Maybe that's why the MAC schedule 20 conference games this season. They might be hoping each team gets to actually play 16 to 18 games.

Can the NCAA/MAC force players/personnel to take the vaccine when available in order to be eligible?

Yes, unless the individual has a medical condition, such as an allergy to the vaccine, that would cause the person harm or if being vaccinated is against the person's "sincerely held" religious belief. https://www.healthline.com/health-news/can-your-employer-...

So players are now conveniently employees again. Amazing how the sporadic application always suits the NCAA, schools and those in power.

No, they're not really employees but students actually have fewer protections than employees do (unionization, employment contracts, etc.). I don't think this has actually been litigated but it's reasonable that if the university can require employees to be vaccinated (with some exceptions) then they can require students to be vaccinated (with those same exceptions). The university does require students to certify that they've been vaccinated against meningitis and some other things, so requiring covid shots probably is within reason. Problem is, because the vaccine is in short supply most 18-25-year-olds probably won't be in the eligible groups in most states for a year or more. Who gets vaccinated when is up to each state.

I agree we don't, but bear in mind that many of the players in both football and basketball truly seem that they want to play.

I would say the odds are high that March Madness gets interrupted. UNLESS...maybe there's a way to get players vaccinated prior to? I'm not suggesting they should be the priority, but if supply allowed for it, it may ease some of the issues.

Well first off the athletes are not in any special line to get the vaccination. They will receive theirs when the general public of college students receive theirs. (In ohio anyway).

It may well still be interrupted but I certainly think utilizing the “bubble” will sure improve the odds of pulling it off.

I like how some assume vaccinations are going to magically make all this go away and sports/life will just go back to normal. Many thought the same for masks.

Neither are true.

Not calling it a BUBBLE round here. The local news is saying "controlled environment in and around Indianapolis". Reporting that each team will be given a full floor in one of 4 hotels with practice courts in the convention center and access via underground access tunnels. Busses to Bloomington, Banker's Life, State Farm and Laffy will be sanitized and cleaned

"controlled environments" and "underground access tunnels"

And people laughed at me when I said we all should just stay in our basements and if we DID come out it would need to be inside plastic hamster balls.

Just relaying the message the local news is giving us from the NCAA. Channels 6.8.13 and 59 all used the same language telling us the NCAA acknowledges it is not a true Bubble. The local news also talked about tunnels along with the skywalks. I have been fortunate to have used the tunnels from the hotels to the convention center and then to field level at Lucas Oil with a few of the activities we have provided medical coverage for over the years. Not too hard to isolate and avoid each other down there under the city.

"The NCAA said it will establish a "controlled environment" and a coronavirus testing program for players, coaches and staff, along with administrators and officials. As part of the plan, the Indiana Convention Center will become a massive practice facility, with teams and officials housed in nearby hotels — and using skywalks to reach the convention center."

I agree. Nobody needs freedom of choice or fulfillment in life. That's so 2019. Silly things like jobs and entertainment for mental and emotional health, pfft. Players with only one timeframe to compete at what will be the pinnacle of their careers for 99%, overrated. Government has this. They're from the government and they're here to help. Please stop with the freedoms and wants and desires stuff.

So this adjunct university professor in the article is gospel on this? I think not.

And by the way, did some comments get edited out of this thread?

NIU has shut down its program for the next 10 days, postponing three more games. That's a total of five since last Tuesday.

And the state of Michigan has closed down the entire UM athletics program, putting everybody in quarantine for 14 days. Seems they have the mutant strain of covid that is highly contagious.
