Interesting article that tries to quantify impact of college basketball transfers over the last 6 years: https://heatcheckcbb.com/2017/07/01/college-basketballs-transfer-movement-by-the-numbers/
Some interesting facts:
- North Carolina is the only program to not lose a transfer over the last 6 years
- 29 teams have not added a transfer over the last 6 years (BG and WMU only MAC schools on that list)
- Of the 30 teams that have lost more than 20 players over the last 6 years, the only MAC school is NIU
- In terms of departures by conference, the Conference USA has had 216 players leave the league since 2012. The Ohio Valley is a distant second with 187 players, then comes the laundry list of power conferences. Just 39 players have transferred from the Ivy League, and 34 players have transferred from non-D-I programs to D-I programs.
- Nearly 60% of transfers, instead of joining other D-I teams, have left D-I basketball completely since the 2012 offseason.
- The author shows through regression analysis that the idea that college basketball players tend to transfer to better teams is almost entirely a myth.
