So I continue to pound the drums loudly that we've GOT to get a big who can step in and play right away with a skill set that includes low-post scoring, rebounding and rim protection. Without that, I'm not confident that Jaaron will return.

While you're pounding that drum, maybe you can help find the trees you think that kind of player grows on that Ohio will easily find a ready to go big (not named Tony Campbell) in April or May. Every single school with several scholarships to give is after that guy, and there aren't that many to sign that can be a do everything big.

Can't really tell from this video if Teyvion has a consistent outside shot. But it's readily apparent he can go! I'm excited about the prospect of two quick, athletic, long, get-to-the-rim 6-4 guards eventually teaming in the backcourt in Teyvion and Zach Butler.

Love to see a PG that changes what he does when he penetrates. Lots of easy buckets for his bigs. Like that he looked comfortable with both hands in passing and scoring at the rim. Even if Jaaron stays this was an important get.

Agree with you both here. I like the idea of these two together. We might be seeing a lot more of a 3-guard look in future years as a result of these two.

Point well, taken, OU Van. But I contend the coaching staff has got to diligently try to get this done, and it may require some creativity. The best option may turn out to be a grad transfer from a major program who always as a reserve, but still has an upside. Meaning, a guy who could play a lot for us but would remain a quality bench player at his current school because they've always recruited over him.

I think there are several grad transfers out there that would potentially be good fits. Do they want to come to Athens, or aspire for a "bigger" conference? I'd like to see them find this guys you want, and Saul wants. I'm just suggesting they don't grow on trees and aren't easy to find in the Spring (in my opinion). Especially if the intent is that they contribute big minutes right away.

Sorry for calling you OU Van, OU Country! Seems to me that quite a few of the grad transfers who weren't starters at major programs drop down to a level where they either can start or get a lot of playing time for their final season of eligibility. Then there will be high schoolers who find themselves out of a scholarship for a variety of reasons. For instance, a player who had committed to a school decommits when the school gets a commitment from a higher-rated player who plays the same position. There will also be the James Thompson IV's out there. You investigate them thoroughly, but be ready to pounce!

I believe they're doing all of these things to the max and I'm confident they'll find a player. I just was trying to encourage a poster who stated that what we need doesn't grow on trees for mid major programs. Granted. So you may have to shake a lot of trees to get that player to fall out!

The kid is smart, he was offered by Brown. He was also a top 300 recruit. http://www.maxpreps.com/athlete/teyvion-kirk/uhqCybyeEeaA...

How about a Butler, Laster, Kirk, Vander Plas, Carter look? You've got 3 capable ballhandlers with Vander Plas and Carter being bigs who can step out. Could be a nice change of pace group when Darty and Simmons need rest.

Yes, three true freshmen we know nothing about.

Jeremy Fears was from Joliet, yes? Different high school though.

I understand that we don't know anything about these freshmen yet truly but I do have Saul's track record thus far. He has given us back-to-back All-Freshman Team players, including one who was the top freshman at year's end. He has given us Block and Doug Taylor as solid role players. He has given us Jaaron and Kenny as transfers.

That being said, if you watch Kirk on all the great film available, something that stands out is that he plays defense and that he has great handles. Those people comparing him to Culver or saying he's the "next Culver" are mistaken. Look up any old Culver film and you won't find anything truly about Culver as a player. I was shocked when I first saw his jerky shooting motion and his out of control handles. Kirk has plenty of game film showing his handles and his defense. Culver ended up not being a difference maker on defense.

I also think Butler is that kind of player. He and Vander Plas are State Finalists with Butler winning it all. Gareri had a team like Ellet competing with the big boys. I would prefer a grad transfer big who can allow Gareri and Vander Plas time to develop but I am also jacked at the prospect of our new guys all contributing next year.

Some on this board may say I don't say anything negative but that's because I believe this is the year we break through with SaulBall.

Well that's interesting. So we apparently signed Jeremy Fears nephew to be Jaaron Simmons replacement. It all comes full circle.

Hope he's a good get. Boy do we need a big.

Perhaps you should change your handle to "The Cousin of The Optimist", or something like that?

I would think given how Jeremy's transfer turned out that he would counsel his nephew to stay put. Teyvion obviously would have sought out Jeremy's opinion and the fact that he is coming here means he probably knows he made a mistake.

Speaking of Jeremy, it looks like he is doing well. From his Twitter it looks like he owns a couple of Soul Food Restaurants, has three boys and is coaching the Illinois Old School AAU program. This after playing in Europe for a few seasons. Good to see he's doing well.

I never really blamed him for leaving Ohio. He was obviously great for the program, it just didn't work out for whatever reason.

I think that is correct. He transferred first to Bradley but never played there.

Before I even got to "Ohio Commit" in the thread title, I was thinking "hmm, wasn't J-Fears from Joliet?"

Watching that highlight tape, his style reminds me a lot of Fears. Fears was 6-5 and not really a 3-point specialist. More all-around/slasher who was a great athlete and playmaker. Fears was also very tall for a PG at 6-5. That is exactly what I saw watching Kirk's highlight tape. It's hard to tell from a highlight tape, but it looks like he might be the best athlete on the roster.

I don't buy into the hype about Jaaron leaving, but either way we needed a PG in this class to be ready for next year. This is a phenomenal grab. I strongly agree with 98 on this year being huge for Saul and OHIO. I don't see the need for a big-men that others do. Vander Plas and Gareri in this class are perfect fits for the style Saul wants to play. We've got a bunch of bigs who can shoot. This kid is the perfect PG for a roster like this.

I've seen crazier things happen.

As I said, I'm willing to start with a clean slate. Certainly appears to have the skills. And great point that Fears directed him here for a reason. Yes Fears ended up at USC-upstate and played well. He was the guy that did backflips on the court right? Or am I thinking of someone else?

^I believe vs Detroit or Oakland

I'm so excited about any player compared to Jeremy Fears. JF was one of the most talented guys we've had in our program, and maybe one of the biggest might-have-beens as well. Even had that Ohio rap song mentioning him.. Glad to hear he's doing well. And welcome Teyvion!

Teyvion and Jeremy are not blood relatives, but were neighbors on the same street and became very close friends. They consider each other uncle and nephew.

Jeremy was very involved in encouraging Kirk to choose Ohio. Really appreciates his time at Ohio.

I believe his most highly publicized flip was at the MAC final after we had just erased the 19 pt deficit vs Buffalo
