BGSU looks like the team to beat..just saw the offensive plays from their spring game..they are averaging 2.5 snaps per 60 seconds and the coach claims they will be faster come fall...their wr's 6'4 Gallon..6'3 Dieter (Notre Dame transfer) and 6'3 Roger Lewis are flying up and down the field like a track meet. Hopefully this also means their secondary is trash lol.

Gallon is out with a torn ACL, and Dieter is actually an SMU transfer, not Notre Dame, but he is from the state of Indiana. I think BG is the team to beat based on the fact they are defending MAC Champions and return a solid core. But I think that new offense is going to cause themselves just as many fits as it does some of their opponents until they get it down themselves.

There was a nice little window where Brandon was incompetently running BG and Amstutz was bumbling out his time at Toledo where the conference's power structure could've been altered. Central and Ohio rose up but didn't maintain. I fear BG and UT along with, of course, the steady and stable NIU have re-emerged for another long run of good football.

The time to get that MAC title might've passed Ohio and Solich by.

Tend to agree, if we WERE ahead for a while, I think a bunch of Conferences foes have now caught up!

Question is: can we pull ahead again?

I just don't get why BG has historically been such a strong program.  Non-descript campus, little student support, average facilities.  I never understood why anyone would want to go there…other than Myles Pizza.  OK, I just changed my mind completely.

It's all relative to what the student-athlete wants or is looking for, not what we think they should like or do. Having a campus built of bricks, lines with brick sidewalks and covered in trees doesn't equate to football wins. Ask Miami how that's working out for them right now too. One could just as easy argue why would you go to Ohio to play football over other MAC schools. OU doesn't historically have a strong program, the student support often falls off after the 110 performs and we don't win championships. Heck, it wasn't until a few years ago that we even won our first bowl game and 70 teams get to go to a bowl nowadays each season. Other MAC schools had won bowl games years ago when the MAC sent one team per season, not 5, 6 or 7 like we do now. We just finally got a fieldhouse and a school like BG has had one for 20 years. Take schools like Toledo or NIU. Many would agree they aren't exactly nice looking campuses but they have pretty good football programs.

There is only one school in the MAC I would ask why would you go there to play football and that is EMU. Pathetic performances, zero fan support from students, alums or locals, bland campus and not much of a history at all. But EMU is one coach away and a good season or two under their belts from getting that thing turned around to make playing football there appealing to an 18 year old kid who could care less about what the program looked like before he was born or how well it did when he was 5 years old.

As for Ohio, I do not think anything has passed us by and we haven't missed our chance. We have been in the thick of the MAC race for several years, we just haven't broken through. Will this be our year? Maybe not, but any year could as we're at least contending each season and not out of it two weeks into the conference race like it used to be every year not too long ago.

Ohio Bobcat, gotta agree with you too.  We love OHIO but there are thousands of students who go to other MAC and Ohio universities.  Relating this to Saul Ball, I love what the guy says but within 200 or 300 miles of OHIO there is Oswho, UC, the MAC, and many other choices for students or athletes.  I do agree few of those places seem to have alumns who appreciate their institution any more than us!!

My theory regarding BG is that most of the MAC ends up recruiting either NE Ohio, or SW  and central Ohio. Meanwhile BG and Toledo end up with NW Ohio more to themselves, plus recruiting Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois, and I think those areas are less heavily recruited.

I see this as one of the most wide open seasons for MAC football in some time.  Probably the only teams that can't win this season are UMass, Fiami and EMU.  Everyone else has a shot.  BG is the frontrunner in the East but with a new coach nothing's for certain.  Ohio, Buffalo and Kent are all retooling and Akron showed considerable improvement toward the end of last season.  In the West, NIU will find it tough to replace Lynch, and the same with BSU and Wenning.  Toledo may have the best team coming back, but I don't think WMU and CMU can be counted out.  Should be an interesting year.

OK, I get what you are saying about the teams that will not compete (and based on last year's Miami debacle), but I think that the Redhawks may surprise this year.  As much as it hurts to say it, they have a QB (ND transfer Hendrix) that will step right in and help the offense.  And it does hurt to say that !

I bet that BG does a lot of negative recruiting against other MAC schools effectively. You can recruit against Ohio by saying it hasn't won a championship in 45 years. Miami is not on the highway and is a program of the past. Kent and Akron are basketball schools. Toledo is in a dangerous area. EMU has no fans. Players from Detroit and Chicago only a few hours away with most other MAC schools further. There are a lot of kids that play football dumb enough to buy into it.

I think the BG mystique has something to do with the colors, adopted by Paul Brown for Ohio's two NFL teams.  The story I heard years ago was that Brown took his Browns to BG in the early days for fall camp, liked the colors and adopted them.  Whatever, the colors are the same and these players can imagine themselves playing for the Browns or the Bengals when they don the BG uniform.  Yes, kids that age are impressionable.

Toledo is strange in that if you stay on campus, you're remarkably safe. But go one or two streets over and you aren't. Then go three or four streets further over and you're in Ottawa Hills, the fifth richest school district in the state of Ohio. Weird nexus UT is at.

That is very true about Toledo. Turn one way off campus and it's beautiful, turn the other way and you're ready to make a u-turn. I much prefer the college towns of the MAC in Ohio such as Athens, Oxford, Bowling Green and Kent over the cities in Toledo and Akron.
