I was at OU from 1977-82, and I can remember when the Nick was called the Deck.

I worked at the Nick for two years, beginning as the guy who came in at 2 a.m. to clean the place. Mercifully, that lasted only a quarter before moving to doorman, where I was probably the least intimidating bouncer in Athens. But four quarters working behind the bar was a great gig.

Does anybody remember a bar out on Union Street, and the "magic bus" ran from uptown out to the bar? Was out by White's Mill, I think, maybe called the Creekside or something. Louie the bagel guy used to sing and play piano there. They would have 75 cent Heineken, quarter-shot nights - a well-spent Lincoln.

I also remember Bojangles and watching the New Vinton County Frogwhompers play...

Edit: Just noticed No. 29 above. That was it...

Was Creekside the 'old' Millview East that caved in when heavy rains hit it back in the 70's? 25 cent schnapps and all you can drink on Thursday I seem to recall.

Throw in Tools Tavern ( became Hanger 5) and Cripple Creek (Mary Johnson's location which begat Tony's) and CJ's which was the precursor of the Pub.
Again, remember that Ski has a t-shirt that list defunct bars.  I think there are two editions.

Message Not Read  CURRENT/DEFUNCT BAR LISTING FOR TOAB (TOUR OF ATHENS BARS) OR COURT ST. SHUFFLE/CRAWL
   Posted: 1/25/2012 11:02:28 AM

Thanks to everyone for participating in the creation of a CURRENT AND/OR DEFUNCT bar listing for the "TOAB" which stands for "TOUR OF ATHENS BARS" . This adventurous drinking endeavor (initially attempted by Dave Morehead, BBA 75, Jeff West, BBA 75, Tim Nye, BBA 75 & Mark "Puffy" Hartman, BBA 78) challenged participants to visit every bar in Athens within 24 hours and drink at least one beer or alcoholic beverage in order to complete the "TOAB". Since I see the Sportsman on the list which was really a restaurant with a bar, I need to throw in Chicillini's (sp), Ardo's and Beards.

I heard at one time there was something like 40 bars operating in Athens and now there isn't even half that many. Some great names too for establishments and not just sports bar caliber titles. The must of constricted the number of liquor licences in Athens County at some point in time. Where were all these bars listed located? I know Swanky's was in the building with Burger King. What about the office block north of the BP station? Not much has changed in regards to bar locations the past 15 years except for BW3's on Union and Skippers/Nick out, Broney's in and Blue Gator out.

I'm sure that there were some long ago bars that were missed, because even us old farts don't go back that far.  But one that surely belongs on the list from that era was the Atheneon, where big band leader Sammy Kaye got his start (and I only know this because I read about it somewhere).  I do remember hearing the Swing and Sway with Sammy Kaye show on the radio, though.

I don't remember the bar where Sammy Kaye got his start, but I did see him and his orchestra in Athens once when he came back for Homecoming in the mid 1980s, and did a nice performance in the Baker Center Ballroom.

The bars on that other list that bring back memories for me are:

The Tavern -- "Meet you at the Tavern for a Michelob -- after the game"
The West Side Tavern
Oak Room (in its original location)
The Miillview (when there was actually a mill to view)
Conte's Inferno
Jiminnots (sp?)

Buy a bar and change the name, of course.  My suggestion:  Swanky's.

It would be great if you could put addresses to these old bar names so we could see where they're located.

this thread really illustrates how time marches on. I never thought to consider how frequent bars open/close/change names, I always just assumed that they were always there and always would be, kind of like the pyramids or stonehenge. I used to feel a little sad when I'd hear about a bar from my days close or change names, now I realize its quite common!

well done.

If you are looking to fill in addresses:

Events turned into Skippers
Night Court turned into Evolution
Uptown Sitdown turned into The Pigskin (after a very brief stint as Doctor Pizza)

I don't know about The Deck, but the Nickelodean was not where the Junction is. It was under the College Inn (is that Bromley Hall now?). The address should be Union Street.

Gee Willickers was in the alley behind something on Court Street, maybe the movie theater on the west side of the street. I think it used to be called something else--Dante's maybe? I don't know where Dante's was, but from the description I've read on here, it sounds like Gee Wee's.

McSweeney's / The Dugout was on N. Court after you crossed State Street it was immediately on the left in the basement.

In the early '70's what was eventually the Blue Gator was a large, low key bar in which I attended my first and only rush party (for the free beer).  I thought I'd recognize the name on the ever growing list but nothing rings a bell. Does anyone else know the place I'm thinking of?

Also the Cat's Den was first on North Court (not Union) next to the laundromat and carryout in between the dept store (Belk's?) and the Athens Hotel.  This I know to be true because the back door practically opened into my apartment there and we had a constant stream of visitors looking to crash when the Den closed; that is if we weren't in the Den.

