I'll be very interested to see how he does in the ACC.

Wait. Wasn't he just a PT player for Buffalo? And now he's in the ACC?

Yes. https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/ikenna-smart...

Part-time player, I guess, is all relative.

He was good enough to be a starter the past 3 years (74 starts in 93 games) but not good enough in that he didn't play major minutes (14 min. per game) over that period.

Akron will be bringing in 3 JUCOs, an international player (7 footer from Senegal), and the transfer from Dayton next year.

https://www.ohio.com/akron/sports/university-of-akron/uni...

This is adding to the fact that they had already signed another JUCO, LePear Toles, into the fray. They currently have not signed a single freshmen for the class of 2018.

I still am holding to the assumption that both Groce and Akron want him to move on after this year. I don't think Akron wants to have to pay his entire salary. I would think that they like Illinois paying the big chunk of his salary.

hmm . . . Illinois just has to pay the difference between his Akron salary and his Illinois salary. This is no extra strain on Akron's budget. When the Illinois contract is up, Akron won't have to pay a dime more, unless they give him a raise. This is just what happened when Frank came here in football. Nebraska had to pay the different between our salary and their contract with Frank. Once the contract time was up, Frank no longer got any money from Nebraska, but he still got his previously negotiated salary with OHIO. OHIO didn't have to match anything that Nebraska was paying.

From what I have read, Akron pays Coach Groce 350k in years one and two, while he is getting Illinois money, then they are on the hook for 650k per year in years 3,4,5,and 6. That gives him the same annual salary as Coach Phillips over the course of his contract.

That may be the way Akron wrote the contract, but in year three he will not be making the kind of total money he would be in year one and two with the Illinois money. In other words, Arkon will not be paying him at the salary he had at Illinois, just a competitive MAC-level salary. This actually seems to me a really smart way for Akron to do it, because they save a lot of money in years one and two, while JG gets the highest salary in the MAC. Then when the Illinois money is gone they have to pony up for a competitive MAC salary. I don't see how you can read into this that Akron wants him gone after two years.

Why not? To me it seems that they structured the contract for him to hit a home run in year one or two and then move on to greener pastures. Plus, with the way he is recruiting, looks to me like he is thinking the same thing. I think they are on the same page.

That's actually not that much of a stretch. Hope they catch lightning in the bottle then move on if it doesn't work out. Especially with how bad that school's debt problem is.

You may be right, but that's not the way I interpreted that contract at all. It just looks to me like Akron was playing it smart. I know about their overall financial problems, but I don't expect they'll have any problem paying JG's full contract in year three. I don't see JG as wanting to get another P5 as soon as possible. He may want a little stability in his life at this point. Time will tell.

On Sunday mornings WFAN has a show called The Sports Edge with Rick Wolff.

It goes into all kinds of topics on youth/college sports.

Yesterday's show was about choosing the right college.

He started out by talking about Freshman transfers.

The first thing he said was that over 40% of all D1 college Basketball players transfer after their Freshman year.

Apparently, there's now a whole cottage industry set up to help high scholl athletes chose the right college.

He interviewed the heat of "Perfect Placement" about this.

They talked about a number of things, including the difference between being recruited and playing.

They also talked about riding the bench in a big D1 program,or actual playing time at a smaller D1,or D2 or D3 school.

Its worth a listen :http://newyork.cbslocal.com/audio/rick-wolff /

The expectation would be that by year 3 JG will have performed at a level worthy of a nice raise and extension up to about 1 million or so. That is how Frank's deal with Ohio worked out. Started at a lower salary. Produced quickly and was renegotiated upward. The only time in sports where its a one year expectation is if its a middle reliever trade deadline pickup for a playoff run. Its not uncommon for managers in the pros to be fired after one year but when is the expectation 1 year? Larry Brown?
