Have to admit, that gave me a good laugh. Unlike Q, I actually have a clue thanks to some well-connected friends.

Whether or not you think there is a "deep state" inside our government is up for debate. But there is no question such an element does exist at Ohio - and they don't care for athletics one bit.

Few understand how much McDavis did to shield athletics from the naysayers. Any on-field/court success in the last decade is pretty much directly the result of his efforts.

How the two Presidents handle budgetary issues and declining revenues definitely seem to be at opposite ends of the spectrum.

Totally agree, the canaries in the coal mine are going off right now for Ohio's next 5-10 years. Facilities are old, budget is drying up, administration is against athletics, and right now the programs are not doing any further favors to raise funds (cough, winning enough to create excitement).

Heck, I got my packet from OBC making it sound like they're close to 700K short on a lot of stuff that needs funding. Strap in folks.....

Coincide all this with a university administration that is quietly working to deemphasize athletics (now that McDavis is gone), and you have a recipe for lean years in our future. Unfortunate, but true.

THAT said, it's pretty obvious catfan28 is right in the statement I quoted. If Schaus and his staff, and the OU administration were truly serious about winning and being at the top of the MAC, they would have either extended the contract this summer (not saying at this point that they should have), or fired this staff at the end of the season. The "lame duck" season is a bad way to operate, and not really conducive to winning or improving the program. For that reason, some of my frustration is directed toward Schaus and/or the administration.

I thought about this all off season--how nice it would be to have the budget to make bolder moves vs. being forced to stay the course another year when the inevitable seems obvious in your gut. First, I do admire JS for not extending, while everyone I knew thought internally they had and simply not announced it. Let's me know he's serious about results vs just adding years after a so-so season to "make recruiting easier." At the same time, if SP is not the guy, we now have 7 Freshman on the roster and 4 Sophomores of the 16 players listed on the roster--that's 11/16th of the team. And we've already signed another guy for next year. If SP isn't the answer, then such a huge influx of new guys is really bad timing for everyone and may take a new staff a bit long to turn over the roster, though the rate of transfers these days may make it easier than it would've in the past. This hire could potentially affect nearly a decade of the program when you consider his time here and the time it's going to take to untangle this situation and get the caliber of players we need in the door as well as they guys we don't need out.

100% agree on McDavis.

At first I laughed at your first line above. But then I thought, isn't that exactly what QAnon says -- he's well connected. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. :)

Just so I'm clear, in this case, "deep state" is defined as employees and faculty members of Ohio University that believe academics should be prioritized above athletics, correct?

Yeah, they exist. As they should. It's a super rational stance to take. We pay our basketball and football coaches more than we pay our President. In basketball, we're a mid-tier team in a mid-tier conference with no cohesive strategy in place to change that. In football, we haven't won a conference championship and aren't eligible for a national championship of any kind.

I think rational people can ask whether that money's well spent.

It's much more than that, though. It's an irrational hatred (and I don't use that word lightly) of athletics and its mission/place at OU.

These individuals believe that athletics either should not exist or should be de-funded to Division III levels.

And you'd be surprised how many folks of this mindset are now in the upper-level administration on campus. With a President that mostly abdicates power to subordinates (and, quite frankly, lacks any long-term vision) that has a real impact.

I don't know any OU faculty members, so I'll take your word on their irrational hatred. Though, I suspect there's plenty of rationality at the core of it. Maybe their hatred's since spiraled into something irrational, but I can see the argument in favor of drastic cuts to the athletics budget. I don't necessarily agree with all of them, but I think it's a stretch to write them off as irrational given where Ohio sits in the hierarchy of intercollegiate athletics.

To be clear, I'm talking about staff/administrators primarily - not faculty. Many faculty also wish athletics would go away...but they lack decision-making authority to do anything about it.

Administrators, on the other hand, have the ability to make decisions that hurt athletics. It's death by a thousand cuts. Units like admissions, finance, legal, OUPD, parking, human resources, etc. all can have a substantial impact on the day-to-day of Ohio Athletics.

In the past, athletics could typically go to McDavis and get things turned in their favor. Or, perhaps more importantly, units like those above wouldn't make decisions designed to harm athletics because they knew McDavis was watching. Now, there is no one in the upper administration that looks out for athletics. That is a dangerous spot to be in for any unit (at a university or in the corporate world).
