I am surprised that he has been there this long. I hate to say it , but Groce seems to be unable to win there for whatever reason. To be sure, he's had a lot of injuries, and a lot of character issues with his teams.

I don't doubt that he will land on his feet somewhere after his Illinois days are over which would seem to be after this year.

I wil always appreciate what he did in his years here, and wish him
well in his future endeavors.

They definitely have some problems this year, but at the very least, that staff deserves credit for last season given the spot they were in with injuries. The writer feels like a blow hard desperately looking for something to write about.

I understand wanting to go for the brass ring, but Groce wasn't exactly making chump change at O.U.
I also understand that he jumped when his stock was probably at a high point.

I really thought he had a chance to build something special here, with a fan base that would support him.

Hopefully Saul will.

The grass isn't always greener, sometimes just its painted over to look that way.

In the big scheme of things he was making chump change. For argument's sake let's say we bumped his salary to $650,000 a year (Groce was making $355,000 when he left, Saul signed for $550,000). Groce's contract runs through 2018-19 and will pay him $7,045,000 more than if he had stayed. That doesn't include the bump his assistants received, which if you've ever heard head coaches talk on the subject, is very important to them. Plus if he gets fired tomorrow, as long as he doesn't have some serious skeletons in the closet, he will be able to get a MAC level job tomorrow. This was a no-brainer.

Totally agree this was a no brainer. Assuming he is as smart as I perceive him to be, taking the Illini job sets he and his family up financially for the rest of their lives. I've been hoping he makes it work there, but to a certain degree, it might just be a place that he (and most other coaches) can't win at. My perception is that the expectations are well beyond the reality of what is possible most years.

Like all always tell my boys when these moves happen....someone still has to finish last. Ask Groce and former Purdue Football Coach (Mr. Hazell). Be careful PJ.

It's a no lose prop for these guys though. Coach for 3-5 years, collect huge money and get fired. Bank account and retirement money - check.

EXACTLY!!!! If he would be at the $550K mark (which he wasn't), he's made more money than he'd make in 13 years at OHIO University. Not to mention the other perks that have come with the job.
