Since the first time I saw McDay on the court he's been my favorite of the Ohio freshmen. But, there's something about him that's been haunting my mind. He reminds me in his style of play, his facial expressions, his manner of carrying himself, etc., of a Bobcat of yore. Problem is, I can't remember exactly who that player is. It's one of those things that's somewhere in the back of my mind, but I can't quite pull it up into full into consciousness. The player I'm thinking of was somewhere in the 1962-1974 period. Any other long-time Ohio fan have any idea who it is that McDay might be reminding me of? Thanks!

Not that old but he plays a style of basketball that was and perhaps still is very prevalent in Akron where I grew up. SBH remembers one such guy - Rossevelt Rushin.

Aside from his quickness, intelligence, energy and ability to score, he reminds me of Bobcatsquared at Grover or on the outdoor court behind McCracken back in the day.

That's the nicest thing you've ever said about me . . . or after a second, closer look . . . maybe not.

Bump!

My Man looking better and better!

Still looking for help in figuring out who he reminds me of. Every time he comes on the court my brain goes into flashback mode. But, I’m still not coming up with a name.

He reminds me of Lunden McDay, plays hard, high motor kid who’s figured the intricacies out, has a nose for the ball. Knows his role and can score given opportunity. Shot is a little flat, but solid from the line and his arc will come.

He’s no one but himself.

16 points, all after intermission, were huge.

Biggest play, perhaps, from McDay came with Ohio up 6 and just under a minute left. Whittington, I think, lost control of the ball just feet in front of the Kent basket and McDay went to the floor to gain possession for Ohio. Proved to be what has been a typical play from the freshman.

+1

He understands from day 1 what the speed of the game is. Face it, any other freshmen with his season scoring average does not play the minutes he does. But it’s all the other things he brings to the table. His defense is very good, outstanding positioning, doesn’t do stupid stuff with the ball, plays within a system. Takes an ass ripping when needed and keeps playing. Kid has “it”.

One more special play by McDay came with about 5 minutes left when he followed his own missed shot from the foul line, got the offensive rebound, got fouled and made both foul shots. Plays hard with cerebral qualities for a frosh.

Here is my favorite McDay play, it’s every play as he rarely gives up scores, straight line drive layups and the kid, as BSquare says, knows where to be. Every play gets that effort! Comes from a winning program and has a winning attitude, hasn’t started since his ankle sprain and miss at BG, but never pouted, saulked or moped, just went and played the game. That shit will be contagious! (As long as Mike Pence doesn’t pray that virus away).

Agree with all the positive McDay posts. I saw him play in high school a number of times, and I'm not surprised at his play as a freshman for the Bobcats. Even when he was a junior at SVSM, I think could have contributed to a Div I college team. Now he just keeps getting better and better. He got solid coaching in HS. Glad Saul recruited him, and now the Boals staff is doing a great job developing him. He will be all-MAC before its over.

Just asking this question so we could throw all of our opinions out here. Is McDay the best defender in the conference?

We also so the Jr/Sr Mychal Green and not the freshman Mychal Green. Kind of unfair comparison there.

Best Bobcat defender in last 40 years was Eddie Hicks.

Hey, you've scored on me at AMS Gym just a few weeks ago. Probably forgotten that already! ;-)

Seriously, I think I might have remembered who he reminds me of. It's way, way back. I think it maybe Mike Haley, of the Elite 8 team in 1964. Here's a link that has a few, rather poorly preserved, photos of Mike playing against Kentucky. He totally dominated the much taller Cotton Nash, the UK All-American center. Mike dropped off on many plays to double team Nash, and stole the ball away from him while he was in the motion of his hook shot. He was a very active defender and had a tremendous jumping ability. He is still one of my all-time favorite Bobcat players. McDay is in good company!
