Anyone know his level of interest in staying in Athens? Or his parent's interest in wanting him to stay local?

Pretty sure you, of all people, know that Bobcat Black seats are not present during Tourney. I do not see any other time they are in the Convo

Might want to tell someone to update the Bulldog Blitz page also. Coaches are the same but roster has changed a bit

Athens does not play at the convo, maybe you need some reading comprehension. The statement is; "Buy Monroe's Bobcat Black Seats (for the OHIO game), stay an extra day and catch an AHS game (meaning where they play locally).

Has anyone seen Lutz play recently so they can talk about his skills as a PG, and viability as an Ohio Student athlete?

You guys are asking the wrong questions. Let a professional go to work here.

(Ahem)

Is basketball a game he can play?

Hopefully we can find someone who is closely plugged in to the Athens High athletics scene to offer up some details that we all so desperately want but have not yet received. You'd think there would be at least one person like that around here somewhere.

I saw the kid play as a freshman and as a sophomore and at the OU summer team camp on a team loaded with D 1 football talent. The kid is deceptively quick and smooth and is a quick jumper. His left hand is as good as his right when it comes to ball handling. He's the best kid to come out of Athens (assuming he graduates from Athens) since Steve Bruning who also played for OU. Although a very good player, Steve was not as fundamentally sound as this kid and unfortunately never became what so many had hoped for during his time at OU. A nagging back injury kept him from realizing his full potential. I could go back in the old track scorebooks and check but Steve was a 6'5 or 6'6 high jumper too. Lutz would be a very nice addition to the OU squad.

My roommates worked radio/tv for WOUB back when Steve was at Athens and I'd tag along to see the games. He was every bit of 6'5". He was a lot of fun to watch. Shame about his back because I was sure he would have made an impact at Ohio.

I'm curious Alan - a lot of good was said about Ibi Watson prior to their moving to Pickerington. They are obviously different types of players, but how would you compare Lutz to Watson?

Sorry for the confusion - I meant he could high jump 6'5 or 6'6.

To be fair I didn't see Ibi enough to compare plus I'm old school and a bit jaded when it comes to players transferring schools like he did.

We have been fighting that in Indiana since Everett Case was fired at Frankfort for moving parents into his district.....good thing NC State found a job for him 726-75 as a HS coach and went on to become the Father of ACC Basketball.

Too bad we can't find someone who is in the building on a daily basis and in the gym around practice that may give us some insight.

I am sure if Athens plays Alexander I can get a report. Have to look at the schedule.

Lutz scored 37 last night. He averages 33 per game.

vs Watterson no less. I should be able to get some good input vs Alexander early Jan.

Is he a true 6 foot? Plays the 1 2 or 3 spot? Penetrator or shooter? Good off the dribble or set up shooter? Good handles? Good court vision? Make his teamies better or gets his own? Assists to go along with scoring? Defend well? Lateral speed and quickness? Willing to defer when doubled? Crafty rebounder? BBIQ? All questions I look to ask when I see a kid.

Maybe Wanny will make a rare guest appearance since he retired the nom de plume....or use his current one.....

The 37 was not against Watterson, That was from Friday night. Local paper has him at 33.8ppg, 12rpg, 6apg. One would think with all they lost last year that he has to be the primary scorer. As for the other qualities, I'll defer to someone who has more knowledge, I just base my original comments to the beginning of this thread from the reports of recurit net by several schools at this stage of the game. You'd think some local basketball fans would be able to help you out here though.

While doing some last minute Christmas shoppiing uptown, I just talked to with one of the longest tenured coaches in SE Ohio about Lutz. Direct quote - "he can definitely play for OU." Remember too that he's just a junior.

Amen, Bro! I still remember when Portsmouth's top-ranked football team had to forfeit all of their games back in the 1960s because it was discovered that their star player's father had been given a job at a local business by a booster. Previously, this kid had played for another team in a nearby district. Today this kind of stuff can be done and no one even investigates to discover if there has been a quid pro quo or not. And, I'd bet real money that in some cases these transfers stink to high heaven. But, nobody cares since most Ohio schools now have open enrollment for anyone from anywhere. I had thought, until recently, that state law required open enrollment; however, it does not. My wife's hometown of Bexley does not allow any students to transfer in from other districts. One must live in Bexley to go to school there. Wish more schools would do this.

I think your memory may be failing you. #1, Portsmouth did not thrive in football in the 60's (so they never had a top ranked team) as they were in the old GOL and continually got their heads handed to them, basketball was there thing, and in fact PHS had a losing record in the GOL in basketball as well. And PHS has not forfeited an entire season of wins.

Now, the 1950's PHS had a few strong football teams, and a few in the mid 70's after they got away from the GOL, led by OSU player Norm Burrows.

So, let me ask, were you a fan that he was at Athens at all? Didn't he move into Athens from Marietta?

OK, it may have been in the late '50s rather than the early '60s. Whenever, it did happen, and it was quite a scandal at the time. If I have the time I'll search an online newspaper database I have access to and find the exact date. My point remains that we have vastly different standards today on this sort of thing, and like Alan, I don't think it's an improvement.
