This obsession over this just screams little brother syndrome  and does more to make the university look small time than anything OSU is doing.

Whenever I hear an actor or director tell an anecdote about working with Robert De Niro they often refer to him as "Bobby". I'm guessing that's what Mr. De Niro's friends call him and that's what he answers to. However, whenever his name is listed in the credits of a film, or whenever the media (local, national, print, online, tv, or whatever) refers to the actor for any reason, they always refer to him as Robert De Niro. Always. That's his brand name, that's what he insists on being called.

We are OHIO. That is our brand name. It is what we should always be referred to by any form of media. OU is our nickname. Its what people who know us call us in friendly conversation. Both have their place, but don't assume they are always interchangeable, they are not.

I'm going to have to say that there is an important distinction that makes your examples a bit different than this situation. In the case of Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, and Minnesota, none of those schools have another school trying to usurp their name. With no one challenging their right to be called "Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, and Minnesota respectively, they don't have to be particularly careful how they are referred to, and so UW, UI, UM, etc are not a problem. In the case of Ohio, they do have a problem in that regard, and therefore they need to be ever vigilant to continue to protect their rights to the name.

I believe there are 3 state universities whose state name is followed by 'university'-  Indiana, West Virginia, and Ohio. Indiana is called Indiana, never Indiana U. Diddo for West Virginia. Ohio is Ohio!  That's what the sports scoreboard world has learned to call us and it has caught on with lots of folks. We should never concede that name to Ohio State. Ohio U. is cheap, unnecessary. And OU may mean Ohio in the state and in parts of contiguous states, but it will always be Oklahoma for the rest of the country.

Go OHIO.

WVU can't be confused with something else the way OU can. If you're comparing WVU to Ohio U the equivalent would be West Virginia U.

I think that this is a very good way to put it.  I like the way you think.  Well, at least in this case!

I prefer to look at this from the other angle: How many schools with the word "state" at the end of their name ever shorten it to just the first part? In other words has anyone ever heard Michigan State just referred to as Michigan? Ditto for Florida State, NC State etc.

What I said was West Virginia is never called West Virginia U. just like Indiana is never called Indiana U. Sure they're sometimes called WVU as we're often called OU, that won't change. But we should never be called Ohio U. either, IMO.

And the comment by Roger above that Mich. St. is never called Michigan, Fla. State never called Florida , etc. is a point well taken.

I use that logic often when folks in Indiana ask where my son played...."ohio state?"   Umm do you call the place in Terra Haute Indiana ? DO you call the place in Lansing Michigan? DO you call the place in Manhattan Kansas? Hell no...OHIO is OHIO...there can be only one.

Somewhere I have an old poster from the 2000 "Battle of 'Ohio'" (as the Dispatch called it) that says: "In all the world there's only one OHIO."

Maybe we should just start referring to OSU as State then.

OHIO adding U to their brand is as unnecessary as Ohio State adding THE. At least it doesn't sound as pretentious.

Sorry to come in late on this, but just last night I saw another decal on the back of a car with cartoon people spelling "O-H-I-O" with their arms - only this one also had the letters (and hyphens) under the people in a large red font.   Thinking of the issue a different way, I wonder if Ohio couldn't get OSU's trademark rescinded.  If not, maybe I'll apply for a trademark on the image of people using their arms to look as though they're spelling "O-H-I-O S-T-A-T-E" (the "E" might be a little tough).

The few times I've run across the word "OHIO" in the colors of State, whether on a bumper sticker, sweatshirt, or whatever, I  just say, "Go Bobcats" and let them think about it.

I do the same thing when I see someone with that set=-up and add a fist bump or high five. They always give me the bump/five and then look confused. I just keep rolling.
