Same logic could be applied to the new academic center. Because doing it that way would have made sense. Don't get me wrong, I'm in favor of both projects. It just seems likely to me that adding some of the other things I mentioned that need done to these two projects could have killed 4 birds with two stones, and less dollars in the long run. Maybe I'm assuming too much. Never thought about the need for pilings but makes sense. Would there need to be an even stronger base there for a facility housing an ice rink? Would the overall weight much more significant than the existing structures in Ping? For some reason they didn't use piles, or extend the grade beams,for the outer walls. Over time the underlying soil,which is primarily clay,settled. That's why a couple of years ago they had to "shore up" Ping's outside walls. They have been looking for five years and have either received no offers or, more likely, no compelling ones. If I were a potential sponsor of either building, I'm not sure I'd want to make any investment right now. College sports are changing quickly and unpredictably and those changes are not likely to result in more exposure for the Ohios of the world. Last week a friend and I were in the Dayton area and happened to be driving by Wright State University. My friend commented about how their basketball arena was all lit up with green and white outside lights and he stated that something "must be happening there" tonight. Obviously, there was...the men's team had a home basketball game that evening and made it known to everyone traveling in the area that something was indeed happening there. I find it such a shame that we can't manage to improve our gameday lighting outside of The Convo. I would think it would be relatively easy to install some canned LED lighting either from the top of The Convo shining down or to mount it on "the forbidden" concrete slabs surrounding The Convo shining upward. At least those traveling in the area would have an idea that a game was happening and it would also provide some much needed lighting for those of us forced to walk the outer walkway of The Convo to the front entrance. Rant over...for now anyway.
