Excellent point "Country" - I feel ashamed I didn't include it. I'm interested where folk would place it on the continuum. Easy to throw it at the end.

But not sure it isn't...

"committed" - "signed" - "enrolled" - "win" - "contribute" - "graduate" and if they can "start" - "star"

Really? Let's say those efforts resulted in a tentative yes or in apparent real interest. Would you not spend any more time, effort or costs because we didn't get a definite 'yes.'

Should we only recruit those we're sure of landing ...and at the least possible cost?

Should there be no extra effort here in light of the special relationship with the father?

You know - you can pretty easily get your message off to Dad or SP - lot's of avenues for you to do that. If you are so passionate about how you think they should manage their business and families - have a a go. Let us know how it shakes out. I am pretty certain your are absolutely wasting your time and resources on here about it.........

There is a tremendous amount of time and communication that goes into recruiting. Yes, we can make an offer, but if we are truly interested in recruiting a kid - then you go all in. But here is a catch no one from Athens to LA has raised. Let's assume Jr. has no interest in coming to Athens. He is standing with an offer from Kentucky after all. If that is the case, Dad may not want to be put in a position where his son has to turn down an offer from the alma mater. I don't think it causes much heartburn, but he has taken steps to be in the inner circle - I can see some on this board feeling betrayed when jr. heads elsewhere - so why deal with it.

Saul is an adult and an experienced coach. Anyone who thinks he has not reached out to the Trent family to gauge the opportunity is naive...or worse. If there was a chance, he'd pursue. If not, why create the illusion or drama (with some).

Personally, I don't care who we offer to. What matters is "interested" - "committed" - "signed" - "enrolled" - "win" - "contribute" - "start" - "star"

It's a good point that private feelers may have been put out.

But not offering because Gary Trent parent may feel bad--what? I gotta think he'll feel bad if we don't offer.

That's a rather cynical reply

Every time someone has a good idea, do you ignore the merit if they can't institute the idea? Do you expect, for example everyone who has a decent insight on politics, to successfully run for President?

Engage the argument. You have good points. You're thoughtlessly dismissive here, though. Doesn't reflect well on you.

I understand the desire to bring him here due to his dad's history at Ohio, but a quick glance of his recruiting page should tell you we have no shot at getting him to Athens:

http://247sports.com/Player/Gary-Trent-Jr-38115

Offers from Duke, Kansas, Michigan St, and Ohio St. Recruits of his caliber are not thinking to themselves, "I want to go play in the MAC." You're looking at a likely 1-2 year player at a national championship contending school, and we don't get those types here. It's not a knock against what we are, just a realization.

Oh, and an offer from Kentucky. I missed Kentucky.

may feel bad - "What"

let me clear that up for you because there is a subtle difference. It is not that he will feel bad. He's a big boy and won't feel bad if we offer and he declines - and he will not feel bad if we don't offer - especially since common sense and intelligence says He and Saul have compared notes and Jr has no interest (and should have no interest) in attending Ohio.

Therefore, by not offering (because Trent has said don't bother), we alleviate putting Sr. in a position to have Jr. turn down Ohio. By not offering, Saul takes the high road - lets fans be upset at him...which from this thread some are. By offering (and then having son say no) that angst can shift to Trent (and it will). He doesn't deserve it. Saul is playing it right.

I have no idea what's going on behind the scenes on this, but I would bet that private feelers have been done. An offer may have been made but Trent Jr is not listing Ohio as a school that has offered. Who knows? Time to move on.

No Jeff. We're not moving on. We're beating this horse into the ground until Gary Trent III is born and is 18 years old.

By that time Charlie Phillips will be head coach and will not recruit Gary III because II turned his dad down.

How is being in a position to try and call your own shots lunatic? I call it enviable.

We have 3 scholarships available for the 2017 class. I would like to see us make one attempt. Recruit a couple of his buddies that may not me p5 players. Trent Jr. is worth 2 scholarships in my opinion. So we offer the package deal and we play on Junior's heart strings offer him opportunities no one else can like:

The first father and son to win POY in the same conference.
First father and son to win Freshman of the Year.
If he decides to play multiple years, first father and son to score 2000 pts at the same school.
With Ohio's great online program your jersey can hang next to dad's in a few years after graduation.
We gave dad a chance now give us a chance.

Junior is a border line McD's All American right now and would give our program instant credibility. The worst thing that could happen is the kid says no. I know one thing for sure he 100% won't be a Bobcat if we don't offer.

Clearly I was a fool for even suggesting we recruit his friends. I had no idea his buddy would've been a 5 star recruit as well.

I feel like if the one-year rule had been in place during LeBron James' recruitment, he would've made some coach carve out seven or eight spots on the current roster and replace them with the entire ASVSM team.

I find players realizing how much leverage they have to be a wonderful development, if only to see the shade of crimson it turns the faces of helmet-haired administrators.

Will 18-year olds use this newfound leverage wisely? Heck no! But I'd much rather see that than a paternalistic system (heck, let's not even call it paternalistic any more because a father actually has the best intentions for his son in mind when making decisions!)remain entrenched.

When a system robs 18-year olds of their right to earn money from their skills, I'm all for them being able to use whatever they can to better their circumstances by other, legal, means. Help a friend get recruited. Demand some playing time promises.

What's been created is a contract without a contract between coach and player. Calipari gets it. It's the thing I actually admire about him.

But it's the stupid system that has forced this.

With each passing day it appears this thread becomes lessand less relevant. This latest development strikes me as this kid might be quite the prima donna. think it's just time to move along. Nothing to see here. If there was any mutual Interest we'd know something by now.

Why would a thread about the son of the greatest player in OUr history, one of the greatest in MAC history, be irrelevant? Well, the thinking that we would ever have a chance to get him here, or that coaches are fools for not spending a bunch of time and travel to try - yeah that part has been irrelevant for a long time.

It will also not be irrelevant every time his fathers name is mentioned accompanied by comments about OHIO on various media all through his NCAA and hopefully NBA playing career.

Interesting quote from Gary about Jeff Boals.

"Even if I did not know Jeff, of all the coaches, he's one of the hardest-working coaches recruiting my son," Trent said. "I can get the schedule for my son's tournaments quicker from him than from my son."
