OUPride, Well, McDavis did keep that promise in one respect: OU-HCOM is now the largest medical school in the state in terms of enrollment, if you include the two new campuses in Dublin and Cleveland. I know you were talking UG enrollment, and I'm sure that's what McDavis was talking about, too, but I thought the growth of the medical school under McDavis deserves mention. He really didn't have too much to do with it, but the head guy (or gal) always gets credit or blame for the things that happen during his (or her) tenure. The key factor spurring that grow, of course, was the $120 million gift from the Ohio Osteopathic Foundations. Former Dean Jack Brose gets most of the credit for negotiating that deal.

Agreed on the med school, and fundraising kept pace with Miami too. I'm certainly willing to give McDavis credit for the things that went well during his tenure. I'm, however, just left with a gnawing feeling that his administration ended up being one of missed opportunities amidst his grandiose talk. From Nellis' early interviews and talks, it seems as though he is going to be a little more grounded. When he says that he's not looking to change Ohio's freshmen class profile, I don't think it's defeatism so much as a realistic appraisal of the current competitive and demographic landscape. At the end of the day, I'd rather be pleasantly surprised at achievements outpacing expectations than with a lot of talk leading nowhere.

An interesting and disheartening conversation with a colleague the other day:

His daughter has been looking at colleges and she has visited Miami, OSU, Kent State, and BGSU. She didn't even want to take a visit to Athens. He said she had zero interest. She ended up hating OSU (too big) and Miami (too preppy). She didn't really care for Kent (generic feeling), but she fell in love with BGSU because, in her eyes, it felt like the perfect college town.

This is a smart girl with good grades and test scores who attends an "elite" private high school on scholarship. No doubt in my mind that if she thought Bowling Green was the perfect college town she'd be blown away as soon as she stepped foot in Athens. But she didn't even consider Ohio. That's frustrating.

Interesting.

My pops used to take us to various colleges and park us in a gym while he judged gymnastics meets. I knew at an early age BG was a place I could never attend... I suppose the feeling comes from the fact that the times I was there it was always as cold as Siberia with wind picking up speed as it raced across IL and IN before it finally hit the dorms on campus. FIrst Time I was ever there in 50 years when it was over freezing/32 was last summer.

never argue with idiots, they bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Winter comes and asks how you spent your summer.....

Very interesting in light of a candidates forum I attended yesterday in Baker Center. The first of four candidates for the open position of VP of advancement and the CEO of the OU Foundation spoke to the university community and then took questions from the audience. One of the things he mentioned was branding. In my question to him I briefly recounted the story I've told on this board numerous times through the years that during my yearbook days working with kids in schools all across Ohio when I asked seniors what they're going to do next year, most say "go to college." When I asked if they are considering OU, too often I hear "my mom wouldn't let me go there." The question to the candidate was what were his plans to improve our branding so that I don't hear those answers in the future.

She must have seen their tree.

Haha it certainly took me by surprise. I haven't been there in years but I don't remember it being a particularly attractive place. FWIW, it was unseasonably warm fall day when they visited and he warned her that the winter would be way worse than she's used to but she didn't seem to care.
