Not on the VC list yet but reported on twitter per ESPN...

Pitt to grant releases to EIGHT players. They must have re-hired Stallings.

So Ryan Taylor is pulling a Jaaron. Evansville rescues him from what we can surmise was an awful experience at OU only to elevate him and watch him probably go to Iowa or a Big 10 team. Way to go Taylor. Glad you left.

Spoken like someone who has never actually played the game. Yeah, because basketball isn't a physical sport or anything....nope. You don't need strength to maintain positioning. To shake a defender to get open. For defense. For boxing out and rebounding. For grabbing/maintaining possession of the basketball. Nah.

In fact I can't think of any high-major D1 players or NBA guys who focus on their body and the weight room to become ripped and physical specimens at all.

I mean, they aren't offensive linemen.

I did play actually, coached at the high school level for a few years too. Of course strength is a factor, but Kevin Durant couldn't even bench press 185 once when he was at Texas. You think they had fans on their board saying not to recruit him because of it?

Can anyone tell me what DJ Cooper could bench press? He was pretty skinny, probably a waste of a scholarship too.

DJ Cooper’s job was not too bang and get rebounds. Maybe the kid is wiry strong, but at the high school level and you are 6’10, you normally average double figure rebounds. This kid may need a few years, who knows?

Nobody despises to lose more than I do. That's got me into trouble over the years, but it also made a man of mediocre ability into a pretty good coach. Woody Hayes

Well Evansville did just fire Ryan Taylor's head coach... So, this seems a litte different. But, damn, this really hurts the mid-majors who find and grow talent....

Not just find and grow but save. Taylor didn't like his first stop and I feel like Evansville was there for him. Jaaron didn't like Houston and his coach was fired so we were there for him. I saw Tariq Owens -- same thing. I'd rather have guys who truly love the Bobcats. That's why I wish we would have gotten Evan Bradds. Dude committed himself to Belmont and would have done the same for us.

I can't blame these kids when their coach was fired. Let me put it this way, if your boss who recruited for a job decided to leave 4-5 months later or got fired what would you do? Would you stick it out if you knew the place was going into the dumps? Just curious what your guys' thoughts are on this.

The grad transfer needs to end. It kills 75% of schools at the expense of the top 25%. Big schools should not be permitted to poach like this from the rest of us.

Bottom line: You transfer, you should sit a year. There has to be some "skin in the game" to make such a big decision. It is currently consequence-free transferring. Coaches have buy-outs. That's their deterrent. You have to have a deterrent for players too.

I agree that players should be allowed to transfer - that's fine. But it just can't be consequence-free. Allow them to still play for all 4 years, but they have to sit upon transferring.

I favor an alternative to Catfan's approach. But keep in mind it is highly unlikely the current system will change, because as Cat points out, it favors the big schools and that's usually all the NCAA cares about. The next time the NCAA does anything in big time sports to help the minor leagues like the MAC, let me know.

That said, the kids who help make all the money for the NCAA deserve some freedom. Therefore, I propose that every D-1 football or basketball player is allowed to transfer once, for any reason or no reason at all, with immediate eligibility at his next stop and an athletic scholarship. But that's it. If a kid wants to transfer again, he would be ineligible for an athletic scholarship and thus ineligible for any of the bennies of such, like training table at his new destination. In essence he would be a walkon. This would pretty much eliminate grad transfers, and also end rules that allow kids like Simmons to game the system and transfer twice. Hardship cases would be allowed, but they would be REAL hardships, not the phony stuff the NCAA now allows.

Under this system, Simmons and others like him would be immediately eligible to play, benefiting both him and the school. There'd be no redshirt year where he advances academically while saving a year of athletic eligibility for another potential transfer.

It's simple, effective, and it benefits all parties, so of course the NCAA would reject it out of hand.

This would be a total disaster for schools in the MAC and lower. Immediate eligibility? Our roster this season would be left with Sam Frayer and Antonio Bisutti. Say goodbye to mid-majors ever keeping a decent player.

I doubt it because there just aren't that many scholarships available (unless we're talking about Pittsburgh LOL). There's about 350 D-1 teams, maybe 80 or so are top tier. I don't think the top 2 players from each of the remaining 270 teams are all gonna leave for those schools--that's 6 players for each top tier team. Flipside, of course, is if transfers DO take a disproportionate number of scholies at big time schools, then some pretty good high school players who otherwise would have gone there might end up at the minor league schools instead.

Anyway, like I said, it ain't gonna happen.

List about to grow. 8 PITT players got their release’s and are now free agents. Whoever gets the PITT job will really be starting from scratch.

Akron will be without freshman PG Virshon Cotton next year as well. Scored 7 points to go with 2 assists a game while shooting 37% from 3. Seemed to improve as the season went on. I know they have a lot of transfers coming in, but I was surprised by this one.

Sounds like Coach gave him an honest evaluation and a choice. Not sure why you would give someone a B- in a tweet but ok..... assuming he is neither a communication nor an English major. I think the clearing of negativity in the locker room is an important part of culture change that happens when you sweep the dust out the door

Cotton's tweet includes thanking U of A "for giving me the best freshman year experience of my life"

How many freshman year experiences has he had in his life? one? two if you count high school?
