Had to laugh at the comment on 13. My wife is from Redtown up on the ridge. She was yelling me 13 was closed at Chauncey according to her FB friends. Says if anyone coming from there they would have to go out on those "roads you always get lost on". Woman is making fun of me. She can get all over SEO with a right at Sunday creek and a left at possum run but can't figure out how to get around in Indiana where the entire state is laid out like a sheet of graph paper.

Being a hilljack I can understand your wife's predicament exactly.  I can navigate well in hill country with winding roads and visual landmarks.  Usually the second time around in a particular area I'll have the landmarks and the lay of the land memorized well enough to know where I am and where I'm going, with only an occasional need to look at a map.  Put me down in a big flat city or countryside, and I'm lost without constantly looking at a map or using some kind of GPS.  Grid layouts are so damn boring and they all look alike.  How is one to know which is which?  Very confusing for us hill folk.  You flatlanders can have your geometrically symmetrical grids, I'll take an asymmetrical hillside anytime.  If you don't understand what I'm saying, just ask your wife, she'll be able to translate for you!  wink smiley

P.S.  My wife's a flatlander from the wastlelands of central Ohio, so I have the opposite problem.  She gets lost on hillly country roads but can navigate a grid with ease.

I am proud of our fan base (and still very ashamed of our students). I'd venture a guess it was the best crowd of a last place team in late-February in MAC history. Perspective...

Without looking it up, I believe Miami started 6 for 7 from 3...that was insane. Then they ended up 13 for 37. Seemed to me that our defense did well and forced them to jack up ill-advised 3s. Miami seems about as talented as they've been in several years.

Did anyone catch that Kirk was trying to foul when Miami had the ball with 10ish seconds left and down 2? I am fairly certain he thought we were up 3. He was bailed out by a Miami TO just before he committed his foul. He had a simialr slip-up against Buffalo.

Loved the way Gavin Block played, that is the way he needs to be. Mixing it up and picking his carefully selected spots for shooting.

Mike Laster has had a rough senior MAC season, no way to sugarcoat it. His mid-range touch isn't there and he just isn't making as many plays. He could flip the switch at any second and make us a dangerous draw.

Dartis & Kirk were great again. This team is better than a last place team...I am hoping we can finish strong and get to about 7-11.

I did not see the Doug Taylor put back slam highlight in that recap video. Please tell me someone has that video somewhere? To the naked eye, it was the best play I've seen in the convo in years.

Not quite a Gary Trent nor even a Don Hilt dunk, but it was a very good one!

DT had a wide grin after that slam that lasted more than one trip up and down the court. A well-deserved wide grin.

Ohio will not be a dangerous draw this season.

At least you didn't state that Ohio could be the team no one wants to play in the tourney. And for that, thank you.

That's why I said to the naked eye...The highlight was disappointing. I think the most impressive part was the angle and timing of it. When watching live, it looked like not only was he not going to be able to put it back, he wasn't going to be able to even get the rebound...then in the blink of an eye he is slamming it down.

A few observations after attending the Miami game:

I can't drink like I used to....but is was fun trying
Beer sold at the Convo - great idea, but the selection sucked.
I know the team is crippled by injuries, but they seem to lack consistency in BB IQ
God I wish coach had more energy. I'm from the Nee years, so I'm spoiled. But damn, his energy was contagious.
The student section sucks. Embarrassing. So disappointing.
Crazy Cats dominated the section.
Such good friends.
Talked to a number of students uptown - complete apathy re: OU Sports. I know the BB team is not good, but the administration could do so much more in creating interest and excitement across the board.
State Street potholes - cab driver said the company that fixes them is closed for the winter, Closed for the winter - only in Athens.
Athens never gets old. Court Street never gets old. I guess I'm getting old since someone called me Dad/Pops. All laughed.
Miami Sucks.

Apathy is contagious, but so is engagement.

I was in town for a well-attended football game on a beautiful Saturday last year. Afterwards, I was walking uptown behind an undergrad couple. She was expressing amazement at the fact that a football game seemed to be kind of a big deal based on the crowd, traffic and tailgating. He agreed. She said, “We should really go to a game this year,” as if it was the first time she’d ever thought of it. He agreed. Baby steps, I suppose.

My point is that you can control a lot of factors that go into whether a student attends something or not. You can’t turn back the clock to before cellphones, cable and the internet, but you can make the experience fun. It took years, but football Saturdays in Athens feel like a true event now. Conversely, for years, students and others made the Convo a special atmosphere. Combine taking that support for granted with a bad team, stale atmosphere and onerous security and you have what you’re seeing this year.

The “good old days” may never return but some more wins and a commitment to improving the gameday experience could go a long way to restoring things.

Agree - we also need to use and leverage the technology of today and engage students on their own turf via geofencing and other applications that can make an experience more personal, immediate, and interconnecting.

My response would be I almost guarantee those 2 have not yet went and never will go to a football game. When push comes to shove, they won't go.

I place very little blame of the crappy student involvement on the athletic department. Not saying they should just stop trying, but right now it is hopeless. And honestly if we were 10-4 instead of 4-10, I don't think it would be really any different.

I disagree. Like any fans, students want to see a fun team and wins. This piece is lamenting the lack of community support in Buffalo, but correctly points out that their student section is regularly filled now that they win a lot of games.

I saw him play and he was a keeper. He looked a lot like some of the boxers of that day more than a BB player.

I thought of his build as more like that of football player. If he had played offensive center in the oblong-ball sport for OHIO, he could have opened up holes in the OL the you could drive a Mac truck through all by himself. XUTM would have been a real hit with fans! ;-) His shoulders were so very broad and he had such great muscle strength. He is one of my all-time favorite OHIO basketball players. It was sad to hear of his death a year or so ago. Of that Elite eight starting five, I believe only three are still alive -- Jackson, Gill and Storey.

I disagree too and can we PLEASE stop using "have went." It makes us seem to be the uneducated party school louts that some claim we are. Anyway, the game day experience is pathetic. We've listed the reasons many times. Heck, I posted today that I have a ticket for tonight's game because we're going to see the Birdland All Stars at Mem Aud and not one person wanted the ticket. Without much effort or money, going to the Convo could be an event again.
