As some of us know, next week starts my favorite time of the year at the Roundhouse on Richland.....Tournament Ball.

Figured this would make a great thread to talk about my favorite time along with prospects that blow through over the next few weeks that garner a nickname from Sweet Lou or are D-1 Caliber.

Not a guy who's going to be playing in the Convo this tournament season, but a kid to keep your eye on: Carver Meyers from nearby Morgan High School. The MVL is tough to keep track of due to their inconsistent publishing of statistics, but I believe he had 18 points and 17 boards in a loss last week. The team is young, so maybe in 1-2 years they'll make a run to Richland. He's a 6'5" sophomore and I believe he's averaging somewhere around 20/10. Again, small school and he plays every position on the court, but he can shoot and the Cats could use that right about now..

I go back to 1977 when Portsmouth made their run through the district and regional tournaments on their way to the AA state championship. Lisath, Tubbs, etc.

Morgan is historically in an unfavorable position with the school location combined with enrollment. It's almost like Logan where consolidation made the school weaker than it would have playing as 2-3 schools in the county.

But good to know about a kid like this. Does he play more like a guard or a post? 6-5 kids at that level tend to be posts but can move like a guard or vice-versa.

1977 was Ironton coming out of the Convocation Center. Portsmouth with Lisath and Tubbs was 1978.

Morgan would be best served leaving the Muskingum Valley League, but that actually might be worse for them as far as recruitment goes. He plays as a combo guard, his brother is a senior with a little larger frame. His brother is the starting center at 6'5 230-240 I believe.

And what league do you suggest Morgan goes into? Better yet, what league will travel regularly to Morgan?

The TVC. Morgan is much closer to Washington and Hocking counties. Especially with the expansion of the MVL. The thoughts of driving from Morgan to River View is atrocious.

From the most northern TVC school it takes an hour to get to Morgan on very bad roads. For most TVC schools that drive would be 1:30 to 2:00, that is never going to happen.

Basketballl 30 at the Convo was how I came to know what Ohio University even was. My high school (Malvern) played in the Regionals twice (1996 and 2000) down in Athens and I'll never forget being amazed at how big the Convo was and the sounds of the players running up and down the court. It seemed like such a grand stage since there is no seating in the lower bowls (not sure if they still do that).

That's no different than the MVL. Competition wise, Morgan would be a better fit for the TVC.

The farthest trip in the MVL is the shortest trip for Morgan in the TVC. No one in the TVC is even going to entertain your idea. Did you ever think of a job at the OHSAA? Because you seem to have all the answers for balance and competition. Why don't you help Logan find a league???? I hear they will pay for the help.

Not sure who all you think is in the MVL, but in your list only Tri Valley and Sheridan are currently in the MVL from your list. In 2020-2021 morgan will go into the small school division of the new MVL. Coshocton, Meadowbrook, New Lex, West Muskingum, Crooksville and Morgan. Only Meadowbrook and Coshocton are decent trips and Meadowbrook is not that far.

Good for you, you apply to the TVC. And let know how that works out! Keep saying what you’d like to happen and I’ll keep telling you what is going to happen. Morgan is not even a SE District Team. Competing in another district than the one you are represented in is a bad thing for your kids or tournament.

End of the day, Morgan is not joining the TVC, and I’ll put serious bank on that!

Current distances for Morgan:

Philo 21 miles
Crooksville 23 miles
Tri-Valley 45 miles
West M - 35 miles
Maysville - 32 miles
Sheridan - 39 miles
New Lex - 26 miles

TVC for Morgan:
River Valley - 75 miles (horrible roads out of Morgan and into RV)
Wellston - 70 miles
Vinton County 63 miles
Athens 36 miles, no straight roads
Meigs 58 miles
Alex 47 miles
Nelsonville York 34 miles.

Morgan to the TVC will happen right after the Big 12 invites the Bobcats into their league with our new 35,000 seat stadium.

Morgan currently plays only Athens periodically in basketball, but plays none of the other schools. Fed Hock which you promoted in an earlier thread couldn't even play a full football schedule last year, and has won about 4 basketball games in 3 years. Waterford is a small D4 school while Morgan is a DII, so why you'd want these two to play is far beyond me.

Let's settle this real quick:

Morgan to the TVC Competition wise: Makes a boatload of sense for Morgan to drop down and play with Athens, Alexander, Meigs, etc.

Morgan to the TVC Geographically: Doesn't make sense. When your school is located where it is, it's terrible to get into McConnelsville and by bus.....only clean way into it is through the north.

I think we can all readily agree that this situation does not make sense for Morgan or Logan as to what leagues to join. Would take a massive realignment of SE Ohio competition and travel wise for anything to ever appear to make sense.

And will say this, had a school up our way pull out of a league because their enrollment got smaller against their peers (some towns grew combined with theirs shrinking a bit). They at least acknowledged that they needed to get out and get among schools of similar size. Maybe someday Morgan can make a move, but I don't see it happening based on where they geographically.

Tri Valley, River View, Sheridan, Meadowbrook, Cambridge vs Waterford, Belpre, Meigs, Trimble and Fed Hock?

Not sure who all you think is in the MVL, but in your list only Tri Valley and Sheridan are currently in the MVL from your list. In 2020-2021 morgan will go into the small school division of the new MVL. Coshocton, Meadowbrook, New Lex, West Muskingum, Crooksville and Morgan. Only Meadowbrook and Coshocton are decent trips and Meadowbrook is not that far.

I coach in the MVL... I’ll leave it at that. But keep on man

Monroe would be proud of the shape this thread is taking!

Again, you can draw up all the leagues in your head you want. At the end of the day, Morgan is NOT going to the TVC. OCF has a better chance at getting door to door shuttle service from the athletic department to games than Morgan has of getting in the TVC.

That’s just a fact.

You're correct.

Why wouldn't Vincent Warren be a good candidate for the MVL, especially if they are expanding?

Travel distance. Warren does play Morgan in most sports, but that’s about the only MVL team to do so. Warren messed up leaving the TVC, they will never get back in as long as the TVC has its current structure.

I think Warren benefitted from being in the SEOAL. Their enrollment was more than the other TVC members. That included a drastic drop in enrollment at Belpre, which was their biggest rival while in the TVC. Warren went from playing the Federal Hockings of the world to playing schools of similar enrollment, like Jackson, and bigger schools like Parkersburg.
Marietta is now their biggest rival and they never even played them in their TVC days. While they havent done well in football, I think the move out of the TVC has helped them in all other sports. I doubt they would have made the Div II final four in Columbus as a TVC member. I have read they were offered membership by the ECOL but turned it down. I'm not sure I see where MVL travel would be any worse for them than SEOAL travel was for them.

And look how growing to a large league with great travel distances worked out for the oldest non-city league in Ohio.