It was the Tavern . . . then The Greenery . . . then the Blue Gator . . . and an now empty shell.

When it was The Greenery it had the reputation as the favorite bar for Athens High School students with fake IDs.

OK, since no one else has mentioned it, I'll mention one other bar that was called by my teenage friends when I was in high school the "Slippery Tit."  I have no idea what the real name of the bar was.  It was located on old U.S. 33 just over the hill on the right as you went southeast out of Athens -- about halfway down the back side of Morrison and Brown Hill.  I think the bar was just out of the city limits, which I believe was at the top of the hill.  So the bar might not have technically been in Athens, but it was probably close enough to be included in this list.  This bar was in a small white clapboard building and probably had a maximum occupancy of 25 including the bartender and any other workers.  Anyone know the actual name of this bar?  Sorry for the colorful language, but that's all I can remember, and you know how teenage boys can be.

Just came across this thread. Very interesting. Since watering holes seem to be a part of the sports experience, here are a few additional points…

I think the most knowledgable person on old Athens bars is Jerry "Ski" who’s seen them all. Many have already referenced him in earlier posts.

The Cat’s Den was located at 13 N. Court. The Cat’s Den was previously called the Athenean (sp?). The Cat’s Den burned down (cause was a lightning strike) along with the Belk-Simpson Department Store at 15-17 N. Court on May 20, 1982. The Cat’s Den was owned by a guy named Dave Sullivan who reportedly died of cancer. The owner of the Little Ritz at 110 West Union apparently was friends with Sullivan and changed the Little Ritz name to the Cat’s Den in Sullivan’s honor. Today the Cats Den site is a parking lot. If you want to know where it was exactly, the "Cat's Den" (13 N. Court) was to the immediate right of the bar now called Lucky’s at 11 N. Court. in the 1970's, the "Lucky's" site was a women's clothing store called "The Fair Store".

Prior to becoming The Pub in 1974, the location at 39 N. Court was a bar called J.C.’s after its then owner John Collins. Prior to that it was called “Jim’s 42”. I have no real info on Jim’s 42.

Some confuse J.C.’s with “C.J.’s” which was at 14 N. Court where the “Red Brick Tavern” is today. That site (14 N. Court) was home to a bar called “The Deli” in the 1970’s. It also later housed a bar called “Wings and Rings”.

I’m not sure if anyone mentioned “Harpo’s” at 128 West Union which was owned by Charlie Prakas and his son Tom. Harpo’s briefly became a bar called the “Colorado Mining Company” after Harpo’s closed. The building is now an Indian restaurant.

While we’re down West Union, some may remember the “Roaring Twenties” which was located at 120 West Union right near Depot Street. It was across W. Union from the old train station. For a time the “Roaring 20’s” was also called “The Jamboree” and in the 1960’s it was “The Star Bar”. I believe it was owned by members of the Abraham Family and Julie aka “Black Julie” (an Abraham family member) worked there. Today the site is occupied by a bar/restaurant called “Grinders”, but I don’t think its the same building. I have not been able to confirm whether the original structure was torn down or if its just a really good remodeling job.

Someone mentioned the “Millview”. it was located at 603 West Union across the river from White’s Mill. Hence the name “Millview”. The building is still there and is called the “Millview Building”. I believe it is an office building today.

“Swanky’s” was located at 34 S. Court not 32 S. Court. It had several partners, but the face of the place was Ivan Faske who looked like Frank Zappa’s twin brother. (If you’re under age 50, google an image of Frank Zappa). It existed for ten years from 1972-1982. Prior to being Swanky’s it was briefly called “Kip’s Bay” and before that it was “Conti’s (not Dante’s) Inferno”. In the 40’s and 50’s it was a restaurant called “The Rainbow Room”. At one time that restaurant was owned by a guy named Jim Anastas. After Swanky’s closed, someone tried to turn the site into a “juice” bar, but obviously that went nowhere. It ended up becoming a restaurant called “The Parthenon”. On March 12, 1984 the entire block burned down (apparently due to an electrical fire that started in Paulinda’s Children’s Shop at 30 S. Court). In addition to the old Inferno/Swanky’s location at 34 S. Court, Carpenter’s Hardware at 32 S. Court and Kerr Hardware at 36 S. Court and the Athens Flower Shop at 38 S. Court were all destroyed. The front facade of these buildings was saved, but everything in back of it was rebuilt. To visualize the exact location of the former Inferno/Swanky’s they were right where the two green awnings for CVS are today.

More later if this thread gets revived.

That does sound very familiar. I think you've nailed it. Thanks.
