Pitino in hot water again as the scandal resurfaces. They may have to forfeit the title because of ineligible players. Always thought he was smarmy.

that's the thing... he HASN'T always been this way. This is quite a fall from Grace. Pitino was once the poster child for cleaning up a dirty program after taking over at Kentucky. I can only imagine his ego got the better of him through the years. I simply don't buy it that an assistant coach was supplying call girls and he had no idea.

And Bobby Knight is thinking "All I did was choke someone and I was demonized!"

Assuming Luvulle is a state school, if I'm a taxpayer in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, this clown has to go.

I am never sure it is that simple.

So what happens when "that nut from Athens" shows up at Ohio State saying "I am a taxpayer and....." ? Those huge athletic structures kind of seem insulated from that from what I see...

And therein lies the problem - in many "big time athletic" programs, the program has gotten too big to fail. It's amazing what normally rationale people will excuse in the name of "oh, but it's (fill in the school name)." I know lots of them and I'm sure that you do too who will often turn a blind eye to the transgressions of these behemoth sports programs.

the issue of providing escorts to recruits over the course of a few years is alarming. the fact some of the escorts and some of the recruits were underage is horrific.

I'm not a fan of either program in the commonwealth but I feel UL should have faced more severe penalties.

Let me touch my cheeks to see if they are wet with tears of either sympathy or empathy. Nope, they aren't. Pitino might have begun his career with good intentions, but the hypocrisy that has become big time college sports, ultimately, got the best of him. It seems as though success in the big leagues is often related to how close to the fire one is comfortable in being. In Pitino's case, he has been standing right in the middle of the fire for a few years now.

The University of Louisville has never cared much about graduation rates and such. Denny Crum was notorious for having low rates. The fact is that they are like a pro team for football and basketball in their city. They make a lot of money. In fact, the WSJ has touted their athletic program, men's basketball specifically,as the most valuable and profitable in the country. That has bought Eddie Munster a lot of chits.

Lets just imagine what would happen to the director and all his/her bosses of (insert name of any non athletic department) program if the assistant director or recruiter for that program was hosting recruiting parties for perspective students and paying for booze and hookers.

Pitino and the Athletic Director are lucky Americans see/hear/speak no evil when it comes to college athletics.

I'm surprised a parent of a recruit hasn't sued Louisville.

Keep in mind that OSU's athletic department is self-sustaining and doesn't take any money from either the academic side of the university or the students. That taxpayer probably has a stronger case to show up at the other state schools in Ohio who needed $160M in subsidies to fund money losing athletic departments.

It's already happened in Virginia where the taxpayers figuratively showed up (through the legislature) and put a cap on athletic subsidies.

▪Urban Meyer, head football coach, $4.61 million ( He actually makes more than this.)
▪Thad Matta, head men's basketball coach, $3.39 million
▪Raul Weiss, clinical professor/ cardiologist, $1.98 million
▪Eugene Smith, athletics director, $1.98 million
▪Kevin McGuff, head women's basketball coach, $1.19 million
▪Christopher Cullen, general counsel, $1.27 million
▪Michael Drake, president, $1.04 million

Top earners at OSU. See anything wrong with this picture?

Yes, I do see something wrong in the athletic arms race. Absolutely. Multi-million dollar coaching salaries, lavish locker rooms, academic "success centers" It's a system that's gone off the rails. But if you think Ohio isn't a willing participant, you're hopelessly naive. And I would argue that whatever the spending levels are, an AD that doesn't take subsidies is much more responsible than one siphoning off tens of millions of dollars from academics and students to stay afloat. Whatever OSU's flaws, that AD is not a drain on their university, which might be why they're able to pay an average full professor almost 30K more per year than Ohio.

You make a good point regarding OSU not taking any student funds. That doesn't give them a license to spend like drunken sailors on athletics, in my opinion. Their women's coach is making over 1M! That is surprising. I don't mind the student fee if you keep your costs reasonably in check. Athletics are part of the student experience. If you should be paying your coach 300k and you pay him 600k and fund it with student fees, that's not right.

If athletics are a business, then the OSU "student" athletes are underpaid.

Nebraska is now fully vested in the Big10 now (or after this year) and will receive $40 Million from the conference. Let that sink in for a minute.

They're still state universities, and the largest chunk of their funding outside of tuition dollars still comes from Ohio taxpayers (although OSU's research funding might be bigger than their state money). My point to the original post is to be careful for what you wish. If the Ohio taxpayers (via the legislature) do show up and start questioning athletic spending, they're going to start at the schools that have large subsidies not at the athletic department with the lavish buildings and high coaching salaries but which pays for itself.

NO, OSU athletics (and several others in the country), are private organizations in regards to funding. OSU Athletics take no public dollars from the University. Taxpayers have NO skin in the game with OSU athletic spending as tax dollars are not being spent in that self-funded model. If we want to complain about tax money being used, we could start at our own campus.

OSU's athletic department is certainly a part of the university, not some corporation on it's own to do as it pleases. You may think it is above all else, like the tail wagging the dog, because of the dollars it generates. I don't care if they pay Urban Meyer 20M a year. I just think the players are underpaid in an atmosphere like OSU and it's ilk. To get back to the origin of this thread, that's why stuff happens like it did at Louisville and Pitino. None of these schools would get a nickel from me based on their spending habits, no matter how much they make at the gate.

If OSU's Athletic Department is "independent",then I presume they have to pay rent to use facilities owned by the university as well as utilities or all other expenses.

Players everywhere are underpaid. OSU is no different than all the other BIG boys, they make a ton and they spend a ton.
