Saw that team in person both in the Convo and in Anderson Arena. They were good, with two future NBA players -- Nate the Great, and Howard Komives. I also won a free haircut with my barber when I bet him that BG would beat Loyola, a real powerhouse at the time and a NCAA Champion in that era.

The legend continues, whether or not the Convo existed.

I’ll never forget that time Spindle Graves and I played Scuttle at The Ping.

The best team in the MAC ever or in recent memory doesn't lose to the last place team in the league. Ever.

Alexander does some strange reporting sometimes. But, if Buffalo ends the regular season with one MAC loss, and then wins the MAC tourney, that would be the best MAC season I've seen. And, if they win some NCAA tourney games they'll have some legit bragging rights in terms of being among the best MAC teams. No? Of course, like Jack says about Tiger, they still gotta do it.

They are feasting on a really bad group of teams. They have played a total of 8 games against teams in the KenPom top 150. They are 3-5 in those 8 games. Their best win is #119. They have now played 12 straight games against teams ranked above 150 with 6 of them above 200 (they lost to two of those +200 teams). Essentially, they are what their OOC record says they are which is an 8-5 team with zero quality wins. This is a historically bad year for the MAC with 10 of the 12 teams ranked 166 or worse. To put this Buffalo team in the conversation for best ever MAC team is idiocy.

Van, it's a historically mediocre year for the MAC, not bad. MAC overall is at 12 or 13 in Sagain and 11 in RPI. What are they in KenPom?

We are 14th in KenPom. It is the worst the conference has been since 2014 when we were also 14th. (15th in 2013)

The weird part is that most teams in the West are having above average seasons. The difference between a good MAC season and where we are now is us, Akron, and Kent.

Akron is really bad right now, Kent is typically Kent but with Sendy at the helm the opposition always has a chase to win and we are who we think we are. CMU is bad and Miami is on the rise but not there yet. EMu is kind of bad as well compared to most years and Western just keeps predictably chugging along with the same kids and results as always. Kenpom has it about right this year.

14th out of 32 Div I conferences. Not good, but not terrible either. We kinda figured this would be a down year for the MAC before the season started.

Not to pick on you Jeff but there seems to be a consensus here and a propogation of where the MAC is and this being a down year. Using KenPom metrics as a stable datum (the most stable I have found over the time basketballstate, espn and others with writers in and out and different folks making assessments whereas KP is a one man consistency) I wanted to share what KP has had the MAC ranked.

2005 we won the Autobid and the conference was ranked 10 up from 14 the year before. In 09 it dropped to 19th while Groce and Holtmann has us last in the East while we would have been first in the West at 7-9. THe next year 2010 the MAC "rose" to 16th and we had the Autobid. 2011 we were back to 19th and 2012 we had the Autobid as the league again ascended to 14. 2013 we won the first regular season title in a while as the league went to 15th on KP.

Ensuing years were 14, 11 , 12, 13 and the current " Down " year of 14. That may give a long term look at the league which has been around 14 way more than the 11, 12 or 13 we have seen recently. Those are actually the anomalies and this years 14 ranking more the norm with much lower rankings the left side of the bell curve. This is a "mormal" year for the MAC strength and ranking since KP started in 2002.

The idea that this Buffalo team may be the best in MAC history is extremely laughable.

The problem is there aren't any good teams. Nobody is epically bad like in recent years but at least 8 of the 12 teams are below mediocre. Two are mediocre and two are above average. The league just lost so much talent from last year. Teams like Ball State and Western should be better than they are though and maybe they will put it together down the stretch.

What is encouraging, however, is that very few seniors are among MAC leaders in scoring, rebounding, assists, shooting %s, etc. . . Wilder (WMU) and Fletcher (UT) to name two. Most of the league's best players are scheduled to return next year.

The key is for MAC members to avoid having their top talent transfer out as well as improve the incoming talent level.

Encouraging? I'd say definitely.

Two seniors on the all-MAC first team. None on the second team, one on the third team and none among the honorable mentions = 3 players among the top 20 players are seniors. (Two of those 3 players - Fletcher and Clark - are one-year MAC players). I can't recall the last time the number of seniors on the all-MAC teams was so few.

Based on one great game? No. Buffalo is really good, and deserves its accolades. They have a shot at winning the next game. All that said, EA's column was still stupid. MAC teams have made the Elite Eight. MAC teams used to play in a much better overall league. 2018 Buffalo is awesome and I hope they keep winning, but I'm not crowning them all-time anything at this point.
