Ohio is recruiting Mark Mayle out of Malvern, OH. According to his Twitter account, the 2018 PF took a visit to OU a couple of weeks ago.

Toledo has offered.

Full disclosure I'm very aware who this kid is. I graduated from Malvern and have seen him play and get regular updates about him from family and friends. I've heard rumors that he's gotten looks from Iowa, but that could just be a small town rumor mill churning.

At first glance he doesn't look very athletic or quick, but he's got a high motor and quick hops off the floor. He's had a lot of under the basket dunks that seemed pretty effortless due to his length. I will say he needs to put on some muscle and probably develop a few more post moves like a baby hook with either hand. He's still very raw, but he's only going to get bigger and better I think.

This past season he was D4 East District 2nd Team and Honorable Mention All-Ohio as a sophomore. Which I thought was pretty impressive considering his teammate was the Eastern District POY and All-Ohio First Team.

I'm also interested to see if the coach for Malvern adds some higher quality competition (larger division) to the OOC schedule next year to give him a chance to impress and get better. Being a D4 school, it's hard to get a lot of looks from recruiters. If he grows to 6'9" or 6'10" that probably won't matter.

I'm pretty sure, though not 100%, he played with other Ohio recruit Jayvon Graves when they were younger before Graves decided to go to SVSM for high school. I wouldn't doubt they know each other either way and have played around each other even if they are in different classes.

Plays for a King James AAU team for anyone who is into that.

Had a chance to visit with Mark's coach this past weekend. Coach Tucci was also my coach while I was in high school at Malvern so we had a nice chat about the team and the new school Malvern just built. I asked him about Mark and all he could say was "he's special and I love him" and how hard he works. He also had high praise for another player Jaret Majestic, who probably won't end up D1 but could.

Did some digging on the internet, Zach Fleer at 270 Hoops says Mark is getting interest from Clemson, West Virginia, NKU, and Elon as well as the other offers and interest.

I have seen the kid play a ton. He's solid but definitely not for the MAC. Too skinny and has to play in the post. He would get absolutely rolled by MAC bigs.

Yet he has two MAC offers (Kent and Toledo) and an offer from Duquesne. And BG was looking at him at the Regionals in Canton. It's easier to bulk up once you get in college than it is in high school. Plus, you can't teach height and hops.

Shall I list the many players who have offers? I'm just saying that I live near a school in his league. It's a small-school league where very few if any kids ever go D-1. It is full of teams with small players and very few big guys above 6-5. He is an imposing figure in this league AND had a superior point guard this year and his team finished 4th in the league. They made it to regionals out of a weak district. Seems like he'll be solid but we already have a project in Ellis Dozier.

Well, Ohio hasn't offered yet, so perhaps the interest will remain as just interest?

You don't need to tell me about him, I graduated from this high school and played under his coach. What I can tell you is that he's got a ton of interest and the offers are there for a reason. Coach says he's probably the most talented big man he's ever had, and he's had some really good ones who have ended up at D2 programs. You may be right, maybe he is a project, but there's a reason he's gotten to go on visits to WVU and Clemson too.

Don't discount that league though. Yeah, his team finished 4th in the league. You know who finished ahead of them? Two other D3 teams Hiland and Garaway which ended up in the Athens Regional, Hiland getting to the final. Also, a Strasburg team that had ridiculous year, but then they ended up beating them in the D4 district finals in a rematch. There was another team in that league, Sandy Valley, which also made a district final. It's small school ball but it's good basketball. Hiland and Garaway are always a threat to make it to state.

I really do think the kid looks like a solid prospect. I watched him against Strasburg, Garaway, Hiland and TCC and saw some very good post moves, fluid defense and an ability to block shots and rebound. He was a monster in the regional when Malvern should have won. I just think that we are in a position now with Saul where we can get more freshman-ready guys like Jason Carter and I don't see Mayle being that. I do think he will be a very good get for somebody. I just don't see it at OU.

And as for the IVC, I have spent years believing the IVC could compete with the ECOL any day in hoops. I was simply stating that as good as Strasburg's season was, they are still a small Division IV team and it's a small-school league.

And lastly, Coach Tucci is God.

I'll agree with that. I think he's a solid D1 prospect, but I don't think he necessarily fits what Ohio and Saul have going on. Always nice to see a kid from that league do big things. Wish Graves would have to stayed at Malvern and brought us our first state title, but oh well.
