After reading through the various threads about coach Phillips, there seems to be general agreement that he is a very nice person.

Its also apparent to me that he deeply loves his wife and family.

Given that,I wonder if having to deal with his wife's health issues may have taken a toll on both his recruiting and coaching.

I know that if my wife had to go through what his wife did, concentrating on my job would be a challenge.

Plus, having had family members go through similar situations, even when your loved one is "cancer free",its still always in the back of your mind.

This doesn't mean that Saul's results warrant him staying.
I just wonder if this could explain,at least in part, his not living up to expectations and duplicating his past coaching success?

It's a great point. One would have to believe it's always partly on their minds. I can't speak to his situation, but I can say for me, things like this definitely affect me when they come around.

I've thought about that and everything else he's had to deal with (injuries, players leaving, etc.) and have come to the conclusion it's just not meant to be. I can't imagine a scenario where going through what his family went through DIDN'T have an effect.

Very thought provoking post rpbobcat. I have seen this happen at the high school coaching level, one guy completely fell apart and had to temporarily step aside, another guy said coaching helped him escape and he became laser focused. We all deal with these sad events differently.

I am just going to through this out there as well. Those of us who have played or coached and have seen something like this, also have seen teams go in different directions. Teams who have players that show real leadership rally around the coach and sharpen their focus and and skill set, while those who don't have team leadership, sputter, spiral, and often self implode.

Nobody likes to see a good guy lose their job. Saul and his staff are neighbors and friends to many supporters in the Athens community. I for one hope his players play well the last few weeks of the season.

I think you have a very valid point here. I just saw today where she is going to be undergoing surgery again for some health issues. She didn't go into detail and this was this first I had heard of any flare ups for her. I pray that all goes well for her, Saul, the kids, and the rest of the family. I've been a fan of Saul's since he came to Ohio and the play of the team has really pained me as it has all of Bobcat Nation. In the grand scheme of things, however, it's just a game. What appears to be potentially going on "behind the scenes" in the Phillips household could be more important than any MACC title.

He definitely has a lot on his plate and I wish him well in the future. Once he and his wife overcome this cancer in Jesus name, I hope that he can develop more as a coach and find a great landing spot. Coaching wise, he is dead set on not playing zone, that is fine if you have superior athletes, it is dead wrong if you don’t because athletic teams will use the dribble drive to get your bigs in foul trouble, superior bigs will kill us on the boards. Recruiting wise, he recruits pieces, you have to recruits stars and let the pieces fall where they may. We have about four guys who have no business being on a MAC contending team.

Nobody despises to lose more than I do. That's got me into trouble over the years, but it also made a man of mediocre ability into a pretty good coach. Woody Hayes

I will 100% tell you finding out your wife has CANCER will get 100% of your time and attention. Nicole beat hers as did my wife, ( different types). Praise the Lord.

I couldn't agree more. Without going into personal detail, I can assure you that the importance of Ohio Basketball's success, and MAC banners and the like have come into perspective for me since the calendar flipped over to 2019. I know for a fact that my tenor on here from a year ago reflects that. I'd hope it does even since the start of the current season. As sports obsessed as I can be, at the end of the day, it's my fun, and it's just a game, or a race.

I hope all goes well and the Phillips family get 40-50 more years together as a family.

Finding the right priorities in life can be terrible for a career. It's something I don't think most of us consider in a lot of situations in sports and in real life. I used to question a couple co-workers who just seemed to do enough to get by and didn't kill themselves and go above and beyond. And then I found out their stories, what they now prioritized and it made a lot more sense. Then I emulated it for a few years as a refresh to life. I wouldn't trade it for the world. Getting stuck in that mode for years and years isn't probably ideal, but for a least a bit of time after an event like this, just prioritizing something else is probably a good move.

I have no idea if any of this pertains to Saul Phillips. I don't see any evidence he hasn't put every ounce of his energy into Bobcat basketball. This discussion just brought this point to my mind.

Form Nicole's Facebook account and Twitter. It is for reconstruction surgery. No talk of recurrence of her breast cancer.
