I have no issue with the Ball family trying to make money off their skills and talent. Everyone else is making money except the players.

My concern is that, after all the legal maneuvering to make sure this kid keeps his college eligibility, the money the "family" (I believe its primarily dad) is making off this kid, finds its way back to him.

My issue with the Ball family is with LaVar, not with his kids. And....

Not that I want to go down this road again, but the players are compensated. Many of them are able to get a 4-year bachelors degree and graduate with no student loans. Some are able to get a portion of, or all of, a masters degree as well. Cincinnati has a young man who finished his bachelors one semester early, and is now enrolled in master's level courses.

Doesn't LaMelo drive a Lambo? I think something is getting back to him.

Like has already been said, I don't have a problem with the Ball brothers. I think, just from the outside looking in, it looks like Lavar tried to (and succeeded in) profit heavily off of his sons talents. Talents that he didn't really have. Granted he was a college athlete, he didn't really "make it" financially as a pro athlete. All three had a free education awaiting them at UCLA and pops managed to torpedo that (with help from Liangelo's sticky fingers) for the two youngest sons. I watched a video on Melo a few days ago that said, and maybe this has since changed, he only holds one college D1 offer now from a super low level school in Alabama, I think. Again, from the outside looking in, it looks like Lavar essentially stole the high school and college experience from two of his sons.

No comment on the Ball family...

As for SPIRE, they've come a long way. The first time I attended a soccer tournament there(then known as GaREAT,) I was mystified that someone would shell out tens of millions of dollars to build such a massive sports complex. It is located in a remote area that is best known for ice wine, snow squalls and a decent state park. To me it looked to be a white elephant that would file for bankruptcy within its first few years. The place has thrived. The MAC, Big East and Atlantic Ten all host conference events there as well as several colleges, OSHAA and even the PIAA. Their academies are gaining traction and now with the Ball circus in place, I expect more to come. If you are ever trucking up I-90 towards Erie, take 15-20 minutes to check out the facilities.

Ball show in Buffalo last weekend. Set up shop before the game in the lobby. SPIRE won and provided entertainment for the masses...

Hargrave moved their record to 21-1 .

Take one of these tournaments, for example. High school kids are playing and somebody is making money off of these kids. How much, I don't know. These are not pickup games at the local Y. It's as if you're in the concert promotion business but you don't pay the band.

So, we should be paying the elite high school basketball players as well??? Why not pay the performer in the school play too, after all there is admission being charged for admission. Someone is making money!

So, you believe that an operation like Spire and IMG Academy are amateur enterprises?

+1

I was a star on the debate team in high school. I never made a penny for all my hard work. It's very unfair. If dumb-ass athletes get paid, so should those doing more academically inclined endeavors to advance the name of institution. My debate partner and I (the late Henry Wieman, M.D.) had a winning record for dear olde Athens High. Yet nobody slipped us extra money. I never had a $20.00 hand-shake from a debate booster. I think I'm going to go back and demand "back pay" for my efforts.

[For those whose sarcasm meters are defective, or not working in cold weather: Some of the above paragraph is not to be taken literally.]

I guess you skipped your business courses. Was anyone making money from your debates? Was someone, like a coach, say Mike Krzyzewski of Duke, making 10m a year?

Lavar saw someone taping the game and said that they have to pay $3500 to tape his son, Lavar is quite the character, he is the most unconventional publicist lol. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.sbnation.com/platform/am...

Nobody despises to lose more than I do. That's got me into trouble over the years, but it also made a man of mediocre ability into a pretty good coach. Woody Hayes

My debate coach was earning a salary from the school system. She was a long-time faculty member, and was probably on the higher end of the salary scale, yet I, her charge and practically chattel slave, got not one penny. Ah the unfairness of it all! I can hardly write these lines because my hands and fingers are shaking with rage as I recall this utter injustice.

That’s pretty funny! I wouldn’t need to have my third glass of wine to appreciate your wit. I know everyone likes to watch the games and doesn’t like change. When Hess and Snyder were coaching they were paid like professors. They even had to teach a class. The old “student athlete” model that Walter Byars coined in the 50’s to avoid the burdens of athletes being employees and all that entails for the university’s is outmoded. It may work for Div 2 and lower Div 1, maybe even the MAC, but not the Power 5. It will change.

Glad you like my humor. It's not universally appreciated around here. I agree with you that change is coming, but I don't think either of us know the direction of that change. It may be in a drastically different direction than you are visualizing. History is full of surprises! Stay tuned.

The teaching a class thing was a thing until this century, and was a bad move IMO.

Spire is playing at Flyin to the Hoops this weekend. A friend just texted me a pic of Lavar Ball in the house.

Speaking of Flyin to the Hoop, the Sunday Dayton Daily News noted that coaches from many schools were there including Clemson, Ohio and Valparaiso.

I went for a couple games last night including Garfield Heights. Sonny Jr. starts as a freshman and Meechie (Juby's son) starts as a sophomore. Meechie had 26 in an incredible comeback win over Wayne.

Spire played today and here was the line to get in the morning. It's been sold out for weeks.

A bad move that they were teaching or a bad move that they are not currently teaching?

For things to change the players have to have an alternative place to play. Europe, D League or some upstart league.

Sonny Johnson is part of the problem with everything wrong with basketball and the YouTube era. Need proof? Watch any videos that pop up when you search “Julian Newman NEO.” Johnson runs that joke of a camp and encourages the behavior.
