I'll say it...Saul knows what he is doing. Some here might be a tad overly critical.

Also, i'll swallow my hat if Jaaron doesnt return for senior season.

Pretty funny how Bobcat fans think 6'7" is a "big". Gamecocks had a 6'9" and 6' 10" starter a 7'0" on the bench and another 7'0" freshman coming in. Florida had 2 7'0" starters and look at Gonzaga and some of the others. Gamecocks had PJDozier at guard and he's 6'6" and going NBA after two years. My point is what worked in 2011-12 probably never works again without the type of guards we had that year and we aren't close. We can't even win the MAC so without a couple of 6'9"-6'10" centers we aren't going dancing or we are one and done at best.

I read the term "rising" differently than most of you. I thought the writer used it as someone who is between classes. As in a rising junior would have completed his sophomore season but not started his junior season.

That term showed up about 6 -8 years ago in recruiting circles and started gaining traction to the point where now we say rising instead of soph or frosh to be...in Europe they use U15 U16 or similar because they go by age whereas in America guys like Bill Walker and OJ Mayo got held back to compete against guys younger than themselves for purposes of recruiting....OJ , though a year older (nov 5 87) competed in the HS class of 07 was older than 06 players Greg Oden Jan 22 1988 and Kevin Durant Sept 1988 Chase Budinger may 22 1988 and most of the Rivals Top 150. At 29-30 years old not much diffetence but from age 12-19 each year of maturity is a quantum leap.

"rising" in american recruiting applies to classes whereas before the phenomenon of holding kids back and trying to define where a kid is in the recruiting process it was an adjective as in "rising" star or "rising" talent.

I don't think "Bobcat fans" think 6'7 is a "big" as much as they have realized that getting a 7 footer in the Mids is either a project, a stiff or a huge, lucky stroke of good fortune. Guys like Zeke or similar for a mid major is the anomaly rather than the norm.

Kind of condescending statement toward Bobcat fans who are astutely assessing the reality. That is an Undersized 4/5 that will have to play out of position since 6 10 and 7 footers do not grow on trees and are snatched up by P5 schools whether they are coming out of HS or spend 2 years at a Juco. You don't think USC has a distinct advantage in stockpiling bigs? Butler, Nova and many schools are in similar boats from what I see... You can make the same "pretty funny how.." statement about several schools that are tourney teams.

http://www.msuspartans.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/msu-m-bask...
https://www.vcuramnation.com/roster /

I may be reading the quoted wrong but I think Gamecocks are not quite as tall this year as stated ranking 127th on average height at 77.1 according to KenPom while Ohio was "only" 93rd at 77.4....

My take is that, IMHO, the "bobcat fans" realize that those guys do not grow on trees and the ones that are laying on the ground under the tree are half rotten or have worms. It is all about style you play and what you are trying to do. Jay Wright (V'Nova) is probably missing the boat....he should have won the NCAA with 7 footers or our 20th tallest 2016 Ohio squad Christian recruited instead of the 63rd tallest 6 2 /6 5 /6 5/6 7/ 6 7/6 9 squad of "bigs" he had that year.... which actually looks a lot like what we got......next year. Just my take on the height issue.

Will be interesting to see who gets the task of guarding Western Kentucky's incoming 7-foot frosh Mitchell Robinson (McDonald's All American) when they come to town.

We aren't as tall as two of the tallest teams in the country, oh no.

Here are some starters from NCAA tournament teams this past year:
Villanova started a 6'6 PF
SMU's starting big men were 6'7, and 6'8
Virginia started a 6'5 PF
Iowa State started a 6'5 PF
Butler's starting big men were 6'7 and 6'8
Notre Dame's starting big men were 6'5 and 6'8
Marquette started a 6'6 PF
Vanderbilt started a 6'6 PF
Northwestern's starting big men were 6'6 and 6'8
Dayton's starting big men were 6'6 and 6'8
Michigan State's starting big men were 6'7 and 6'8
Miami's starting big men were 6'7 and 6'8
VCU's starting big men were both 6'7
Virginia Tech's starting big men were 6'6 and 6'7

If Mickle can fill a defend and rebound role, he's a nice add.

