Jason Snarkley could really learn a thing or two from this student writer. Extremely well written that summed up the Saul era perfectly and why he's no longer here.

I'm assuming you do NOT have a degree in Journalism. Rather, just another snarky and uninformed comment? THINK before you post such drivel.

BSJ 1983. Please teach me.

Snarkley and Saul have had a Donald Trump-Kim Jong Un thing going for a couple of years now. Only difference is the haircuts.

So you have a degree. Not sure I can teach you if you have such a narrow focus. A good journalist looks at the bigger picture. That's all for now ... Hope you have a job and are gainfully employed.

Same to you as SBH. Clearly you do NOT have a BSJ degree. Then again with your constant negativity I'm not surprised. But thanks for the laugh.

If he's not graduating this spring or this summer, I don't foresee Jason Carter transferring, because it doesn't compute mathematically. Having already sat out a season as a medical redshirt, does it make sense to go somewhere else and have to sit out another season, probably graduate during that time, then play a season or two as a grad eligible? He'd be a sixth-year student if he does it that way. It seems to me the better option is to stay here and play for Ohio, graduate, then decide whether to play as a grad eligible here or somewhere else as a fifth-year student.

Perhaps JC is getting a jump on doing his due diligence for a grad transfer after completing one more season at OHIO.

I couldn't agree more that a "good journalist" takes a broader view. That's exactly where Mr. Snarkley has fallen short.

Shouldn't that "broader picture" have included a mention of the repeated misses on the recruiting trail? Does Saul Phillips not carry any responsibility for signing multiple kids who simply don't have the skills or athleticism to compete at the D1 level? If you'd like, I can recount my conversations with a respected area high school coach who was amazed/alarmed that the Bobcats had signed AJ Garreri and Mason McMurray in successive recruiting classes.

Shouldn't that bigger picture have included mention of the disaster he allowed to happen in the locker room in Year One, when a couple of toxic characters ran off our best recruit?

Shouldn't it have included the staff's total inability to manage point guards, including Jaaron Simmons, whom he allowed to play hero ball to the overall detriment of the team? Then skipped town because he didn't respect his coach?

And shouldn't it have included the precipitous declines in attendance and financial contributions to the program? Does the coach not bear any responsibility for those problems?

No, your "good journalist" - who had become a friend of the coach - chose to ignore all. Why? Because our AD wouldn't return his calls.

So, let's just look at the dollars and cents. If Schaus has renewed Saul, we all know there would have been a MAJOR hit in ticket sales and related revenue next year. Additionally, he would have been forced to sign at least a two-year renewal, which would have involved close to $1.4 million for salaries, etc. In short, he would have been tripling down on a staff that has been beset by problems for the past five years. No responsible AD makes that decision. Somehow this calculus didn't make it into Snarkley's story. Perhaps it was cut for space.

I'll try to be brief, as I'm sure you've got to get the Scioto Farm Report put to bed this morning.

No, your "good journalist" - who had become close personal friends with the coach - chose to ignore all. Why? Because our AD wouldn't return his calls.

So, let's just look at the dollars and cents. If Schaus has renewed Saul, we all know there would have been a MAJOR hit in ticket sales and related revenue next year. Additionally, he would have been forced to sign at least a two-year renewal, which, all in, would have involved close to $1.4 million for salaries, etc. In short, he would have been tripling down on a staff that has been beset by problems for the past five years. No responsible AD makes that decision. Somehow this calculus didn't make it into Snarkley's story. Perhaps it was cut for space.

He may have a degree from the school of journalism, but I can attest that he rarely attended classes. More like an honorary degree.

Are you employed in a journalism carer? I'll guess not ..

Opinion pieces do NOT necessarily have to do with all the aspects of his coaching career at Ohio.

I did note you FAILED to mention the injuries (Campbell, Carter, Dartis, Gollon, ...). Nice omission. Great that you wanna cherry pick what's relevant. Shows a bias in a supposed journalist. Not surprised though.

PS Year one was inherited. Need I say more? A decent journalist would have known this. Again, you fail.

Simmons didn't respect Saul? LOL. Actually Simmons felt after obtaining his degree he could play at a higher level. More failure by you. Opinions are NOT facts. Will Scripps rescind your degree?

Decline in attendance. It's nationwide. Do your homework. Failure #3 .. or #4 .. or more.

