Interesting when you consider that Carter did not have to. Does this mean they think he is not good enough to play right away?

How about you don't be a jerk?

Agreed, Carter came to Ohio to attend school and play ball. He played ball and got his degree. He fulfilled his obligation to OHIO Basketball, then chose others pastures to graze in.

+2

I can't believe anyone is dragging a kid who parlayed a four-year scholarship into fully paid undergrad (and likely) grad degrees. He had the smarts and the talent to do it, and I wish him well.

I'll go out on a limb and conjecture that he may even be smart enough not to pursue a pro career overseas and go straight into his chosen field when his college career is over.

I think players should be free agents every year, just like coaches. A solution to that? How about paying them to stick around. That's what everyone else on the planet gets for work.

That's one point where I disagree. Do players go to college to get an education or just to play ball? If they want to play ball and get paid, there's the G league or overseas leagues. Why waste a scholarship on player who has no use of a college education (for free). They already get more freebies than most with a full academic scholarship.

Let's take it a step further. How about a trade deadline mid-season? Say, Oct. 15 for football and Dec. 31 for basketball?

Ohio has a need at the point guard position so maybe Boals can trade for Toledo's backup point guard before New Year's Eve. We can offer them a backup wing player and one of our available scholarships for next year.

Doesn't this assume that universities are offering scholarships for the education despite the fact that all evidence suggests otherwise?

Universities offer athletic scholarships (and pay coaches more than any other employees in the case of revenue sports) because they've done a cost benefit analysis and know the basketball/football programs return the value to make it worth while.

If they didn't believe that, all schools would be D3 schools.

Does anyone here know exactly how football and basketball scholarships work.

From what I've read,a scholarship has to be "renewed" every year.

Does that mean a school can decide not to renew any player's scholarship and
give it to someone else,or are there "conditions" to allow that ?

If you paid them and they had a contract, theoretically you could trade them. Any student at any time can transfer to any other school. Only in athletics can this not occur. How about this scenario? I'm a walk on for the Bobcats and pay my own way. Next year I transfer to WVU, also as a walk on. Must I sit out a year?

All contracts are 1 year renewable, however you’ve got to look long and hard to find one that was not honored or medically taken off the books (kid keeps the schools). These scholarships are also at full cost, meaning an extra pork chop off the books. Not to mention, if these kids live off campus, nthey are still getting a check for the rack rate at inflated dorm rates, which allows them to pocket cash. Then if the athlete qualifies for any federal grants, they get the full value in cash. If the student receives any NCAA clothing allowance money, they get that as well. If there is any per diet involved, kids can pocketbthat as well from trips.

This was years ago.

I was a walk on when I played soccer for Ohio.
We only had 1 scholarship,so we were pretty much all walk ons.

When I transferred to FDU ,I wanted to play soccer there.
I was told that, even though I transferred for academics,if I was on Ohio's roster, walk on or not,I had to sit for a year.

The way the timing of my transfer worked out,I would have only been able to
play 1 season of soccer.
But was able to wrestle for 2 seasons.

It seems like, for you, every thread is about this topic, or the concept of coaches being paid to much. It's as if you're reading every thread to come in with "pay the players", or to tell the market what coaches should or shouldn't be paid.

That's called having a hard on for something, which in this case I do. If it's correct that even a walk on that pays their own way doesn't have the freedom to transfer and keep playing is preposterous and hypocritical when you see the freedom coaches have and their enormous compensation. Some speak of the "free market", but you're forgetting the labor part of the equation. I guess a late night at Swanky's prevented some of you from making your 8am econ class the next morning.

If this condition last for more than 4 hours you may want to consult your physician.

Coaches aren't free agents every year.

They are. They might be under contract, but there is a buyout clause. They either pay it or get their new school to pay it. They coach and don’t sit out a year.
