Jeff Quackenbush, ooach at Newark, I believe would rather let Gahanna and Pick Central bring ("recruit") AAU, college-type players into their program, while he'll stick with his program-type, local talent. Less locker-room headaches, parental headaches, and easier to coach. There's a reason Central's coach Jerry Francis had to step down in the middle of the season last year.

Talent-wise, there's no way Newark should be able to stay with Gahanna (lost a close one at home earlier this season) or even Central. His players are not as athletic or long. However, his 6-2 post players will outsmart and outwork Gahanna's 6-8 and 6-9 D-I recruits every minute, every night. His ballhandlers will patiently share the basketball to get open looks most times down the floor and then, this year at least, hit their free throws. The top 2 foul shooters in central Ohio are Dartis and Brokaw-Henderson, both from Newark.

Unfortunately for Newark boys and girls basketball(fortunately for most other sports)is that after next school year the OCC is realigning the divisions and Newark will be in a division with smaller schools (Big Walnut, New Albany, etc.._) where they will be more competitive. The Newark-Central and Newark-Gahanna basketball games have been fun to watch the last several years and hopefully continue as non-league games.

Don't forget Quack won a state title a few years back to with a great player named Greg Avery. He could have done something in college but didn't have to grades so he went down to play at Western Carolina, came back home during break and got a girl pregnant, and I think he dropped out to take care of his responsibilities. So, gotta give him credit for doing that. But Huelva a ball player.

Greg Avery was good and probably could have cracked the rotation as an upperclassmen at Ohio with a strong work ethic, but Jordan Dartis is just better.

Dartis' time as Newark basketball all-time leading scorer was short lived. He was passed on the all-time list last night by classmate Kim Royster, who is heading to Indiana.

The local paper had the Newark H.S. boys and girls basketball coaches on a live chat last night. Dartis and classmate Kim Royster joined in around the 14-minute mark. Both, I believe, come off as well spoken and humble, yet confident.

Best line of the night came from coach Quackenbush, talking about playing rec ball with girls coach Jeff Shumate: "his idea of a post entry is a missed three." When I heard this I envisioned a current Bobcat or two that would fit this description.

So SBH led our intramural team in assists?

I learned very quickly from playing pickup games at Grover that when SBH attempted a shot from deep to run behind the basket for the inevitable airball. Wasn't an entirely bad idea to do the same on his mid-range jumpers.

Jordy's team got the #5 seed in the Division I Columbus Region, District 4 in the upcoming OHSAA Tournament. District Winners advance to the Regionals at Columbus Fairgrounds. Newark got a pretty good draw with the next highest seed in their District being New Albany at #6.

Lancaster falls to nerk to help the conference standings

OUr boy made the shooting prospects in the coming years look bright including hitting the rare 3 and 1

After the Wildcats' Jordan Dartis hit a 3 to start the second half, which gave Newark a 40-22 lead, Lancaster went on a 9-0 run to cut the deficit to 40-31 with six minutes left in the third.

Later in the quarter, Dartis — who led all scorers with 19 points, including hitting 4-of-7 from 3-point range — hit another 3 and was fouled. His free throw gave the Wildcats a 50-34 lead.

Nice response in the post game presser. no "I's" .....all about the we's

"We just wanted to attack the basket and try to play defense because we struggled on defense early, but we did a better job in the second half," Dartis said. "We were in a dog fight, but we slowed them down in the third quarter and we started making shots. This was a good win for us because it was against a rival and we love beating our rivals."

You gotta love everything you've seen from this kid so far. I have to believe he and Block will push to be starters as freshmen.

Have to love the fact that they gave up 22 points in the first half and he considered that struggling. The fact that they nearly doubled them up wasn't his focus.

I still think he will come off the bench because he's more of a guard and we have Jaaron and Ryan back. I think Block is more of a swing and will start when all is said and done (Khari will start but Gavin will take that spot). Dartis will be one of our top scorers though. I think he's going to be a good one. Saul's type of guy is high IQ, good defense, good background, coachable and good shooters with some size. Dartis is all of these.

In my prior post above, I kinda put it the wrong way. As has been said many times on here "starter" isn't as important as getting minutes on the court. I think that Dartis or Block start, and both push for a ton of minutes. As returning players, Taylor, Laster, and Harley will have their work cut out to earn major minutes. The three freshman guards/wings look like quality players.

Maybe but having three guards on the floor, especially since I can see Ryan playing the 3, shouldn't be discounted. We didn't suffer playing long stretches with DJ, Walt and Nick on the court.

It could be argued that's when the team was most effective. DJ, Armon and Tommy were the same way.

I assume that Newark won their first tourney game. Anyone see their game last night? I had planned to make the trip to see them play but decided to wait for a stronger opponent next week.

Congrats to Jordan for earning first team all Central District and Division 1 co-player of the year with Northland's Seth Towns. This also guarantees all state honors.

I'm curious, with this in mind, how early do kids usually get on campus in the summer? It appears there will be a number of guys who need that kind of work.

Saul said that the weight gain will not come from hanging out at McHappy's. I think they are very serious about nutrition and weight training for the off season. Borna or someone else who knows more than me about this can add something here.

I know that Groce started stocking the locker room with things of nutritional value/Muscle milk and Basgere had a very nutritional approach to weight and muscle gain. I am not sure how much of that has carried over. Biggest problem back then was guys would have class till 12 and then run to the COnvo for practice and end up not eating from 8 or 9 till 4 or 5 or later. Skipping meals and getting out of the training room after film when the cafe is already closed is no way to feed an athlete.

Saul is already licking his chops at the prospect of getting the new strength coach with these guys. I suspect the food is still an issue and needs to be addressed at it never got resolved back then and there are no training tables or credence given to athletes and their schedules. Don't know if the meetings with a nutritionist are still in place but that is an integral part of getting these guys on board and conditioned to do what they do.

Holy crap. I couldn't do it. I have a hard enough time eating enough food to keep my stomach happy and I'm not training as a D-I athlete. How could you get anything done on no food? And I doubt that early meal was a big one. Personally, I find Muscle Milk kinda iffy nutritionally, but that's another matter.

Nutrition is still vastly underrated and it seems it's only just now even starting to be appreciated. But you still hear and see stories about guys loading up on McDonald's and the like. Didn't LeBron say he would eat there several times a week early in his NBA career? No bueno. Andre Agassi wrote about eating Wendy's on game days. I know pro tennis is all over the nutrition thing now, but other sports are still behind.