Is he here just 1 year?

It's a win for the young man, he expected to go D2 and get playing time and Saul saved him. It is a one year rental. If we get Tone back, it doesn't look that bad. If we lose Tone and Jaaron then the move stinks.
Mickle, who still is green offensively (despite being a Senior)," and is "apparently going to take a step down from Division I in search or more playing time.

You seem to be forgetting that if JaAron leaves, it opens another scholarship that could possibly be filled this Spring.

yes. Other choices would have unbalanced the classes. 2 years, coming out of Juco would have left with Block and Co. Got the opportunity to get a 4 year and balance the classes.

Great, much needed GLUE pickup for next season. Sounds like he'll fit right into the culture we've built under Saul, provide some tough minutes in a reserve role, and boost practices. Last year was weird with so many injuries and players unavailable to practice (Wadly, Khari, Tone, and Gollon - four scholarship players).

What a day at the Convo.....Wow!

Unless I missed it, I don't see anywhere where he expected to go to D2. At least no one was quoted as saying that. Seems a little speculative in the article in the Naples paper to me.

I think the point he is making is that the step down comment was made by the journalist not the coach.

Coach Dooley wrote:

Essentially, he wants a lot more playing time," Dooley said. "He's going to graduate and try to find a place where he can get some more playing time. As a senior, I clearly understand that.

The coach said he's looking for more playing time and the journalist spun it as such. Maybe the journalist knows more than we do, not sure.

And what was the basis for the speculation in the article? Just because a random reporter in Naples says something in an article doesn't make it the gospel. I find it hard to believe that Mickle was planning to go D2 a couple days before committing here, only to have us swoop in at the last second with no prior warning to offer him a scholarship.

You don't like the signing, based on nothing more than a fifteen second review of a stat sheet, so you are harping on one random quote from one random article. No one here has any actual knowledge of what other options, if any, Mickle had.

What about him being a) tough b) physical c) athletic and d) defensive-minded makes him so bad to the point we "should do better"?

Is it simply because he doesn't score enough for you? Is that the real answer? If he averaged more ppg you'd love him?

In other words - are you unashamedly putting this signing down based on a volume and pace dictated counting stat which anyone familiar with efficiency or analytics will tell you is almost worthless (not to mention completely ignores the non-counting/harder to quantify defensive side of the ball)?

It's like the guy who hates your teams catcher who has such a good arm that nobody even tries to steal on him - and who has an OBP over 330 but "only" has a batting average of 200 - so he obviously sucks.

Your analogy would be great if you had video proving that he is Ben Wallace on D. Stat's don't lie, let's hope it was just the system. We are losing Tone and tis is the best that we can do. You guys are trying to force me to drink the koolaid, i just can't do it. I do wish him and the team well. I hope he suprises me. I took a class at Ohio, I think it was Sociology 211, it was the stugy of crowds. I know you and others are questioning this signing, but the thought of being in the BA doghouse is very horrid so you are following the crowd.

Oh okay - so he either needs to be the best defender in the league or average 20 ppg. I stand corrected. Got it.

Weird that I don't even think this kid will be a starter for us, on a team I have little faith will be more than a 500 MAC squad, yet I'm able to see how he fills a need (balancing classes/defense/rim protecting/rebounding/fouls/bench role) and find myself in the position of having to defend the move.

There were over 140 grad transfers available and we made our move. We balanced our classes, I will play like I believe the narrative, because you even see it.

He is not being asked to replace Campbell he is being asked to replace what we expected from Taylor last year. A grad transfer good enough to replace Campbell would not be coming to Ohio.

Bingo. Let's get a P5 grad transfer, that will start, to magically come to Ohio. The trend for that to happen is becoming less and less likely every year. My perception is, that sort of player generally is going to stay in the money conferences.
