And now you have the student senate stealing student social security numbers.

This group is an embarassment to the University and is doing a disservice to fellow students.

The leaders should be ashamed of themselves.

I've seen crazier things happen.

You might want to do a little research before posting your accusations.

Lets take a look at the article you just linked to:

"Home addresses and the last four digits of nine Ohio University students’ social security numbers were allegedly stolen from the Student Senate office Wednesday, according to Caitlyn McDaniel, senate vice president."

^^^^^^^^^^^^
There you have it, right from the opening of the article YOU just linked...

Now from the following paragraph....
"“This was a political theft meant to screw over student government, not for identity fraud. No students are at risk,” McDaniel said.
The stolen contact information, which was not Student Senate property, has not yet been returned."

So, you have a senate vice president openly admitting the social security numbers were stolen, then she goes on to try to downplay the significance of this theft and write-it off as harmless political espionage....

WHAT A JOKE.

Why did student senators or folks in the student gov't office have this information to begin with?

Seems like a simple question for the Post to ask.

Exactly. This group has no need for that information. In reality, this group has no need for ANY information seeing that they don't actually do anything... The Post not asking the tough questions seems about what I've come to expect from them...

I'm not surprised we saw the student senate try to sweep this under the rug claiming it wasn't the full number and that the intentions here didn't put anyone at risk... They don't even know who did this... Curious the Senate VP feels confident enough to speculate on motive.

Prior to this incident, while the Senate was a joke, it didn't seem to me that they were breaking laws outright.

With this all going down, it wouldn't shock me if we saw charges brought against some of these members.

Which laws have they broken?

This article offers significantly more information.
http://www.athensnews.com/ohio/article-44288-data-from-se...
It is good to know that only 9 students are at risk here and those students willingly provided their personal information to this group.

JSF, it would appear obvious that there is a potential theft charge for one student senate individual here. It wouldn't be an absurd argument to suggest the two individuals engaging in this sketchy office transaction have some fault for this situation... Not to mention whoever authorized this nonsense... But hey, fault does not always equal a criminal charge. I'm not knowledgable on privacy law. Maybe nothing criminal will come and this will all go down via lawsuits for negligence. Or maybe nothing at all happens, and the Student Senate continues to operate as a pointless organization contributing negatively to Ohio University.

So far on this page we have gone from the "student senate stealing student social security numbers" to possibly/probably a senator stealing partial social security numbers from the student senate offices that were voluntarily provided to the student senate by a few students.

Not defending the student senate institution, but sounds like the entity has not 1. stolen anything and 2. not done anything unethical with respect to student privacy.

What the senate is "guilty" of is poor protection of information since the data was not under lock and key - which, apparently given the one senator, was a necessary measure.

Another "partial number" apologist.

Sorry, criminals can do a lot with the last four digits of a social security number. In the A-News article posted, they admitted full numbers might have even been given...

"partial number" apologist? Care to explain or is that just a rant?

Sorry, I must not have been clear. I am not defending the criminal act of the individual senator that stole the information, including the partial (or whole) numbers. Theft is theft.

But there appears to have been no "stealing" of numbers (partial or whole) by the senate itself. The individuals admit they gave the info to the senate voluntarily.

The Post is controlled by the current senate commissioner of Governmental Affairs, Will Klatt. If he's on campus, they function as a glorified newsletter for him. It was the same when he was an undergrad, it got better the few years he was away, and now they've relapsed.

It was fun reading the A-News article today, where they quoted the VP on the increased RA compensation.

SENATE VIEW: University caving due to fear of student unionization

REALITY: Res Life finally achieved goal of full room coverage for RA's, a goal that was stated by then director Judy Piercy in 2005. Incremental increases occurred all along to increase from the then-coverage of 50%, save a few years where the budget cuts from the state slowed down the process some.

I have not been following all of these machinations very closely. All I can say is reading this thread just makes me think that the old saying "the more things change the more they stay the same" is true. It's almost like a déjà vu back to my college days at OHIO: Mistrust between administration and student senate. All kinds of shenanigans going on. Student senate thinks they have a lot more power and influence than they actually do. Administration gives lip service to listening to students. ETC.

I think the only difference is this year you got a full blown anti-establishment senate for the first time in a long time. Usually it's administrative puppets looking for resume references, hesitant to rock the boat too much.

End result? The same, but the administration doesn't even have to pretend to listen to this year's senate, because everyone thinks they're bat#### crazy...

Well, maybe it is déjà vu all over again, because when I was in school the student leaders thought everyone over 30 was evil and The Establishment was a dirty word. There were sit-ins in Cutler and one esteemed graduate, who is now pretty famous, even countenanced the possibility that burning down Cutler Hall might be an effective means of protesting everything from the Vietnam War to en loco parentis. When it comes to being anti-Establishment these guys and gals on the current Student Senate are bush league! ;-)

Disclaimer: I'm very glad that the unnamed person above did not go through with the burning. I suspect that it was actually said as a hypothetical without any real intent to carry through, but the fact that such sentiments were uttered gives you some idea of the wacko thinking on campus at that time.

OU has decided to cut some speeches out of commencement to save on time (including Senate President), but I have a feeling given our crazy Senate that keeping her as far from a microphone as possible had something to do with it.

I get not wanting her to ruin the moment for thousands of students who don't give a rats ass about her dramatically differing worldview, but it is cowardly all at the same time if that truly had anything to do with it.

Based on the article in yesterday's (3/24) the Post, the President of the Student Senate got a dose of reality over her and other students' actions blocking a street during a protest.
