I realize this link might put some who read this board in a foul mood. However, it is a link from a prominent think tank. Read away!

He had a pretty good article on the OpEd page in the Wall Street Journal yesterday too.

On the less serious idea of Dr. Vedder taking a position in the Department of Education, I don't think he'd want the headache

Yes mf279801, no doubt about it, that job would certainly be a headache. However, who knows Dr. Vedder may think for two or three years, what could it hurt to give it a try at this point in your career, not much to lose.

Vedder is the same guy who while on the Athens school board actually promoted jettisoning off the poor sections of the Athens district to Trimble (one of the poorest 5 districts in the state) saying they deserve each other. Now, explain to me how this guy cares about education and/or has any answers to the problems.

Billy the Cat can you find where he made that statement? In most circumstances those residing outside the city's boundaries prefer to be in the rural district's boundaries.

In the 80s, when I was an undergrad, I distinctly remember a couple of progressive professors openly making a point that Athens was too "elitist." They were against the phasing system (I have no idea if it is still in place.) They purposely sent their children to the Alexander district.

Those comments mean that he should blend in perfectly with the current administration.

Where is the proof that he ever said such a thing? In addition, just because you spend money on education doesn't mean that you will be successful. If that were the case, the Cleveland Public Schools (and most big city schools) would be the epitome of public education.

Yes, the amount of $$ spent does not dictate the outcomes. My wife and I split our time between two states during the year. One place has a population of 25K and the other about 35K to 40K. The 25K town spends over $16,000 per student and the other place spends $8800 per student. End result? No statistical difference in the results of the students. And the place that spends just $880 is a Title I school, meaning more poor kids/families.

Not to bring politics into this but the $16,000 a year student funding is in a liberal college (Bowdoin) town in Maine. The $8800 a year student is in a conservative place in the southeast. I know with 99.99% certainty how both voted local, state and national in November.

My conclusion is spend, spend, spend in education isn't the solution.

I wonder if Dr. Vedder is more like the type that's good at analyzing things and offering his opinions, and less like the type that wants to implement things and be held accountable.

Funny, Vedder wants to cut funding to education and he's a hero to some on this board. He wants to cut football and he's an embarrassment to our University....hmmmm

I was in Athens at that time and coaching at Athens High. If memory serves me right his comments had more to do with the fact that when Athens, The Plains and Chauncey consolidated in the late 60s that the latter school district would have been better served going north to Trimble rather than south to combine with Athens - that it would have been a better socioeconomic mix.

Today in the Athens City School district, it's that wide range in SES that is causing all the fuss over the possible restructuring of the district's elementary schools. There are two very distinct sides and one side actually has yard signs. Most would characterize that group as the elites or OU academics. It's getting pretty ugly here in town.

There was in fact an attempt at the time by Trimble school supporters to get the Chauncey-Dover school district to consolidate with Trimble Township schools. I know this because my Dad was one of the advocates of that idea and was actively involved with the group. A number of meetings were held including advocates of this option in both districts and the local school boards of Trimble and Chauncey, but in the end the Chauncey school board elected to consolidate with Athens.
