the practice squad to the roster in the future.

Wow, makes the 53 man roster then waived. This truly is a business.

Bizarre, but having made the 53 man squad, maybe someone will pick him up.

Probably be tough unless someone gets hurt, as all the 53's are set, and he'd have to learn a new system.  Given the amount of time he was active last season, he very well may be ineligible for a practice squad as well.  One must ask, where does his fight with the best player on the team come into play?

Practice Squad Eligibility

In order to be eligible for the practice squad, a player must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Have no prior accrued seasons of NFL experience. An "accrued season" is one in which they spent six or more games on the active roster.
  • Have one prior accrued season of NFL experience in which the player was on the 45-man active roster (i.e. not inactive on game day) for no more than eight games.
  • Thanks to the new rules this year, a team may sign a maximum of two practice squad players who have earned no more than two accrued seasons of free agency credit.
  • If a player has served two seasons on the practice squad, they are eligible for a third season only if their team has 53 players on their active/inactive list for the duration of that player's employment.
  • A player has served one season on the practice squad if they are on the practice squad for at least six games (up from three the past few years).
I think Bates would likely still be eligible under these stipulations, but I could be wrong.

A bit of conjecture about what happened from Seattle Times columnist Bob Condotta (I've seen similar elsewhere):

Here’s my notebook leading off with the return of Bryan Walters and the waiving of Phil Bates. As for why this happened in the way it did — Walters brought back two days after being released with Bates released two days after having made the team — one possibility is that the team was exploring trade options for Bates. Maybe there was a team that had expressed specific interest in Bates. Maybe, too, was the thought that it might be easier to get Bates through waivers and back on the practice squad now, when rosters are largely filled, than a few days. It may be worth a daily reminder that the practice squad makeup could change pretty much daily this time of year.

BTW, Taylor Price is still listed on the Seahawks' roster on IR.
