Not shocked. Sad and disappointed, but not shocked. The writing was on the wall once we knew he asked for his release. Declaring for the draft wasn't a big deal. He didn't hire an agent - nobody thought he'd actually get drafted. But in that situation where there's a 99.5% chance you're still in college next year - you don't ask for your release unless you're already gone.

Saul better be a heck of a lot better coach than I think he is - or we're in for a "fun" year.

Maybe those people claiming we needed to get an offensive minded P5 legit big instead of Mickle were right.

This is a case of a kid making the selfish decision. He's no NBA player. Period, End of Story. If Cooper wasn't, no way he is. What's he really going to gain at Michigan? Exposure argument is a farce. He's a fringe NBA player to begin with, who bailed on his team.

Long run, we're fine. It's just a let down feeling for fans right now.

It's a real problem for all mid majors. Grad transfers absolutely decimated Cleveland State 2 years ago, and hastened the departure of coach Gary Waters. I have not read quotes from Jaaron, but I wonder if knowing the MAC is and will be for the foreseeable future a 1 bid league had much to do with this. He can go to Michigan, finish 5th in the league or lower and play in March.

I hope this doesn't lead to other kids transferring, even though they'd have to sit a year. Maybe not now, but at some future point. When your leader bails, it has to cross your mind.

Saul is facing a real test now because of the leadership void. Also, I wonder now if you change your policy about accepting undergrad transfers, or you just now plan for the fact that you'll have one less year with the kid than you have in the past. If he doesn't grad transfer, well then it's a bonus.

I hate being a mid major, and I fear things are only gonna get worse for the MAC and similar conferences.

I also don't buy the exposure argument. Jaaron will never play in the NBA. From his two playing years at OU I got the impression that Jaaron was a fierce competitor but this year, once Tone went out, he seemed to change a bit in terms of his personality. I felt like he had to shoulder a TON of responsibility and at times looks tired and frustrated that he had to do everything. His buddy Kenny is gone so he doesn't have him. At Michigan Jaaron will average 9 points and 6 assists per game, win 25 games, play in front of huge crowds and play 25 minutes a game. Maybe he is relishing that. I don't hate him for leaving and I also will not put him in my OU basketball pantheon with Trent, DJ, Walt, Geno and Hunter. Those are guys who were 100 percent Bobcats. Jaaron was exciting and used us for 3 years for a degree and a Michigan jump. No hard feelings from me but I'm also not going to root for him at Michigan.

In terms of our team this year, I think we are still set up pretty good. Now it will all come down to Kirk and Butler and if they're ready for primetime. We know we have a shooter in Dartis. We have a glue guy in Block. We have a rising athlete in Laster. We have a bruiser in Doug. We have two bigs with potential in Vander Plas and Gareri. We have an unknown in Gollon and we have a potential Player of the Year in Carter. I still like a starting lineup of Dartis, Carter, Block, Kirk and perhaps Mickle with Laster, Doug and the freshmen off the bench. And...we have an extra scholly which I trust Saul has been prepared for. I'm hoping Jaaron didn't make this decision quickly.

This really stinks, but on the bright side the last two times we had a Freshman starting PG we made the NCAA tournament.

Love your optimism BigTilly....but even you have to admit....this will be tough to overcome. This is a punch straight to the stomach.

Hmmmm......whose been saying that??^^^^^^^^^^^
We just lost 15-18 points per game heading into next season and most likely the player of the year in the conference. Saul had to know 2 was a goner, which makes our recent add more puzzling.

How can you justify needing a big now when we just lost our best player who was a PG?

And people just crushed me on this board yesterday for saying the signing made no sense....before Simmons left!!! And Saul knew he was a goner.

Neither was I excited at the signing, simply based on articles/stats that were supplied along with the notion that I'd like to save those spots for an unexpected homerun hitter option (Offutt, Simmons types that may unexpectedly pop up). However, you got to think that if SP had a better option, he'd have taken them instead. I just gather he didn't and doesn't--so he grabbed somebody. Out of the 144 transfer options, you got to think he was in the bottom quartile of guys teams were targeting.

