Thank you for reviving this thread. Anytime reference to the Boss Groover brings back happy memories. Which sub shop did he own(Eatery?)

It was the Hole in the Wall sub shop and, back in the day when I was racing in SCCA, Ed would do a bit of sponsorship with the "best buns in Athens" logo on the back of the MG.
He's still doing the Boss Groover gig now from Philadelphia. Here's the link:
http://web.mac.com/vrygdyr/Philadelphia_Oldies_DJ_-_The_B...

Nice to bring back the memory. The shop was next to the Phase, by the way.

Thats right, thanks! Didn't they sell short shorts for the girls with the "Best Buns in Athens" sig on the rear?

Another nice thought about Boss Groover at the Long Branch Saloon. The Boss would give away frosted pitchers of draft beer if patrons could name the song and artist he was playing at the time. The crowd would go wild if someone won a pitcher of beer.

Can anyone name the club/bar in basement of Bromley Hall where the Boss Groover spinned his records?

Are you talking about the old Nickelodeon? When Bromley was still The College Inn?

This thread took off from Siberia and ended up somewhere quite nice. Almost like an oral history of Athens.

I only held a regional and not a national license in SCCA but those days are well behind me now, though I do miss them.  (As an aside, I did the Bondurant course while it was still at Sears Point and had the full carousel.)

Yes, I remember RD, the Nick Manager!!!!! What a great guy!!!!

Has anyone heard about the infamous "TOAB" It stands for "TOUR OF ATHENS BARS" . I remember me and my college roommates, Dave Morehead, and Jeff West tried this very adventerous drinking endeavor. The participants must visit every bar in Athens within 24 hours and drink at least one beer or other alcoholic beverage to become a winner of the "TOAB". Can everyone help in remembering all of the Athens bars noted below (these bars are not listed in any particular order):

1. The Long Branch Saloon
2. The Graduate
3. The Cat's Den
4. Mr. Magoo's
5. Club 33

Please Note: I know many more bars than this, but thought it would be fun for others to remember their favorite watering hole in good ole Athens, home of Ohio University, one of the top ten party schools in the USA.  Let's see if we can come up with all the bars.

Some of the places I frequented don't even make the list......long gone before you young pups took over......Dantes Inferno which was centrally located uptown (think it's a fastfood place npw) and The Draught House which was across from the Pub on the corner......speaking of The Pub it was there but uner a different name.

What was the bar down by the old train station.....The Roaring Twenties?....it was another one I went to a few times.

Jimanott's and the Towne House.  Wasn't there also a bar on Court St. known as the Lantern?

[Second edit:  I missed the listing of the Lantern in a previous post.]

My favorite was a tight call between The Crystal Casino and The Junction.  One I haven't seen mentioned yet is Hanger 5...Some good memories there.

I came across this database just now too...Thought you all might enjoy it...

http://www.athensohiobars.com/defunct-bars

Also the TOAB is still around but is now referred to as the Court Street Shuffle and was when I was there...

I won't forget the time I was in 12 East and the cops came in to tell the owner the DJ was playing music too loud. Never thought I would see that in an Athens bar.  My underage friend next to me almost sh!t a brick when they came in. Luckily, she didn't run.

Club 33 required wheels.  If you had those, you missed out if you didn't hit Dean's Midway at least once to catch Mark Markham and the Bogus Brothers.

I was at OU from 1977-82, and I can remember when the Nick was called the Deck.

I worked at the Nick for two years, beginning as the guy who came in at 2 a.m. to clean the place. Mercifully, that lasted only a quarter before moving to doorman, where I was probably the least intimidating bouncer in Athens. But four quarters working behind the bar was a great gig.

Does anybody remember a bar out on Union Street, and the "magic bus" ran from uptown out to the bar? Was out by White's Mill, I think, maybe called the Creekside or something. Louie the bagel guy used to sing and play piano there. They would have 75 cent Heineken, quarter-shot nights - a well-spent Lincoln.

I also remember Bojangles and watching the New Vinton County Frogwhompers play...

Edit: Just noticed No. 29 above. That was it...
