On Jan. 18 the Board of Trustees will consider a resolution to proceed with installation of this $1.98 million project.

A huge waste of money. If the Trustees approve this, they are truly fiscally irresponsible.

What is a scoreboard for the Convo supposed to cost? Is there a donor or partial donor covering some of the cost?
The cost has to include the scoreboard , labor to install and any facility modifications needed.

Why would one think it is a waste of money?

With the steep seating I can imagine a substantial scoreboard and video screen.

It's a waste because we don't need it. Here's the link to the agenda. Go down to capital improvements. They will discuss this and other things in committee at 1:45 on Thursday in Walter Hall.

Doesn't seem too out of place when you see 2.5m for restroom upgrades to a single building. (hand dryer segway here....)

I thought that Pepsi was paying for this scoreboard.

I guess the negative responses don't realize that there are no replacement parts for the existing boards(placed in 1967/68). They have problems every time they use the existing boards. To replace the existing boards in the original locations the costs will be very similar to the overhead scoreboard.

Come on people to replace 50 year old things, like your home there would be large expenses. Same as the Convo. I really think this facility is starting to show wear and tear and that goes for scoreboards.

I absolutely think a new scoreboard is necessary. Those ones we have now are absolutely horrific.

I don't know about Pepsi, but at the Caravan stop in Cincinnati we were told a scoreboard in the Convo would happen after the scoreboard at Peden.

The scoreboards now, while they still serve their purpose, are dated. The AD has gotten as much out of them as they can. I think people will be pleasantly surprised if/when a new scoreboard is installed how much of a difference it will make in the atmosphere.

Define for me atmosphere! If you say it will change the looks of the convo is atmosphere, maybe I'll buy it. If you say it will make more people attend games and be more vocal, then I have a very large bet for you.

Of course it won't make people louder or more people attend games. And yes I was talking about the look and feel of the place.

My question for you people against getting it: Why? Why shouldn't the Convo have a new scoreboard? Other than the fact that the current ones turn on, change the score when needed and the clock sometimes works.

My wife and I were in Athens for the Alabama A&M game.
The scoreboards were O.K.
A more modern, "glitzier" videoboard may help with the "atmosphere" and even woo some recruits.

I was also under the impression that a new video board was to be "sponsored".

Personally,I think they need to do something about the concourses around the convo.

The place has somewhat of a "sterile" feel.

Good perspective that is well worth considering Panda. At the very least, the scoreboards need to be brought into the 21st century. If I were running the budget, I'd be looking into comparisons of two boards in the upper deck on both sides, to the cost of a center hung board. Of course then some here might get upset about how we can't remove any of those seats because of two days a year.

I'm with those who say it's needed. It's just like your home built in the 1960's - it needs to be brought into modern times. While the scoreboard is important, it's not the only thing needed. So let's talk about hand dryers, as mcbin suggested! ;)

That's like saying why shouldn't I have a new (fill in the blank) when the one I have works just fine. As for the improved video - yes the picture may look better but the content is what matters and the content right now isn't very good. And while I'm on "69s" lawn kick, who the heck was running the audio at the last game? In addition to extremely bad music, their time was absolutely horrible. As the colors were being presented, they were still playing pregame warm up music. Then everytime the cheerleaders took the floor to perform a routine, some equally bad pregame warm up music was played. It's going to take way more than a shiny new scoreboard to improve the game experience in the Convo.

Time to head to Kroger to buy some milk, there's a storm a coming. :)

With no hesitation, I agree with this statement. The game-day operations, and general game-day experience really need improvement. I've said it at least 3-4 times in the last year here, and mentioned it in my last two end of year surveys: The need to get a group of people to other, non-MAC venues to witness how they run their game-day's would be huge. Visit Xavier, UC, UD, OSU, and Butler. See how they run what they do - all the way from parking, greeting people at the door, concessions, audio/video. I haven't been to Cintas, but Butler, UC, and UD have it DOWN. There is absolutely no way Ohio can't take some ideas from what they're doing and apply it in The Convo, Bobcat style.

Maybe this has been done - maybe not. If it hasn't, it sure seems to me that this would be a great project for the Sports Admin program to take on, no?

Agree on the music, Alan. I have one suggestion somewhat related; when they ask folks to text what song they want why don’t they have one choice aimed at the Old Zone? I’ve never heard of sny of the three choices. How about one choice from the “classic rock” era?

While I've never seen them in person, I think the Convo could benefit from scoreboard installations similar to what was done at Ball State. They seem to adequately address those sitting at all levels in the arena (from floor seats to upper bowl) giving each an unobstructed view of the video board. Hopefully they'll be able to use the new boards to provide updated player stats, scores of other games of interest, etc. I, too, was under the impression that IMG was going to assist on the installation costs of the new video boards.

How is this a waste of money? It adds another dimension to the Convo and people have been calling for it on this site for years. It might not completely fix the game day experience, but it's a step in the right direction. The only other ways we can really improve it is by updating the concourse/concessions, which still cost money.... or by saving the Ozone which is a complicated problem. Best way to do that is to start winning, we have been average for years.

If we want to be a major program in basketball who makes the tourney every year, this is one of the things we have to do. If you want us to continue to be a solid mid major who makes the tourney every 5 years or so then don't do it. I want my school to be the best it can be in sports so I'll chose the former.

You do realize that the current scoreboards are NOT the original scoreboards, right? The current boards were installed in this century, and is the 3rd set of boards in the Convo's history.

Does anyone ever pay attention? These scoreboards were purchased and installed about 15 years ago. That puts them in the 21st Century.
