I'll be there for my first visit to Value City Arena. I'm hoping for better results than the last time these teams met in 2004, when the Buckeyes squeaked out a 107-37 victory in the Convo. That was the year Lynn Bria decided to give 'em 40 minutes of hell, with a full-time full court press, a continual fast break offense, and a hockey-style five man line change substitution pattern. It was 40 minutes of hell for Bobcat fans. I've never seen a clock count down so slowly.

The team signed one recruit. Madi Mace out of Parkersburg. 5-10 guard who passed 1,000 career points last year. She is actually graduating next month and will join the team in January. I don't think I've ever heard of a basketball recruit doing that. Will she even play in any games for her high school this year? Will she even have a scholarship in January? We're full if you include the Wisconsin transfer. Would she even be eligible to play in games come January?

Interesting, her clock would start immediately from the day she enrolls and joins the team, this is like the opposite of grey shirting. Interesting.

She is one heck of a player, I am sure Coach Cuzzons is not thrilled.

Bolden says Maddie "will join the team this season," so it appears she could theoretically play this season. Highly unlikely, tho, IMO.

Right, I'm guessing this would be the equivalent of her redshirt year.

I posted your questions on the RebKell women's basketball board, and received one response, from an international poster:

Joe Foss wrote:
Ohio signed Madi Mace, who will graduate high school this semester, and enroll at Ohio in January. A poster on the Ohio board wants to know if she would be eligible either to receive a scholarship or to play in NCAA games this season once she enrolls. Would the result change if she plays in high school games this year?

awhom111 replied:
Fully allowed, but of course it does count as a year of eligibility and some people don't want to use that on half a season. Some players who enroll early redshirt the half season so they have four full to play. A few players from Australia/New Zealand have done it since the school year follows the calendar year there.

Thanks for that. Still, we don't currently have an unused scholarship, so it would suggest she may be preferred walk on and then upgraded to scholarship once Burke and Bezelak are no longer on the roster.

There might be a scholly available, depending on Hunter Rogan's status. She was a walk-on last season, and I haven't seen anything about her being put on scholarship this season. There are 15 on the roster, but if she's still a walk-on, only 14 are on scholarship.

Is BTN+ the only way to watch this game from home? It's $14.95 for a one-month subscription.

Looks like Jeff Boals has already posted "Great road win for The Ohio University Bobcats! OHIO". And yes, the "T" was capitalized. I guess if there was ever any doubt by anyone about where his loyalties lie they now know. ; )

my thoughts, having been there:

A. So glad so many Ohio fans were there. A few hundred behind the bench, many more throughout the arena. My section, 127 lower bowl, was half and half.

B. Absolutely thrilled for Amani Burke, who returned to her hometown and really played well. May have played the whole 40 mins. Shooting wasn't the best in the first quarter, but she was a large part of our ability to build a second half lead. Led the team with 24. My buddy is a Buckeye. He said after the game he thought she'd start if she played for Ohio State.

C. Erica Johnson certainly made things...interesting. Watched her fail to get an in bounds pass completed TWICE in the first quarter. Tossed up an off balance trey at the start of the 2nd that earned her a quick trip to the bench. The second half she got into a groove and played much better. Really pounded the boards.

D. Thought I was gonna have a heart attack in the final 4 minutes. Built up the lead, then lost our composure. Rushing up 3 pointers. Turning the ball over, and OSU taking advantage and tying it up at 68. Give the girls credit. This is a veteran team. They got it back together and closed it out.

E. A word about Gabby Burris. She gets the hustle and heart award, because it appears to me she is playing on knees worse that Joe Namath's. I know she's busting her behind and I'd wager her knees don't feel good right now. Love to see her on a set of good wheels.

F. I've never been an admirer of OSU Coach McDuff. He does less with more talent than any college coach I've seen. 3 top 50 recruits, one of them Top 10. And still this is not a very good team. Won't take anything away from Bobcat win, I love kicking Brutus's ass in hoops, baseball, tidley-winks, whatever. But I'd be very surprised, based on what I saw today, to see OSU at .500 come March. Great size advantage against us, but I thought we held our own with them on the boards. And their shooting was simply awful.

G. This win, the first against OSU, makes my weekend!

I hope OState’s coach improves at least enough for them to keep him. If not, their next coach might have been on the Ohio bench tonight.

I'm sure she's had higher point totals, but I thought this was the best game of Amani Burke's career. When her team came out with the jitters and was fumbling the ball away and missing rims, she kept them afloat on both ends. She really took on the role of the senior leader today.

I think that if there were lines on women's regular season games that Ohio probably would have been favored in their building. It isn't a shocking upset win at any rate. Ohio was slightly better last year and returned most of the minutes with key players also coming off injury or transfer redshirt.
