I love how everyone equates "big" with "tall." Carter plays bigger than a lot of guys who are taller than him. You don't have to be a 7-foot tree with long arms to be a force in the middle. He's a f-r-e-s-h-m-a-n and he's already light years ahead of some other bigs in the league.

So I guess someone needs to transfer out for us to get a legit BIG for 2017-2018.

Doug Taylor and Jason Carter are both primarily inside players and they both are shooting 50% from 2. Neither of them have Campbell's back to the basket game obviously, but they are both better offensive rebounders than Campbell so they can find other ways to score.

Jason Carter is a freshman, he is playing a lot more than Campbell did as a Freshman. More than Reggie Keely, more than Ivo Baltic, more than Devaughn Washington, and more than Jerome Tillman. He is going to be a good one.

Add in that we have two bigs committed for next year already and I think we are set.

I don't understand why some of you won't even consider the possibility that we already have two "legitimate" bigs coming in next year in Vander Plas and Gareri. These are well thought of recruits who got good offers.

If any scholarships open, we will see what happens regarding who we bring in with it. This staff likes the long term investment in players rather than stop gap measures. But you never know what might happen or how any possible schollie would be handled.

I agree with this. Carter has shown excellent BBIQ for a freshman. He is skilled and will only be tougher to guard as he puts on more muscle.

I'm not ready to give up on Doug just quite yet. Big guys typically seem to develop a little bit slower than guards and wings. Although I thought we would be getting a little more from him based on his play last year, he has had some tough matchups the last few games with Thompson and Johnson. They are two of the best bigs in the MAC. I think Doug has some solid play in him that we are going to see before the season ends.

In terms of KK's defense, raised earlier in this thread, I remember a few games ago -- in his post-game interview -- Saul praised KK for his great defensive effort. I've notice that in some games he seems to block out very well, gets a fair number of rebounds, blocks some shots, and plays a pretty complete game. Then there are other games where he seems much less intense on both ends of the court. In fact, it seems to me -- though I haven't checked all the stat sheets -- that he plays better defense in the games where he is hot on offense.

The Carter/Taylor combination, obviously, will not replace Tony this season.

However, Carter already gives Ohio something Tony did not. And that is the ability to take his man out on the perimeter and then take him off the dribble. Big men are going to have to respect his outside shot, which plays into his willingness and ability to drive to the hoop for a layup and/or foul.

Maybe the title of the thread should be Jason Carter is the Present.

When I started the thread, today was in the future and although I did not know Tony was going to go down, I did think Carter would be a big part of any success moving forward.

And you were right! My comment just highlights his play tonight against NIU-for better or for worse the future is now for young Mr. Carter.

My goodness. Is Leon Williams the last freshman Big that looked this good? Not comparing him to Leon as Leon was an all-inside guy. But this is one heck of a true freshman we've got here.

Mark Montgomery, the NIU coach, called Carter's work today "an unbelievable performance." Believe it, coach, and get ready to see more of it the next three years...

Early on Carter was my favorite new Bobcat in several years. He has an great combination of high basketball IQ and good athleticism. He also seems to be guy who is a perfect fit for Saul's system. I told my wife after seeing him in a few games that I wouldn't be surprised that by his senior year he is an All-American. I haven't been this high on a freshman since maybe Mike Haley or Walter Luckett. This is not to under value any of the many fine players we've had in the interim, but there is just something very special about this young man, IMHO.

I have been very high on Carter from day one. What makes him hard to compare to other players is that he is a hybrid. Whoever compared him to Evan Bradds of Belmont may be on to something, though I think Carter will be tougher inside in the long run simply because he's a little bigger.

I saw Carter get a rebound flat footed yesterday because of positioning.

Take it one game at a time in evaluating his performance. The grind of a conference season is tough for freshmen, but I believe he has the mental strength to regather himself when necessary.

Carter's stats, past 3 games (w/o Campbell)-

EMU- 28min, 14pts/11reb, 4-7(.571), 6-9FT.
Kron- 17min, 6pts/8reb, 3-9(.333), 0-2FT.
NIU- 25min, 15pts/12reb, 6-12(.500), 2-4FT.

I'll take it.

MY STATE. MY TEAM.

Im bullish on both our bigs.

I expect Doug and Jason will most certainly improve season by season. Imagine the state of things in two years when both are upperclassmen and the two recruits are soph.

The future is bright.

Speaking of Leon. Just saw @OhioMBasketball post on twitter that Carter is the first Bobcat to post a double double in his first start since Leon in 2004.

Just caught end of osu-northwestern game and saw freshman big man Micah Potter, who I believe Ohio tried to recruit, get some minutes for osu.

A question (for buckeye fans on BA) that I considered while watching was: who would you rather have on your roster - Potter or Carter?
