He could room with a certain QB in Benedict Arnold Hall!

here's an earlier article about Jr, looks like the coaching staff at Ohio State is aware of him as OSU asst Jeff Boals is "like an uncle" to Jr. I can only imagine the reaction here if GT2 takes his talents to Columbus.

So, has anyone confirmed that OUr coaching staff is properly informed yet in regards to the Trent family and their ties to Athens?

After having him on their radar for over a year, Ohio State offered class of 2017 shooting guard Gary Trent Jr. a scholarship on Sunday evening.

At the moment Ohio State joins programs such as Florida State, Minnesota, and Texas Tech in the hunt for Trent Jr., the son of former Ohio University standout and NBA veteran Gary Trent.

A sharp-shooter who isn't afraid to drive to the bucket and bang with the big boys, the 6'5, 190-pound, four-star prospect is attracting attention from many of the top basketball programs in the country, including Duke.

According to the 247Sports, the Saint Paul, Minnesota native is currently considered the 14th shooting guard and 69th-overall prospect in the 2017 class.

If you look at the top 150 recruits nationally each year over the past five years or so, there are normally only one or two kids who sign with mid majors. More used to slip through the cracks and end up at mid majors, but it seldom happens any more.

With a few exceptions here and there, mid majors have to take less talented guys and develop them over time. Sometimes, they end up better than guys who were top 150.

Hope not. Didn't State snub his 'ol man? Time to return the favor. But shouldn't we at least have offered? Geesh!

What makes you so certain? Jeff and Gary are very close, and No one in that basketball office were there 24 years ago.

Couple of reasons. One, a kid from Minnesota does not have an inbred love of the Scarlet and Grey the way a youngster from SE Ohio might...growing up dreaming of playing in Columbus. They are just another team recruiting him. Second, while the management may have change, it is still the same establishment that dissed his father back in the day (and then refused to play his father's alma mater after losing to him in '94). And to your point...3). As Jeff and Gary are so tight, you know that Gary feels Jeff is better than being a lifelong second chair carrying a clip board and saying, "yes coach, I posted the practice schedule." In fact, I would guess that Gary feels in his heart of hearts that his man Jeff will finally interview well and be moving on in the next year or two, or three -- so sending his kid to play for Jeff at OSU doesn't make sense - since Jeff won't be there. Now if Thad Matta gets caught in a compromising position with boosters, a 12 year-old-boy, or something like that, and Jeff gets promoted - then I could see the equation changing. Until then, I don't see the equation changing.

almost everyone (big schools) dissed Gary but Larry. Gary was almost an assured non-qulifier, and did nothing but turn and dunk over 5'10" white kids in the MSL. He had very limited dribbling skills and never took a shot facing the basket until his sophomore year in college. Not many thought his physical prowess would equate to what it ended up.

Sounds like OSU's recruiting report on him. Good thing we saw something better in him - too bad for OSU the institution in his own backyard didn't.

Just for the record Gary was not the only all-state first teamer in the MSL that year, and there was another player who was honorable mention McDonalds All-American. Sorry for the thread drift.

Yes, but only one that was 5 miles away from him. I would guess young GT Junior grew up around a lot of OSU negativity, but I could be wrong.

It would be so awesome if he came here for so many reasons. I recognize he almost certainly will not given his credentials.

I just read about him being the MVP for the USA national team in a tournament for what I'm guessing is U-18. I'm guessing Gary Jr. ends up in the ACC or B1G somewhere. Sounds like he's possibly approaching 5-star status.

I can't boo this. They run one of the best programs out there. It would be cool if Saul would offer anyway, just in case following in dad's footsteps would matter to him. Honestly though, I can't see why any good player wouldn't want to go to Duke.

It would be beneficial to find out if Gary Jr. was in house for the Ohio-Miami game where his dad's jersey was hung in the rafters. He saw a packed Convo that day and saw how awesome it could be. Maybe that made an impression. Was he there?

The young man has not grown up around Ohio University. I'm not sure why anyone could possibly think he'd be interested in us. Good grief, the kid can pretty much go anywhere he wants. Kids like that do NOT go to mid majors any more. Why offer a kid like this? It's futile and possibly could send the wrong message to other young men already on the roster or whom we are currently recruiting.

Trent Jr played a pretty key role in the American U16 gold medal winning team:
