even scarier zone: Tariq, Antonio and Setty underneath in a 2-3 with Mo and Nehemias or Wiggington (6-6 each) up top! I know it won't come to that but man. Or D.J. up front at 6-5. I finally think we have an athletic, lanky, lean, jump out of the gym type of team that we've been missing in the past few years.

Better yet, forget putting Nehemias or Wiggington with Mo up top. Instead, put Mompremier with Mo up top.

No way will Setty start, he gets beat pretty easy underneath by anyone with good size and he has very little in offensive skills. He can pass and he can rebound but that doesn't make you a starter.

Whether Setty starts or not, with the way he played down the stretch I have no doubt he can give us quality minutes. Right now I view him as a "high energy" guy but if he can improve on the drive to the basket he has shown flashes of he could become a very good weapon for us offensively.

No matter how the exact rotations play out, I feel really good about our overall size and athleticism down low. Many have said Christian likes to go big and with our roster next year I think he has the bodies to do that.

I've seen crazier things happen.

He's hit a couple threes and can drive to the basket. Have him develop a jon smith style mid-range jumper and he could be a nice offensive weapon

Setty starts.

1)  Why not; deserved.

2)  This deserves further discussion.

I don't know if he will start with all the new players coming on board but there is no question
He is in the mix. I reject the argument that he has no offensive skills and furthermore I would like to point out that effective passing is a phenomenal offensive skill. He may be the best passer on the team. As he continues to improve his production the energy he brings becomes even more valuable. You would have to be blind to not see his productivity is trending strongly upward. I love the way he competes and look forward to seeing what Setty will bring next year ...starter or not.

I wasn't implying that he start. I was saying that as a matchup nightmare for a zone he would be nice on the outside of the bottom 3 in the 2-3 zone. And he certainly did earn his minutes at the end of the year slashing and passing. While his shot is not the prettiest he knows when to shoot. He also sets the best picks of any Bobcat player in recent years. He's intense and if he only comes off the bench I'll take it. He was and still is a key to this team and we have him for two more years which is awesome when you toss him in with the rest of the youth.

.379 field goal percentage and .558 foul shot percentage, only Hall was worse and we know Hall was Horrible this year. I wish the kid the best but at 6'9" 196 he needs to add at least 20-25 lbs to be any factor near the basket. You may remember a 3 but I remember a missed dunk. Setty is a high energy guy but they way he is getting used 20 feet away from the basket at all times may be great for his passing or screens but he doesn't have a shot to be any kind of a threat. He almost always passes immediately and unless he can learn to drive to the basket I don't see him starting.

I agree about the need to get stronger however for a 6'9" at a mid major that is not an unusual situation
coming out of the sophmore year.

Those full season stats don't mean much to me as they obviously include the first 2/3rds
of the season when admittedly he was all those things you are describing. Some people on here asking why we even gave him a scholarship. I haven't heard anyone suggest he wasn't scholarship worthy, that crowd has gone silent in the last month.

The missed dunk was bad, embarrassing even however he didn't hang his head kept his energy up playing through it and continued to contribute. You would see many shrink away after exposing yourself like that.
As his playing time increased (due to injuries obviously) and his confidence grew you saw him showing/developing parts of his game you are describing as lacking.

We will see, I do hope he hits the weight room but I see rising stock here and I am a buyer. I think we will be very happy to have Setty and I see him being being productive in all phases going forward. Lets revisit in a year.

The days where a 6-9 guys needs to be a dominant low post player to be effective are long gone.

For "stretch 4's" like Ndour, Setty and Tariq, the most important factor is the ability to put the ball on the floor. Tariq, Ndour and Setty all have the ability to dribble that you don't see from traditional 4's and 5's of old. Combine that with their length and athleticism and they are very hard for teams to matchup with. Most traditional bigs are too slow while traditional wings are too short.

Yeah, more strength and a good jumper makes them much better/more dangerous but the key is the mobility/ballhandling to beat guys off the dribble from space. That is what a stretch 4 is. Everything else is what can really make a guy that much better... We get 2 more years of Setty. Plenty of time for him to develop a more complete game. The core is there though.

A missed dunk?  Who cares.  I guarantee you that Setty put that behind in about a second.

Dude hustles, gets in position to help his teammates and does the things that give us an advantage.  That's been pretty evident from his first games.  As he gained experience, the effort produced more and more.

What's not to like.

Also he's an O H I O guy in the way that Stevie is and Patrick Tafua was/is.

First of all, players are not static entities.  They change over time and usually for the better as they get more experience.  Treg has improved in nearly every facet of his game since December.  His shooting numbers were abysmal early in the year but they have gone steadily up as his confidence has gone up.  Over the last ten games or so he's shooting over 50% from the field and 63% from the line. I expect, much like Jon Smith, his game will expand over time.  And as for his passing I see it as an asset.  Tommy Freeman rarely made "the pass" but his quick ball movement was instrumental in another player being able to make "the pass."   He's the opposite from Bean in that regard.   Plus his energy can be vital over a long season.  I'm a big fan and I'm guessing by the time he leaves Ohio most everybody else will be as well.

Tariq played in an all-star game called the Crab Ball Classic between Baltimore and DC kids.
Highlights (Tariq is #11 in black)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xmQy1YPv7NA
These types of games are often high-scoring games like the NBA all-star game with limited defense so it is tough to take away too much from just watching the highlights. This game did have recent Toledo PG commit Stokes (had a really nice game) and a TON of other D-1 commits who are pretty highly ranked.

It is easy to see why people are so high on Tariq. He can jump out of the gym and defensively his arms seem to go on forever and he has an instinct to go for the blocks. He is still thin but it is clear he has been hitting the weights pretty hard especially in the arms.

Hopefully he is able to get to OHIO for the summer session. The hard work over that session with the coaching staff should really improve his game. Offensively I think he will benefit from being around our other big guys. That'll help him carve out a role.

Edit:
Here is breakdown on the game that mentions Tariq
http://mymindonsports.com/?p=7225
"Tariq Owens struggled a bit offensively but was phenomenal on the defensive end, pulling down 10 rebounds and erasing four shots"
(he had 4 points)

Teamwork and defense are very high priorities on that video.  You can definitely tell how a guy's game will translate into college ball.

Not sure if he gets off the ground as quickly as JS but looks like a similar player..hopefully with no QUIT but judging by his father/son story we wont have to worry about that ( : Good luck to Tariq cant wait to see him in action!

#25 white team is a TANK, and they have a couple other armoured personel carriers on that team. Tariq shows finesse, and skill. Needs to bulk up determination on his "brain" muscles (read "Ass" - blocking out). Arms look fine.......can he hold onto the ball when the opposing players swat at it up high or down low? Does he have "quick"  instinct to go right back up, or compelling need to unneccassarily put it down for a dribble or two on the floor before going back up to the rim or backboard?

Tariq Owens, a 6-9 four-star prospect, is planning to ask Ohio for a release from his Letter of Intent, according to his AAU coach.

Preach it, brother.  Maybe we'll be lucky and retain some of the commits...I hope we do.  But you are exactly right.

The other side of the coin is that we will benefit from the recruiting ties of whomever Jim Schaus hires.

Tariq seemed pretty excited about following the team during the season.  He just may have a special relationship with JC.  Plus, he hasn't really spent any time on campus yet.  If you spend time in Atown and then want to leave, there is something wrong with you and you were looking for any excuse to go.  I'm not ready to say that about Tariq.  I hope he stays.
