No, but odds are that the real Jeff McKinney will +1 it! ;-)

Seriously, I'm glad that Saul's found a head coaching job. Hope he does very well there.

Sounds like a landing spot with a good history and better fan support than most of the MAC attendance wise. Those recruiting trips are going to get a lot tougher though. I hope he thrives there and wish him much success.

I'll be interested to see, if he has success, how long he stays. Will it be a last stop for him or will it serve as a stepping stone to jump back up to a higher profile job?

It was either this, assistant job or sit out a year. This is right up Saul's alley. He'll do well recruiting the type of players he likes to a D2 school. Best of luck Saul...bring home some "W's" to the good folks of Aberdeen.

Just watched the whole press conference, and no kidding the first thing out of the AD’s mouth was “it’s a great day to be a wolf”, which is a lot like something I’ve heard before locally. Anyway, Saul was his personable self and sounded ready to go. He did say that he’s looking forward to his kids graduating high school in Aberdeen, sounds familiar too. Looks a place with great tradition and support,

There are good reasons our former coach is liked by so many.

Go Saul.

Good for Saiul.

He never did anything here that would make me, or anyone else, root against him. He's a good man and deserves happiness.

Happy he landed. He will make a difference at Northern, no doubt.

I am sure there will be some on this board that will report in on how well Saul's team is doing as we go through the BB Season.
I'll be interested to see how he does.
Being this is a D2 job he took a major pay cut, I would guess at least $300k.
Good luck Saul

Nobody despises to lose more than I do. That's got me into trouble over the years, but it also made a man of mediocre ability into a pretty good coach. Woody Hayes

Wow - Great news for Saul

The Wow more due the fact that just last night I had this weird dream where I was somewhere and sitting next to Saul, I began talking to him about his future, he was very upset per the OHIO experience but looking forward to new opportunities...Wow

Coach Phillips has found his way into a most fortuitous situation and I am sure we are all happy for him. Northern State leads the nation in Division II attendance. Having done my fair share of coaching and scouting in northern Ohio for high school basketball, I can tell you that when someone decides to stay and not move on they can be king in that town. Some of those guys are legends and Coach Phillips could be treated in the same way. Recruiting in the MAC is harder than one might think; you have to compete against many conferences. Coach Phillips is very familiar with the area and won't have that kind of intense recruiting competition. Best of luck to him and his family!

Most likely. But if he is making even low six figures that will go a long way in Aberdeen, SD along with what he pocketed while at Ohio.

I saw the info graphic that Northern State made to promote him as new coach. It was quite heavy on his accolades at NDSU with very few Ohio highlights. It made me a little sad things didn't work out since it reminded me that he came to Athens with a strong resume and a promising future. Obviously, if he had mirrored similar success in Athens like he did in Fargo, we would likely be having a different conversation about him right now.

Glad he has landed on his feet and Northern State Men's Basketball has a new fan in Cincinnati.

My statement has nothing to do with the quality of recruits, only with the remoteness of Aberdeen.

In some ways, D-II is even dirtier than D-I. Hope he doesn't get swallowed up.

Any guesses on salary? Isn't the lowest paid coach in MAC making like $320,000? My guess is Saul is making somewhere between $175,000-$225,000.

On one hand, yes you want a good job that’s not a dumpster fire. On the other the hand, I think I saw that this team had won like 62 games the last two seasons and finished runner up national DII champs if I’m not mistaken. That’s almost too good and other than winning it all, there’s nowhere to go but down.

they have also led Div. ll in attendance the past 11 years. averaged over 3,700 last year. And from the photos they (unlike Ohio) actually count butts in seats. Not much else to do in Aberdeen in the winter, but still impressive.

I'd like to think they'll do just fine in a small college town on that number. They didn't impress me as people who really worried about that sort of thing first and foremost.

And the town has an 18 hole golf course plus a nine hole track. Fantastic!

In my previous post, I mentioned how happy we all must be that Coach Phillips is back to an area in which he's familiar and and how successful Northern State has been. I also made mention that my experience in coaching has been that if you stay in a small town you could become like a king. Yet, Chicken George reminds us of the other possibility; Northern has been playing like gangbusters and with the arrival of a former Division I coach they must be expecting even bigger things. I hope of the two examples the former and not the latter is true. I would hate to see Coach Phillips up against impossible odds. Whatever the case, he will making far more than most of us and doing it in the Dakotas where the cost of living is pretty low.
