In September they fired Doug Williams as head football coach.  Tuesday, players met with administrators to complain about that firing and having to take buses on long road trips.  The meeting got "increasingly negative" and the players walked out.  Yesterday, they reportedly boycotted practice.  Today, the interim coach was fired and replaced by the defensive coordinator.  So they're working on their third coach this season -- and it's only mid-October.  They should call it Grumbling.

I approve of this message.

They better get the airplane charter situation figured out before their longest upcoming road trip, from Grambling LA to New Orleans LA on 11/30/13.  4.5 hours on a bus is unacceptable for what will likely be an 0-11 FCS team.

Paraphrasing one Sean Carter, they oughta be in Boeing jets, Global Express, slammin' Bentley doors, and poppin out of Porsches while their blueberries still connect.

What a bunch of prima donnas. You're playing at the low end of FCS football. Bus trips are part of the gig...deal with it!

With that said, get off my lawn!!

They also had to go without meals while on the road. They had to sit through 12 hour bus rides, then play with an empty stomach

Always more to the story, and such conditions are not right!!!!  At some point, you have to make a committment that we are either having the sport and doing it right, or at least pretending.  And 1,500 and 1,200 mile one way bus rides are not pretending, especially when you add the fact that on the 1,500 mile trip they athletes did not get fed.  Their opponent Alcorn State (Indy was game site and was neutral) flew to the game and won 48-0).  If you cannot pay to get them there, don't play the game.

Back in my day we had some miserable trips.

According to USA Today, they were unhappy about getting "all meals" on road trips, so apparently they got some.  They don't say which meals they didn't get; my guess is that it was on the trip back.  Still, you can't expect hulking football players to play well without adequate food, even if the meals they didn't get were post-game meals.  It affects recovery time.

This is the most complete story I've seen so far on the situation. Man, Grambling is in bad shape:

When I first read this thread title, without my glasses on, I thought it said "TOS to Gambling."  I thought we were going to be talking about some innovate Rhode Island fund-raising schemes.  Instead we are talking about football players not getting properly feed and lower-level FCS travel budgets.  My conclusion: Let's take a gamble and host Grambling next year for FCS game, and part of our payment could be free bus tuneups.

It's an interesting story and really says a lot about the financial situation not only at Grambling but probably other 1AA schools.

But I wish writers would stop using spellcheck and get back to old-fashioned proofreading.  I bristled when I saw this quote from Grambling's president:  "It is likely that it could take years to ever get back to the Gambling athletic image that it once enjoyed."  Ugh.

Just read the article link and my first reaction is to feel very sorry for Grambling University.  My second reaction is that a lot of their financial woes are likely due to mismanagement.  Some of this is reminiscent of the problems a number of years ago at Ohio's historically black state school -- Central State.  I don't recall all of the details, but the state had to step in a take over certain accounting and administrative functions for a period of time to set the school back on an even keel.  As far as I know, things at Central State have been much better since that forced reorganization and restructuring.  Perhaps the state of Louisiana needs to do likewise.  This is obviously just a gut reaction as I know nothing about this situation other than that article and what's been posted here.

This is becoming a movie. The entire team didn't show up for the bus for tomorrow's game:

I hear lawyers firing up their computers.

Grambling starts cancelling scholies.

Players sue for breach of contract because the school hasn't lived up to its part of the agreement (i.e., adequate facilities, transportation & meals) to help players to succeed.

The ugliness could be just starting.

This just sounds like another case of a government entity  complaining about problems that have only been incurred through participation in activities they simply CANNOT afford.

Wow. I guess if all you have is a hammer (government=bad) everything looks like a nail.

There's playing loose in life and then there's playing with a hypodermic needle in your arm.

Tell me how they can withstand funding cuts from over $36 million to less than $14 million and still afford to play football. Only an addict would know.

Here's the letter from Grambling players to the administration that was acquired by ESPN.

The SWAC is an embarrassment to college athletics.  A three ring circus of mismanagement.  Sad, really.

It seems to me that Grambling should be held up as a bright shining example of the Tea Party's idea of higher education. If the football team has it so bad just imagine what the dorms and science labs must be like. Nice going Louisiana!

Get a clue bozo. If the tea party was in charge of that budget they wouldn't have sports.

If the Tea Party was in charge those kids would never have a chance to go to college, because they would be slaves.
