Per his Twitter, he is going the grad transfer route and leaving Findlay to come to Ohio. Not clear if this is a scholarship or walk-on (assuming walk-on), but getting a guy from one of the best D2 programs in the country isn't a bad thing.

Averaged 13.9 points and 5.5 assists last season. Has a career assist/TO ratio of 3.1.

I would think at the very least, his 3pt shooting should carry over... He's quite the nifty passer as well but, along with his dribble drives, not sure that will be available to him in D1. In his defense, he had some respectable numbers against BG and Toledo a couple years back so, who knows.

Welcome aboard Tommy, and GO BOBCATS!!!

The stat that jumps out at me is the number of steals. It seems in recent years the number of steals is not up to the level of the DJ years.

Perhaps Tommy and team can pick a few pockets. it not only stops a scoring threat a steal can get the team running the break for more in the paint points and thrilling slams!

I'd wager a saw buck that he is on scholarship and not a walk-on. With these stats he is a solid MAC back-up on any MAC team.

Due to the timing of this, I wonder if it's in response to coach Boals being alerted that Jason Preston will remain in the draft.

I hope my senses are off on this one, Leon. As an Ohio U. guy, obviously I would want Preston to return for his senior season--especially since we have a team that looks like it really can do some damage on the national scene. But as someone who was involved in many drafts from both the college and NBA sides as a sports writer, past history dictates he should come back and look to improve his drafting position from second round to top 20 in the first round, even looking to get into the lottery-team spots.

Now there have been kids who stayed in school too long. One I remember vividly is point guard Mark Price, who would have been a top 5 pick if he had left Georgia Tech following his junior season in 1984-85. Price stayed, the team didn't do as well as expected, and he dropped to the second round, selected by Dallas at pick No. 25, then traded to the Cavs while the draft continued. Price went on to have an all-star NBA career. So it worked out. But he lost a lot of dollars up front by his choice to return to school.

I see Jason as being in the opposite situation as he has nothing to lose and all to gain by returning to Athens. In his situation, Preston potentially could cost himself a long-term GUARANTEED contract right out of the gate if he comes out too soon. Ponder this: I wonder where Ja Morant would have gotten drafted if he had come out of Murray State after averaging 13 points, 6 assists and 6 rebounds his junior season? What a difference a year made!

While Tommy is much smaller, JT Shumate did have a great impact for Toledo going from d2 to d1.

I also thought about the parallels to Shumate, but I don't think the size differential between the two makes a difference since they play different positions.

Could he be like Spencer Littleson for us? Tough, small but aggressive with range from distance.

Maybe, but Littleson was more of a wing....6-3.

I gotcha there. With JP gone, if Boals adds no one new we have Miles or Schmock as backup PG. Need Schmock to be more than just a walk on.

QFT. I trust Boals and his staff so we'll see, but I'd personally feel a lot better if it was:

Schmock replacing Tenerowicz as a walk-in.
Insert transfer replacing JP as backup/combo guard to Sears.
Insert big time freshman or transfer as a long athletic 3 and D wing (STILL our biggest deficiency).

We have literally nobody on our roster with length who can both defend the wings and knock down 3s. We have guys who can do one or the other. Nobody that can do both.

I don't know enough about Schmock to be confident that he can give us 8-10 minutes a night or be one rolled Sears ankle from 20-25 minutes a night.

We have up to 2 open schollies. Need to use them IMO.

I trust in Boals and the fact that Sam Towns is still around tells me he is developing and Boals can make him that lengthy defender and shooter.

This is a good addition. Having some depth and experience at PG is a must.

I've seen crazier things happen.

Considering how quickly our new recruits and transfer threads were “pinned” after committing, I suspect it’s more than likely that Mr. Schmock will not count against our current scholly tally… Regardless, since Dwight and JC don’t count against the 13 scholly requirement, even if Schmock is included, we would still have room to add players as needed…

That was fast! Hey, at the very least, I know one person is reading my comments… As I said before, we still have room for more…
I think my next comment will be that the former Dayton player we were recruiting won’t be signing with us…

I believe the ability to go over the scholarship limit was to retain your own players. I think players who use the 6th year but transfer schools still count. If I’m right, only Wilson wouldn’t count, Carter would.

Thanks Eagle for the info. Actually, BobcatAttack’s recruiting matrix says neither of them (Wilson or Carter) will count against the 13 so, I guess we will have to wait for official word to know for sure…

Tommy is on a scholarship.
