There's a nice article in today's (10/05) The Post about Walter Luckett.

Still remember when the Sports Illustrated issue, with him on the cover came out.

Picked up a mint condition copy of that issue (November 27, 1972) at an antique mall here in Athens. The guy who subscribed lived in Concord, CA. Says "Ohio U. Freshman Walter Luckett" on the cover. The Bobcat painted on the floor had red eyes and a read mouth. The price was only $10.

Alan, what value do you place on your copy? Maybe we can negotiate.

It'd be very, vey intersting to see what SI's circulation numbers were in 1972. And it would be even more interesting, but impossible to know, how many of those issues still exist today. That's the type of cover someone from anywhere else in the country would probably pitch. I have no earthly idea the survival rate of a random, non-historic cover magazine that's now 45 years old. It'd be amazing to try to figure out the number though.

I grew up in Connecticut back in the day so I knew all about him. He was a 3-time! 1st team high school All American at Kolbe High in Bridgeport and the National High School Player of the Year his senior year.

I had just graduated from Mizzou and was working in St. Louis when I heard Mizzou was to open their new fieldhouse in Columbia, the Hearnes Center. They were to open against Ohio and Luckett was on the cover of SI. I had to be there. My connections were Connecticut and Mizzou, not Ohio at that time, I'm probably one of very few Bobcats who saw that game. Fortunately I did get to see him again in the Convo his last year when I arrived. Over 25 ppg that year. “Bucket by Luckett”.

Recall little about that 1st game. Mizzou won, Luckett didn’t start but he got in early, hit a few nice baseline corner jumpers, but wasn’t particularly noticeable.

Got to chat with him at the Convo on his returns here. Social, pleasant, knowledgeable guy.

“Stick it in the bucket”

p.s. there’s a bunch of the Luckett SI magazines on ebay for $10 and less.

This copy is in truly mint condition with the "advertising/response cards" still sewn into the magazine. Because I have an additional connection to Walter whom I've never met but who scored 50 in a game in Connecticut against an Abbot Tech grad who scored 25 and was supposed to come to OU in 1973 but broke his elbow and ended up at Muskingum because Jim Snyder called Jim Burson about the kid, the negotiations will be interesting.

Yeah, that's me, Brucecuth. I was very surprised to see that pix in the story. And for the record, I'M NOT A MIDGET!!! I'm 5-7 on my best day, while Walt still is 6-4.

Nice pick up, BuddyLee. That was the 'Cat back then. I, for one, was elated when the Attack Cat came into existence.

I remember listening to the game from my residence in Davis Hall and the Ohio announcers made several references to the Missouri fans razzing Walt with hot dogs, some even thrown on the court, allegedly pertaining to his quote in the Sports Illustrated feature that he would get 18 to 21 points a game just standing around.

Interesting. I was curious about that and saw Wikipedia has a reference to it, saying his SI quote was that he would "drive those rascals wild" when referring to Mizzou. I didn't see that when I pulled out my copy of SI. Fake news from Wikipedia? Here's the quote I saw and it was not a reference to the Mizzou game , just a general one:

" I'll tell you this. I'm shooting it. I'll get 15 just hanging around but I'm shooting it".

So the hot dog bit makes sense. Also saw Luckett was 3 for 12 from the field ("hot dogging" it?) and Ohio lost 87-75.

A couple of us BA-ers got to sit by Luckett at the Bobcats' NCAA game in Providence a few years ago. Very nice guy. When I read it says he is 6-4, he seemed so much taller.

I echo SBH's comment. If you want one, get one on Ebay, shouldn't cost you more than 8/10$ including shipping.

Luckett brought a lot of excitement to town. Growing up in Athens during that time, everyone wanted to be Walter Luckett on the Morrison school playground.

It is interesting how many copies of that issue are still floating around.

I married a Connecticut girl. All the in-laws are huge UCONN fans. My father in law collects all things UCONN. He had a perfect mint condition copy in his basement. He always said it was something shady that got Walter to Athens. Took me a few years but I now have that copy in plastic and the cover photo in my office.

Mine's the whole magazine, too. Mounted right next to my May 18, 1970 SI magazine featuring my hero, Dave DeBusschere.

Nice. All I have from May of 1970 are old Beacon Journals about Kent State. Very confusing for a 9th grader.

What would it take to recruit a (5) star player like WL today ? I remember attending OU during his fist two years. Basketball was incredible / electric back then. Hoping all these recruits coming in this year and next are diamonds in the rough !