How do you KNOW we'd have a MAJOR hit in ticket sales? That statement is irresponsible journalism at best. At worst .. well, we won't even go there. Without injuries Saul wins 20 4 of his 5 years here IMO. See, I use "IMO" instead you you stating things as facts which are in fact not FACTS.

The decline of journalism continues ....

Hope I have been able to "teach you". Angry unintelligible replies should be thought out before posting. No competent journalist would write a story like your post and take it to his/her editor.

Angry, unintelligible? Hmm.

You willfully ignore the fact that I was pointing out issues Mr. Snarkley had failed to address in his paean to Saul. He led with injuries, has mentioned injuries in every story written this year, and has quoted Saul extensively about the impact of injuries. Like Saul and folks like you, Arkley's favorite conjunction is "But..."

So, I figured we could agree that the injuries bugaboo had been appropriately litigated. Except. Had Saul over the past five years developed a bench that was ever deeper than 7-8 players, perhaps we'd have logged a few more wins. So there's that. And heck, if his teams could shoot 60% from the stripe, we'd have had a couple more this year alone.

As to him "inheriting" a troubled locker room, I say B.S. He was the coach. He needed to take charge of those guys or invite them to focus on other opportunities. He didn't. Did his willingness to ignore that crap help boost his record in Year One? God, no. That team was absolutely unwatchable. All it did was drive off his most talented recruit.

I find it laughable that you criticize my "speculation" that ticket revenues would decline next year, yet in the same breath claim Saul would have won 20 games in two additional seasons had he not lost players due to injury. As to the former, I suggest you call some folks down at the Ohio Bobcat Club and ask how many complaints they've received from season ticket holders this year. It was a bloodbath. In my case, I went from Bobcat Black seats in Saul Year One to Gold seats in years three and four to GA this year. That ain't demographics, pal; it was a 30-plus year season ticket holder voting with his wallet. And I wasn't alone.

As to the Jaaron Simmons saga, ask around and you'll find that JS had his coach on a retractable leash. Were you not watching when he singlehandedly blew games at Kent and in the MAC Tourney by hoisting ridiculous shots (or no shot at all) at critical moments? Did you notice how Jordan Dartis essentially disappeared in his sophomore season? Reason? Jaaron froze him out of the offense.

Simmons told folks he didn't think he was getting the instruction he needed to reach the next level. Ironically, when Jaaron got to Ann Arbor, John Beilein discovered that there had been no coaching whatsoever over the previous two seasons, and sat him down.

I'm done arguing with you. Yes, I am employed. Gainfully. Retiring at the end of the year. I suggest you head back to your newsroom and remind Herb Tarlek and Les Nessman that turkeys can't fly. Except, in your world, the turkey who made $2.5 mil in Athens over the past five years.

The thread should stop here, the winner by TKO is SBH. Itís over.

Jason's free to pursue whatever he thinks is best for him obviously. Coaching changes are a big shake up and I understand him wanting to consider other options. I just think it would be a really really bad idea for him to actually leave.

Hey, I'm not him - and my opinion doesn't matter, but it just seems like an emotional decision instead of a reasoned one.

In the short term, he's our best player and I think would continue to flourish under Coach Boals, but it is what it is. If he stays we'll build around him. If he goes we'll recruit to replace him.

Get on the Boals Bus!

Too bad. On the plus side, does anyone know how many scholarships Xavier had remaining? They are one of the main competitors for Ben Roderick. If this takes them out of the running for him, it might be a decent long term trade-off.

This.

On one hand I can't blame him. He's free to go play wherever he wants/thinks is best.

On the other hand I think this isn't a great look for the kid - because it certainly wasn't a playing time/build around me/get opportunities decision. This was obviously strictly personality driven. Which means either he refused to play for somebody other than Saul (boo hoo) or he absolutely hated Boals (seems doubtful, but possible I guess).

Either way - on to the next. Recruit em up Jeff!

Can't blame Carter at all for this. His situation changed with the coaches and he made his move. Hope he continues to grow as a player and as a person at Xavier.

An easy question to answer 20 years ago. Or even 10 years ago. In 2019? Not so easy with makeup of rosters so fluid this time of the year. I believe the X team Ohio faced this season was made up 2 or 3 transfers who played immediately.

Wonder if JC will be eligible to play in 19-20 or will have to sit out a year. Also wondering if a bet I made a couple of years ago with a couple of basketball fans here in Licking County that JC will one day be MAC player of the year will be held against me or if it's now null and void.
