Coming off a losing record, losing our two best players to transfer and a whole new coaching staff. Seems like common sense. Does anyone have a good reason we should be picked higher? Not saying we can't finish higher, but why on earth would be be picked higher?

TWO best players?

Yeah...Maybe 2 highest scorers...but no, not 2 best players. Definitely best player though. I'll give you that.

Yeah, I understand calling TK our second best would meet with some resistance, and I can't make that strong an argument against you. No doubt his turnovers came in bunches sometimes and were frustrating, but he was simply asked to do so much more than he should have because no on on the team could shoot for shi+ for like 2/3 of the season. It's hard to pile up assists when no one puts the ball in the hoop. I'm excited for the future with Preston and the new guards coming in, but I think TK will be missed.

I don't think that changes anything about the fact that there is no good reason to pick us higher than 6th. It's hardly disrespect; it's just logic.

He wasn't asked to do it, it was just his style. Saul is to blame for allowing him to do it for two years. And don't think the shooting percentages weren't directly related to his running the offense. Shooting percentages went up as a direct result of Jason Preston getting more time running the offense. Used correctly and held accountable I think Kirk can be very effective but running an offense, especially with a roster that can't thrive without ball movement is not his calling.

Remember that Lindy's and Athlon are the two bottom of the barrel preseason publications, though I wouldn't be surprised to see others pick Ohio 6th as well.

Street and Smith's isn't any better. BobcatAttack fave Elton Alexander did the MAC preview, picking us last in the division. When discussing newcomers didn't even mention that we have the Ohio Gatorade Player of the Year, Mr. Roderick. Sheesh!

The only preseason publication worth its salt is Blue Ribbon Basketball Yearbook. Staff takes time to interview the head coach or assistant at EVERY D-1 program. Hundreds of pages of small print. No pictures, no ads, just tons of info. You can only buy it online.

Elton is very uneven in his work on the MAC in Street and Smith's. Last year, he was high on VanderPlas as a newcomer and he ended up being freshman of the year. But sometimes he's guilty of gaffes like overlooking the Gatorade Player of the Year.

I am also surprised that Ogbanda gets no play as an ACC transfer to OU. I know he didn't make a dent at Ga Tech but dude is 6-10 and has played minutes in the ACC for multiple years. I think he's silently the key to this season. We know we have proven commodities with Jordy and Preston at guard and BVP at the 4. We just need to fill in the gaps with a 3 and a 5. Ogbanda at the 5 with Roderick at the 3 with a bench full of hungry guys, sounds like fun.

Aren't we assuming Ogbanda is going to be the 5? I'm really interested to see how he plays as an ACC transfer. I agree that he's one key to a successful season.

Until proven healthy and back to "normal", I don't think we can consider Dartis a proven commodity as the 2. The good thing is, the wing looks to be an area of strength on this team, so he probably won't be relied upon to play heavy minutes early on.

I'm really interested to see the style of play, and how the rotation develops. It's a needed and refreshing clean slate for everyone, and I think this season will be fun as we watch a group develop together. I feel like there is a ton of talent here, albeit young talent.

There's a lot of "ifs" that if they come true could lead to Ohio having a very good season. If Dartis is close to him old self, if the freshmen can contribute in a pretty big way right away, if Ogbonda can be an impact player in the MAC, if Springs is ready to give some good minutes, if Preston can improve his shooting. It would take most of those things happening for Ohio to be near the top of the MAC. That's asking for a lot.

I don't think anyone (sane) is thinking Ohio can be towards the top of the MAC in 2019-20. That would be an unreal ask of Boals in his first year considering what he's inherited.

I think if they can be a .500 program this year ... that would be a giant, massive step in the right direction.

Realistically, I think they're looking at a 12-19 year ... 14-17 at best ... going into the MAC Tourney.

If they can earn a trip to Cleveland for MAC Q'finals ... I would consider that a huge success.

I think the pieces are there to be competitive ... but I'm not sure they're ready to compete for a MAC title or even a bye to Cleveland.

8-10 in the MAC would be nice. 5-8 or 6-7 in the non-conference would be impressive.

St. Bonnie - L
Heidelberg - W
Iona - L
Villanova - L
Baylor - L
Coastal/Utah - L
Tulane/Miss St/MTSU/Nova - L (unless it's MTSU ... maybe a chance?)
Detroit - W/L
Rio Grande - W
Tenn Tech - W
Purdue - L
Morehead - W/L
Campbell - W

I think Morehead and Detroit are swing games where they could win or lose. I think there are 2 guarantees (non-D1s) and two should-be-winnable games with Tech and Campbell.

Reading bshott's post, I agree - hopefully no one is expecting a top 5 in the MAC year. That said, if all the stars align, it could be possible. I would be pleased with .500 or better, and I think 9-9 in the MAC will be attainable. I think 7-8 wins in November and December is achievable as well. That's not my expectation though, that's my hope. Something like 18-13 would be a great start to the Boals era. 15-16, or 16-15 is more along the lines of what I think will happen.

I'm personally happy if, by the time February rolls around:
*everyone is still mostly healthy
*this group has a solid group of 9 giving quality minutes and playing hard
*frosh/sophs are showing notable improvement
*and the team as a whole are fun to watch play.

By March, my biggest wish is that Jordan Dartis has played the whole year without major issues, and he got to have a complete and good senior year.

If Dartis is the old Dartis, I’m a lot higher on this team than most seem to be. I’m guessing.500 or better.

I agree with your assessment. This probably will be a losing season. .500 would be very good. But I think there are a lot of people with unrealistic expectations, maybe not that Ohio will win the MAC, but there seem to be some who are expressing a feeling that Ohio will be in the top half of the MAC, which seems unlikely to me this year.

I would be happy with a 7-9 conference record. I expect 5, maybe 6 wins.

I think that if we get out of the basement it will have more to do with the East being worse than last year than Ohio being better. But this is a young team that has to rebuild this year for brighter things in 2020-21.

I just want Jordy to go off this year. Let it fly, young man.
