I saw an article in The Post about the Student Senate elections.

Couldn't believe there were only around 2100 ballots cast.

According to the article, that's about 1/3 the number of ballots cast for the "conceal/carry" referendum.

It seems like the majority of students who vote have some type of "involvement" with the candidates for a particular ticket.

I was also wondering,can/do tickets ever use the same "party" name, year to year ?

My experience is that turnout is typically at about this percentage of students.

What power does the Student Senate have? They can not tax nor legislate any thing on campus that matters. It's just a bunch of college students pretending to be politicians and not doing a very good job at that.
Students are not going to waste their time voting in an election where the outcome will not impact their lives in any shape or form.

That's always the been true.

Student leaders have two ways to proceed: provide services (guide to off-campus housing, etc, etc) and address political issues.

Of course, that's true of any elected officials...although Student Senate has only advisory power, unlike government office holders.

That said, student leaders can use enthusiasm, logic and the power of moral force.

Otherwise, the choice would seem to be to just give up.

If I'm not mistaken, there have been leaders who were not elected officials who have had great effect on their societies.

So, sure, Student Senate has no specific power. But that's a 'deal with it,' that can be overcome.
