ISU expected to make their decision tonight. I have a hunch it will be Saul.

I have friend who is a Vandal. He says Idaho State is kind of like the Miami of the West, speaking in terms of degrees of suckyness.

I saw somewhere Idaho State has an acceptance rate of 100% so if you thought Western Kentucky was an academic weakling with their 93% acceptance rate...and as much as I don't like Fiami, their accaptance rate of 65% (and a very good graduation rate of 79%) is rather selective compared to Idaho State. I also saw that Idaho State had a graduation rate of 30% which is particularly bad.

While I'm glad Saul was not retained because of his habit of wasting schollies on scrub level non-D1 players, he deserves something better than Idaho State. Even if it is as an assistant for less money but at a better place.

After reading the article, based on records only, I would hire Looney. What a record for him albeit at lower levels.

I think after a setback in coaching and the ego hit there must be after being let go, the natural inclination is to want to build something from the ground up where expectations are low to start.

My crazy theory: A bunch of high profile coaches have the inclination, too. But none of them are going to ever give up the security and the money to do it. But I bet a bunch of great coaches, if money was taken out of the equation, daydream about taking over a tiny, crappy program and building something underneath the radar.

It's why so many coaches admire Frank Solich. He actually lived out that secret coaching fantasy of going to the wilderness and without the scrutiny or the pressures built a machine that hums along that buys him complete freedom and loyalty from the university.

Getting fired actually frees up a coach to do that. That's my theory, at least.

Could be. Jerry Stackhouse turned down a couple of NBA head coaching interviews to accept the challenge of fixing the Bryce Drew train-wreck dumpster-fire horrific disaster in Nashville. And while Vandy is not a historically crappy program, 20 losses in a row are 20 losses in a row.

Damn...was hoping he'd get it. We knew his next head coaching job would be several steps below the MAC. Thought this would be a perfect fit for SaulBall. Are there anymore D-1 coaching jobs available? As I said several months ago, he most likely will have to go the Larry Hunter route. Take a D-1 assistant job first and then resurface at a school like Idaho State or Western Carolina a few years down the road. The last five years on his resume won't wow many athletic directors.

Disappointing I was pulling for Saul. Can understand Idaho State thinking though. Looney’s resume really supports getting him getting a shot at a D1 job. Truly hope something else materializes for Saul.

True, and he was the only candidate without West Coast recruiting ties. He probably had the most experience but the other guys seemed to have more suitable resumes.

I admit that I was not a Saul fan from day 1 of his hire.
We all are evaluated by performance and his head coaching resume lacks good results at his last stint, Ohio.
Additionally he has no real recruiting expertise in any one area of the country.
As someone else mentioned on this site his best option, if he wants to stay in D1 coaching would be to take an assistant position with a P5 conference like Larry did. But then again Larry was around a lot longer as a head coach and formed relationships with other head coaches like Herb Senden who snapped him up to join North Carolina State.
The longer he goes without catching on someplace tells me he really does not have many connections and is therefor not well known.
I only wish him the best and that he can follow his dream.

I don't understand the continual need to bury this man. He didn't succeed in Ohio, but won't be the end of his career. Him not getting a job one month after parting ways with us doesn't mean anything. He has ties to Tim Miles and Bo Ryan, among others. He has two Coach of the Year awards from a respected conference and two conference titles with an NCAA win and an overall winning record. He'll bounce back. Yeesh.

TOS was fun to poke at because he didn’t want to be here. Christian because he claimed it was a a final stop just two years before bolting. Saul wanted to be a Bobcat for a long time.

Jason Kemp just got a job at William and Mary. Sounds like a nice job.

House sold, so why stay? I’m sure there are places closer to family to hang and seek work.