Speaking of new players/recruits--most coaches live & breath on every new recruiting class, but this is highlighted to the 100th degree this season for SP/OHIO. With so few impactful assets on the current roster, this recruiting class coming in for SP is probably going to be his OHIO career definer. It's make or break IMO. I mean, we're all guessing at starting rotations/subs and we're listing guys who are in high school and we've never seen play as many of the guys we're counting on. If this were MLB and trades were permitted, I think the only guy on our roster we'd say is untouchable is Carter, right? The rest are open competitions. Fortunately most on here feel great about the class coming in, so hopefully it will be the start of a good run.

here's the comment I was about to make before the news came in-

- Gary Trent was in Athens for 3 years and didn't earn his degree, but there's no denying he is viewed by the fans as a Bobcat through and through.

- Maurice Ndour was only in Athens for two years and earned his degree, he is also seen as a Bobcat, now and forever.

- but what about Jaaron? Simmons was in Athens for 3 years (like Trent), played for 2 seasons (like Ndour) and earned his degree (like Ndour) but because he didn't start here or finish here how do you think he will be viewed over time? 5 years from now will he be "former Bobcat Jaaron Simmons" or will he be "former Wolverine Jaaron Simmons"? How will you view him, how will the average fan view him, and how will Jaaron view himself?

Does anyone view Russell Wilson as a former NC State QB?

Folks from NC State absolutely do.

Arkley mentioned how this opens up a scholarship for Campbell, even though it's a long shot he gets his waiver.

Would you take losing Jaaron for getting Campbell back? I would probably say yes.

How is Jordan Dartis not untouchable in your eyes? His spot is 10000% safe.

I thought it was a little strange that he mentioned that in the article. Previously, he'd seemed pretty dull on the prospects of that actually happening. Maybe he still is, just doesn't seem like his style to throw stuff like that into articles out of nowhere.

I've seen crazier things happen.

Loyalty and trust are words that we require in education, that hasnt been reciprocated by this young adult. A common theme in education/America, not just college athletics. As a coach, an educator, sorry I cant just sign off on something like this because it is the norm and convenient.

Have to disagree. It's like changing jobs. He views this as a better opportunity. When people change jobs they are usually running from something or running to something. His quotes in the Messenger article seem pretty clear that he is running toward an opportunity. Isn't the whole concept of student athletes to graduate and prepare the student for the world of work? A chance at playing pro ball is a chance at working in a very lucrative environment. I had reps leave our company for a better offer and in almost every case, they made the right decision for their career and their family. As much as I hated to see them go, I couldn't begrudge someone the opportunity to better themselves.

I don't see Simmons leaving if Campbell was coming back. While I hate it and disagree with the move I can't begrudge him or hate him for leaving. My view would change if he were to bail on a teammate like Campbell in his situation. Maybe it doesn't make sense but just my thoughts.

JS is an impressive talent, but let's face it - Saul got burned on this. He let the kid do anything he wanted on the court, sometimes to the detriment of the rest of the team. Hero ball? Go at it, kid, I've got your back. Loyalty is a one-way street, I guess. Very disappointed, but I wish him well.

Care to question my sources now?

Trust me, I'm livid that I even heard this talk coming out of both, but at the same time I'm not shocked that this was going to go down, especially when I knew he was getting looks from Ann Arbor and Columbus.

I agree, Dartis is 100% safe. But if I found a slashing, athletic 2 guard that could create shots for himself and not be relegated to mostly spot up 3's (remember Jordy went quiet some late in the season when we didn't have TC to double and Dartis was crowded at the 3 pt line) I'd have to take a look. But yes, we've got so many holes I don't think he's got anything to worry about.

I'm sure SP didn't want it to turn out this way (Gollon/missed recruits, etc...) and I'm sure he tried to solve it, but the lack of backup PG the last 2 years is really going to burn us now. If DJ went down we always had a somewhat serviceable Stevie--JS has had nobody for 2 straight seasons--NOBODY!

This is pretty much where I'm at.

Also, somehow this is all Jim Christian's fault. I haven't figured out exactly how, but I know it is.

Well said. I totally agree. A lot of unfairness swirling around in college athletics these days.

When Campbell went down Saul gave the keys to the car to Simmons - and he responded. Without the injury Simmons doesn't have nearly the season and is not nearly as attractive as a grad transfer. That injury appears to have hurt us in more ways than expected.
